The Official Poker Thread

One book that is kind of must read if your interested is the theory of poker by david sklansky. Its the only book of its kind on poker. Many other books are debatable. If you are worried about not spending money on them just go to your local library and check out the poker books they have there. Most libraries have a average selection of books on poker.

I wouldn’t use rounders for any poker references. Its one of my favorite movies but theres enough flaws in it. . . not just pokerwise.

what are some flaws? everything i’ve seen from the movie, i have learned =|

Wow, for the first time in a while, I have to agree with krasshole. Rounders was a good movie, but don’t expect to learn anything realistic or usefull about poker other than you basic stuff.

so ummmm when are u guys free to play on party poker? weekends? fridays?

hey i got a question for you guys. we play regular texas hold em, just for fun, but we are still a bit confused about the hands. so heres a couple of questions.

  1. what happens if two people have the same hand but different numbers, so say i have two Aces and two 5’s, and my friend has two Queens and Two 7’s

  2. what happens if two people have a straight, so does 5,6,7,8,9 beat a 2,3,4,5,6?

  3. what happens if someone goes “all in”, does everyone have to show thier cards at that point?

  4. what happens if someone bets an ammount that the next guy cant afford, so Guy 1 is betting 200, but guy 2 only has 50 left?

thanks alot.

ah crap, i dont know how to edit… anyways two more,

  1. when can someone go all in?

  2. ive read some rules on poker, and it says in texas hold’em after dealing cards, the dealer has to “burn” a card. what does this mean?

  1. Two As and two 5s beats two Qs and two 7s.
  2. Yes
  3. Only the people that called the all in beat has to, if there is no side pot or if a side pot can’t be made.
  4. Guy 1 I think make a side pot of 150.
  5. In No Limit, anytime. In Pot Limit, if your chip stack is the same or less than the pot. In Limit, you bet all your chips that is the same or less than the pot.
  6. It means to discard one top card before drawing board cards. They do this to stop cheaters or something.

for #3

If 2 or more people have chips after calling an all in bet, then NOBODY shows their cards. Otherwise, they flip their cards up.

for #4

Guy 1 takes his 150 back if no one else is in the pot

i almost won the UB high hand jackpot, but 20 mins left someone got a royal flush at the .1/.25 table and beat me =(

and actually you don’t have to show your cards if you call the all in, only if you go all in yourself.

the flipping cards up is a product of tv

goddamn rob that looks like a heads up pot that has 60+ dollars in it…you playing 5/10 or so? looks at own measly 2k bankroll :frowning:

and rounders is gay.
KGB: I raise!
Matt Damon looking at KK preflop
Matt Damon: kekeke I go all in! i am teh l33t u cannot bluff me! i r0x0r at reading people’s hands!

Why don’t we have a SRK Poker Tournament online? I know Pokerstars allows private tournaments for some FPP. I just started an account there so my FPP aren’t even close, but it would be fun just to have a private tournament. Small buy-in would be nice, 5-10 dollars.

Sounds like a good idea.

I should have enough FPP but I don’t know how to set one up.

it’s 6 handed 10/20 actually

i usually play that or full ring 15/30

was only one table for 15/30 tho with big waiting list and the guy next to me, binbetten, is one of my fav players =)

but i usually don’t play hold 'em, like 7 card stud better, but its hard to get a high limit game unless you’re on party

we could have the tourney on full tilt, i don’t think there’s any restrictions on making the tournament

thanks for the answers guys, i really appreciate it. so what is a side pot, sorry you can tell im a real nood ^-^;

Lets say Guy A has $1,000; Guy B has $,1000; and Guy C has $100:

Guy A bets $200 and both B & C call him. Since Guy C only has $100 they make 2 pots the first contains all their money, $300, and the second, called the sidepot, contains only A & Bs money, $200, which is the excess money that Guy C couldnt call. They can continue to bet into it and only Guys A & B can touch it. So at the end of the hand if Guy C wins the whole thing he doesnt get anything in the sidepot, the winner of that is whoever has the better hand between A & B.

Hope that makes sense.

definitely. we can do that. name the time and date

Sean, check ur Private Message

So when/where is the srk tournament gonna be held. If it is this sunday i can play since im off of work. Rob do you play 10/20 or 20/40 on party? I play that sometimes if your interested in playing with me.
