The controls just felt stiff, I felt like I was fighting camera angles/controls, the layout of the buttons on the Wii U pad also makes at least the default setting feel idiotic, as err the first button on the left of the 4 main buttons - square or x or y depending on system, duno on this one yet heh puts my weapons away instead of attack, like it would be on EVERY other game. If I attack a monster more than say three times with ANY class it seems as though my guy just moves straight instead of attacking the intended target. It just feels to me like the controls are a level of difficulty more so than the monsters themselves. I admit this is only my second time with a MH, and I barely played the PSP version…so I’m not trying to bash due to admitted ignorance, but it was extremely frustrating as I liked the idea - but disliked the execution. It got so bad that it felt like only the dual blade and the small sword cclass was viable of the like 8 I’ve tried as the rest are so friggin SLOW. I’l lget one attack off and then have to re-center my screen/attack, or my second or third attack will completley whiff.
I saw Mario Galaxy for $20 at Best Buy yesterday actually. I decided to pause for financial reasons (bad time of the month - the middle is worse than the beginning for me) - but I’ll pick it up after I clear a Wii U game. Needing to use the Wii controllers instead of the Wii U pad makes it a little less flexible (+1 for Wii U). It was awesome last night watching GoW install, getting irritated with how long it was taking, and just turning on F-Zero.
On that note, maybe you can help me. I thought Nintendo had a solid ‘Virtual Console’ library…how come I can ONLY find F-Zero when I search the Nintendo store? Do I have to do it thru the ‘Wii’ (I hope not). It would be nice to have a few more ‘quick’ games laying around on the Wii for exactly those kind of moments.
Zombie U I need to play a little more before I set my opinion in stone. It sets the mood PERFECT at first, but I’m unsure how long that mood stays around - its chilly the first time, but once you know what to expect, that chill drops down substantially. Gameplay wise it reminds me of the early Resident Evil - just in terms of being more ‘survivor’ like. The controls were solid. The only real ‘gripes’ I have (two actually)
-Surprise death. Its not so much “Oh shit, the alarm’s going off and I’m about to get mobbed”, its “they are telling me to run away, but blocked me in so I can’t escape”. Like they put this into the game to MAKE me die no matter what. At the beginning of the game in fact - I died immediately because nothing told me how to climb ladder and no button worked (even pressing the right button)…it felt like I was ‘forced’ to die to proceed - and that is NOT cool (I have to get hit during the jump to make it across…say what? - Ninja Gaiden). I don’t mind a spike in difficulty, but I should be equipped - technically to deal with something the first time I see it.
-Loss of supplies. This is not directly a problem unto itself, but for instance - I died trying to get into the supermarket (get dem TWINKIES SON!), because the alarm went off and I had no place to run because of how the fence was bent down (in hindsite I could have flared, but that would only buy me time). That was the previous complaint. So I get rezzed as a black dude (yay!) and now only have 6 bullets - and now I have to get past the part I just died… With less supplies than before…like I understand but in a game that so far is very linear - and that so far has made me feel as though I was forced to die twice already…that’s not cool man, not cool at all.
But taking those two items off the table - its a good game. I don’t like the fight mechanics much, but it helps to instill ‘fear’ since I can’t Babe Ruth those fuckers or constnatly roll-cancel their shit with elite controls. Movement is fine. Zombie speed seems fair. It graphically/stylistically looks like L4D at night…or in England (smart move on their part…I was like - why not go out DURING THE DAY U DUMB IDIOT #BlackFolkInHorrorMovieLogic…but since it’s England, it will be the daytime, and just cloudy as hell). I want to play it more, but its not a game my wife wil lwant to watch/play or I want to play around my son, so my time with it will be minimal.
Scribblenauts has become several leagues of awesome. Despite mai waifu trying to front like she was pissed I bought the Wii U (my birthday is coming up) - and fronting harder that she wouldn’t want to play anything - she was QUICK to say ‘give it here’ when I got stuck on Scribblenauts (She’s a elementary teacher, she should love it). My only complaint on that game - its great to have family around to help - it reminds me of a family board game almost - but they ‘hide’ information from the TV and only show it on the controller. I wish they were just a mirror for this game so observers can help a bit better. But that’s minor. I highly recommend that one for the family game grind.
