The OFFICIAL Pokemon thread ver 2.5

so what kind of stuff can you do in that game anyway? do you just gawk at your pokemon running around and take pictures?

ok omw. hope you don’t mind a larvitar with DD xD

edit: thanks a lot

no problem.

Watching the little Pokemanz interacting with the Mii’s it pretty fun.
Wanted Pokemon give me something to do.
And taking pictures is pretty neat.
Then you can terrorize the Pokemanz with Earthquakes. xD

Guru, you up for it? Really, the only reason I mentioned it(besides me not caring for shinys) is that I don’t have any EV erasing berries. I want to use Darkrai for battle…but he has the wrong nature to make him good. Thats the one thing about pokemon that can mess you up…nature…

Cool thanks Snugs and Guru for the link to shoddybattle, something to kill time now that school is out.

Lothar, Shoddy is fun, I’ve tried soooo many fucked up teams on shoddy it’s hilarious, and two of them where turned into a team on my actual cart.

Well the event Darkrai I received in a trade is Impish (not a good nature IMO). If you want an untouched non-event Darkrai, I could get you one with a decent nature (like a speed boosting nature). If you wanted another pokemon, I have a bunch of EV trained ones I don’t use any more Pokemon like Breloom, Feraligatr, Ambipom, Mamoswine, etc. Plus, I have a Timid, untouched Mewtwo.

A few questions… are there any offline tournaments (I don’t count Journey Across America) for Pokemon, and if not, will there be any in the near future? I’m asking this, because I used to be really competitive in Pokemon (RBY), and one major aspect that I really would’ve liked to happen, but didn’t, was actually facing my opponent, and actually knowing them… I was hoping that with DP out with online, that it might get popular enough to happen.

There is going to be a big USA vs. Japan tournament sometime, it’s going to be in person, but it’s going to be on PBR or something.

http://showdown.pokemon.com/ is the Showdown site. You sign up, take a test, and if you get lucky, your number will be pulled and you will get an email saying you qualified. Better hurry, though, because qualification emails go out [edit: Thursday].

There are 2 national tourneys, one in LA and one in NYC. The winners of each one will go to Orlando to fight the Japanese champions on Disney property. Details are on the site.

The fights are as follows:
2v2, Species Clause, Item Clause

No Event legendaries
No Pokmon over level 50 (!!!)
No Soul Dew

That’s it. It’s mostly an Ubers ban plus Heatran, Regigigas, Dragonite, and Tyranitar. Smeargle is allowed to use any move from Bulbasaur to Darkrai.

So, where allowed to do that, Fast Exploder, Smeargle, and Jynx infinite sweep, right?
That seems like fun. =)

I’m not sure about the DP rules (I’ve been out of the competitive scene for a while), but those rules look BS… level 50 limit? 2v2, only 4 for a party? Tyranitar and Dragonite banned? Did they get that broke from GSC and RSE?

Wow…

Are there any “legit” tournaments something like what a standard fighting game tournament looks like? Those rules look bad (although it could be due to time constraints).

Also, how long does the average high level DP match take?

I’d expect a lot of smeargle with dark void or whatever it is that puts both pokemon to sleep…and of course exploders… lickilicky wouldn’t be bad since it get’s STAB and you can swagger it, and its ability prevents the confusion…

because of the level 50 limit you cannot use them. they evolve to those forms after level 50

I predict 3 types of teams for this tournament.

  1. Explosion teams.
  2. Dark Void Smeargle teams abusing the lack of sleep clause.
  3. Trick Room teams.

You’re allowed to switch members between fights, which makes things easier for the people running the tourney AND for the players (it gives scrubs who bitch about scouting an option to overcome it). Generally, each one of those team types is weak to another of those team types. Since it’s doubles, shit’s gonna be zany.

As far as tournament rules for Pokmon, it depends on who you play with.

Smogon, Gamefaqs, and ShoddyBattle all follow pretty much the same format. They follow Smogon’s Uber list and all fights are level 100/sleep+species+freeze+evasion+OHKO+suicide clauses. Their metagame revolves around their ability to use and respond to the threats provided.

Something Awful, Brazilians, and the other self-contained groups on the internet usually follow different clauses. On SA, our Ubers list is different and we don’t care about evasion or OHKO moves. Just the same way, though, if somebody whipped out a Celebi in the middle of a match, that would be breaking the rules (what are the odds of a LEGIT, combat-capable Celebi in a Wifi match?).

The former group tracks play records. The latter group tracks play reputation. They’re both valid mindsets, and I enjoy both of them.

Nintendo, however, has a fetish for 2v2 in all of their official tournaments. ALL of them. Back in 3rd Gen, this was a nightmare, because Doubles was broken at best and a complete massacre at worst. 4th Gen fixes a lot of problems with 3rd Doubles (1 turn battles, multi-targetting move balance issues, etc) so Nintendo’s continual obsession with it isn’t nearly as painful as it used to be.

Japanese players are obsessed with the “Stadium” format where you see the opponent’s team of 6 and you choose 3 (singles) or 4 (doubles) from your 6 to combat them. Being a Shedinja fan, this is a gigantic pain in my ass.

Generally, tournaments rarely are single-elimination due to the luck factor in Pokmon. Yes, there’s going to be luck involved. No, you can’t get away from it. All you can do is manage the probabilities you have and make informed decisions. Is it worth it to put that Quick Claw on your dude for a 25% chance of going first, when you COULD put an item on the same dude that would work 100% of the time?

Depending on what style and group with which you’re playing, battles can take anywhere from 7-10 minutes average (ShoddyBattle in a fast-paced metagame) to 1-2 hours (DS Wifi with stall-based teams). The animations in the DS version causes battles to last 2 or 3 times as long, but the DS version represents the game engine 100% accurately as well as not showing whether or not your opponent has chosen their move already (which can artificially give you predictions).

I’m just glad that this isn’t another “Anything Goes” tournament like Nintendo normally holds. Every function more or less is an Ubers tournament, despite the fact that they have a very reasonable banlist in the ingame Battle Tower. Level 50 and below is an odd way of handling things, but at least it’s an improvement.

this is why I will never compete in actual tournaments:

I hate 2v2 games

I hate Lv 50 style

I hate only 3-4 pkmn total

Anyone want a battle? I’m still trying to test my new team.

Snugs, if you can wait a bit I wouldn’t mind battling

You saw my Luke team right?

if it’s the new one you’re still testing out, then yeah i have
