The Official Poker Thread

Whoa…i just noticed this now. Randy Lew??? Yikes!

is being good at poker an innate ability? It seems very hard to get good at because you have to spend some money to be good at. I mean sure, I think anyone can learn the averages and such, but as far as reading tells, it seems like you need a sixth sense.

Read play poker like the pro’s.

Probably the cheapest / most basic way to learn how to play and understand why playing that way is best.

Well maybe not the best but guaranteed you’ll become a better player if you read a book and stick to the fundamentals.

cool, i already won that book, well i guess i’ll stick to the strats that helmouth shows in the book for now.

While learning the game, dicipline is the most important part. Learning to fold is key too. When you’re more comfortable then move on to making plays at the right time. Not guaranteeing that you’ll win but I’d be surprised if you lost.

okay guys tell me if I made a wrong decision. I was about 35th/90th place, so there was a handful of 1500’ers left (everyone starts with 1500) and most people go all in at the beginning, so as we were about to get to the real game, I get a MONSTER hand. A,A, and I go all in with it on opening bet. Around 2-3 people called, and I think I lost to a flush, because an Ace dropped and I was pretty sure it was gonna be my win. So, did I make the wrong decision in going all in in the first place? or should I have made a fairly large bet, then try to draw out who has what after the flop?

No, alot of being good at NL at least is recognizing betting patterns and having the fundamental knowledge to exploit the other players weaknesses, it is very much a practiced skill and is about 100x more important than “tells”(sure there are alot of pretty blatant live tells but vs people at all decent they can get you in as much trouble as helping you out)

Hellmuth has absolutely godawful NL fundamentals, if you HAVE to read books read twoplustwo books, I dont think there are many if any good NLHE books but the twoplustwo books are at least ok.

Without having much clue wtf you’re talking about, folding aces preflop in a tournament is a huuuuuge mistake like 99.99999999% of the time, I doubt you have the rare case where its not a huge mistake

Rate my play, specifically on how to maximize my hand when I hit a set, I’m a little iffy on these types of hands, sometimes I bet a little too much and I get no play.

Fold preflop bet flop bet turn bet riv, my std would be 2/3 - 3/4 pot for sizing. Preflop you dont want to get involved with the CL here at all with the stacks, if BB knows what he’s doing he should be pretty aggro throughout the hand so unless you flop huge(which you did) you’ve got to c/f a ton or give up somewhere. once you hit esp on this drawy board I just lead since alot of people will complete autobet flop with a huge range so it looks pretty weak from you plus you can still get away on the turn(I cant emphasize enough how shitty it is to be 2nd in chips with these stacks, you’ve got to fold ALOT to the CL) on one of the godawful cards IF you have reason to. If I check its to c/r. Once the flop gets checked through this is a super easy bet, he prob doesnt have anything but you arent winning much by letting him bluff but still get value from stupid pairs or w/e he has that he doesnt want to fold in a blind war. When he bets 400 I think calling and betting like 800 on the river is best, alot of times he’s doing it because he’s retarded and he wants to see a cheap showdown so he folds to a c/r but will often call a blank riv. Fold pre again just to let you know I wasnt joking.

The entire final table at the 2008 WSOP Main Event beside 1 guy is either from Pokerstars or Full tilit…

lol @ Watching Scott Montgomery’s insane blowup at the WPT, then seeing him at the WSOP FT.

Where do most of you play? I started doing some freeroll’s and playmoney on Full Tilt since I havn’t played in awhile and feel pretty comfortable again (Despite the low amount of good players in those games.)

Im about ready to drop a few hundred into an account and play in some tournaments and what not, but figured if I can occasionally sit down next to some of yall on a particular site I’d rather do that than constantly play with randoms.

Pokerstars? UltimateBet? Full Tilt? I assume they are all about the same, whats the most popular among SRKers?

lol did you see the bax/below/montgomery hand?? Dude is soooo fucking bad lol.
