The Official Japan Thread 2.0 "Nani?"

Hi there folks. I’m going to be headed to Japan on vacation from April 13-28th, with roughly one week of that time (split up, unfortunately, at the beginning and end of the trip) being in Tokyo. I’ve already been told Big Box is the place to go for SFIV, so I may go there and totally suck.
Do people still play GG in Japan? I was big into it a few years back, I’d love to get some matches in.

Also, the usual “I don’t speak much Japanese so please help” etc. I’d love to try to meet up with some SRK folks while I’m over there.

Top players play at the Shinjuku Taito station now.

For GG, go to Mikado, which is in Takadanobaba, right near big box. They have like, 9 GG setups? Something stupid like that.

Curious. What’s the survey for? Did you get sorted out with the dermatologist?

It was for a Japanese friend of mine. Doesn’t matter now, she’s got enough answers. And yeah, I can’t thank you enough for finding that dermatologist for me, I did get everything I needed

Hey anyone in Tokyo up for SSFIV KO meals? http://www.capcom.co.jp/sf4/tieup.html
If anyone is free on April23, I’ll make reservation @ Benitora Gyoza Bo in Sunshine City in Ikebukuro.
if interested reply or PM me.

Any SC4 or DOA players? on May3, there’s an all night event @ Loft Asagaya organized by TGN.

For SSFIV tournament, I gonna try to reserve May8,9,15, or 16. I’ll do my best to get 8 or 15. If anyone can bring extra TV, system and sticks, we can run things smooth.

Do you mean food + SSFIV? If so, fuck yeah.

I can’t believe there is beer at KFC… I don’t think I will want to leave…

Dumb question, but what is the policy on drinking in public, will I get my ass beat or is there brown paper bag tolerance?

Timewise, which day is better? Saturday or Sunday? But the 8th or 15th look great!

You are not suppose to, but people do it anyway… No one is going make that extra effort to stop you. And if they do… that’s just bad luck.

I’m moving to Kanagawa. I don’t need money, but I want pocket change. What would you do in Japan if you wanted to earn, say, 5000 yen on a weekend?

(and I mean nothing criminal- or pachinko-related)

Easiest/most mainstream option would be English teaching. You can sign up on a database site (I think findateacher.net?) and let students find you. The going rate is usually 2500-3000 an hour, so just two classes and you’re set. There are also companies that match teachers with students, and you can set up stuff privately through a SNS like mixi or whatever. Half the time you get girls who are looking for the foreign hook-up - this is cool, not to hook up with them (optional of course), but because usually you can just have a conversation with them for an hour without a concrete “lesson”, and then collect your 2500-3000 at the end.

yea SDC, this is true. Just make sure you go to the Taito Station at the south east exit since there are 2 in Shinjuku (the other one being by the east exit next to Shinjuku Sportsland).

For GG, plenty of comp at Mikado which does infact now have 9 GGAC cabs (and they even have a reload cab lol). I always play there so if you wanna meet up for games ill be down.

Also, Rob good times chillin in Osaka. Ill see you next time you visit Tokyo

or you can collect garbage for nearly 10,000 yen a day LOL

where can i get a TE stick in osaka for a reasonable price? by where i mean online as well.

Ah. Sorry for the late response.

You already did man. SRK we da best!

Imma be going to japan in september/october for 2 weeks. i dont speak japanese, well i can as where the toilet is and simple things like that lol. How hard is it going to be for me to get around? would i need to buy some kind of train/subway pass or something? Any infor would help. thanks

Gouki - You should be good. For 2 weeks, you can buy a JR Railway pass, but it is pricey (I believe it was $300 or $400 for the 2 weeker). It gives you access to the bullet train, and essentially is a traveler’s dream pass. As long as you have an ear for “Japanese English” you should be good

Quick question to people living in Tokyo

I’ve been here since Sept and things have been good so far. Financially, not so well. I am receiving a scholarship, but that pays for my rent. As far as groceries, and just plain living, I am kind of feeling pressured. I do the English Tutor thing a couple times a week, and it really helps, but I was wondering if anyone knows any places that are hiring (for a student’s kind of schedule, meaning nights and weekends). I look on craigslist and gaijinpot, and they mostly have career choices, or more English tutor jobs. I mean, even jobs like working at a Conbini… I wouldn’t mind. My Japanese is decent - I completed 4 years.

Hmmmmmmmmm

Japan is too expensive. Too much money to have fun here.

Any words of advice? Thanks

you can always go to any conbini and look at the vacancy section… you can read japanese, right? i dont think you should have any problems to get a part time job in tokyo…

edit: oh and maybe you can ask some of your friends to “introduce” you to their jobs… at least thats how most of my friends started out…

Doh…

My bad… I’ve had this done for a minute but I didn’t post them for SRK!

Gouki: Depends where you’re going in Japan; the primary mode of transportation might be car if you’re far enough from the city. If you’re going to a city it would only be worth it to buy a multi-use pass if you plan to use the trains heavily.

???: If you’re still a student, I think just graduating from college would open a lot of doors. That and passing at least level 2 of the Japanese proficiency exam. No immediately usable advice, sorry!

EDIT: Oh, I remember when I was studying abroad, one person with my group got a part-time job at Gaspanic the bar, maybe the one in Roppongi. Not that he liked it, mind you…
