[details=Spoiler]if anything got to me in this game, it was the cheap deaths on hard.
one of the cardinal sins this game has is not properly framing threats. enemies jump over walls. they wait for you to get to a spot without any cover and then pop out from the woodworks. they rush down with no regard for self-preservation, with 3-4 people on balconies or turrets giving them cover fire.
there is a moment when you are chasing down the plane where you have to jump on this roof top as it starts to pull away. the game decides that all the guns you picked up to that point needed to be taken away and you are given a silencer. that sucks. so you run to catch this plane, and there are 3 enemies that are on top of this rooftop surrounding you. so you die.
naturally, you’re like… okay, i know that theres some guys up there, so next time you jump on the roof, you’ll be smarter. cept now it spawns you on the roof. with 3 guys surrounding you with automatics and you have your silencer handgun only. with no cover cept the one you are sharing with 2 of the enemies which take cover on the endcaps.
essentially you die over and over. you kill one, the other 2 have a clean shot at you. take cover and get sandwiched by the two near by enemies. you essentially have to wait for them to have a conscience and let you take out one without any resistance. or be pro and get headshots within 5 seconds of spawning in…
when you get to the desert city, there is this section where you take out this sniper and then you are given a single wall of cover. cool i can hold it down, even if it takes me a couple tries. so you die and respawn. take your cover. cept now that snipers rifle is at your feet. and you have dumb enemies rushing you down from 3 sides. okay, but now they start chucking grenades at you. normally, you just throw these back with triangle and you’re kosher. cept you have this sniper rifle at your feet, and to pick up the gun is… triangle. and it has priority over throwing grenades.
so you literally cannot fight there. you can’t go forward, because the rush down is to rough, especially with 2-3 armored enemies on their way. you can only go backwards and fight enemies through a hole in the wall which simply isn’t very fun or uncharted like.
it gets worse later on. when you get to the acid trip demon enemies that just teleport anywhere they want and normal enemies that just appear out of nowhere while you’re fighting other people… its just not fun. i like a challenge, but cheap, non-deserving deaths aren’t things that i can prevent unless i know they are there.
one of the most frustrating situations was in the desert town where there is a turret on a car on top of a building (wtf already). you take out the car by shooting out some pillars and it crashes to the floor. cool. simultaneously a car on the opposite side of a fence drives up in what can almost be considered silently since the pillars falling down mask it so well. but i don’t notice it so i go farming for ammo, since the area is cleared. i go to pick up a gun and a rpg out of no where one shots me and forces me to do the whole thing over again. he’s standing on top of the car over a giant gate that you can’t even see him unless you are standing in the middle row looking up. thats… not cool.
TL:DR - this game doesn’t have the same finesse that the other games had. i enjoy a difficult game, little things like making threats more obvious instead of sneaking up on you with a shot gun because they spawn over a wall behind you because you walked forward. these things don’t make the game challenging, they make it a issue of dying over and over again until you either get lucky or get used to enemies killing you from off screen. the design in the first 2 games focused your threats and that made the wind up to fights more exciting and interesting. now i run into a fight and there’s 2 people surrounding me that take me out in one burst. i complete a platforming section, and half way through it an enemy that doesn’t make any noise kills me from off screen.
its these little moments where the design falters hard. and it was enough to put the dampers on the whole game for me. i’m sure it would be easier on something other than hard, but some reason i don’t think it would be any less cheap.[/details]

The Simpsons Beat-em up, I hope they make some kind of ‘Hard mode’ where you are limited to continues, or a feature that disables inf continues. Don’t designers understand that a game where you have 0 penalty in dying is not fun?
