well i mistakenly bought 18 gauge… guess i shoulda gotten 22 but will there be any kind of negatives for using 18 over 22?
there isnt really any difference between the two when it comes to this application. i ran out of 22 awg and didnt feel like hunting around for it so i used 20 awg for part of my project and it worked out fine. so i am pretty sure the 18 awg will be ok too. if you’re using the red quick disconnects, it should be ok too since the red ones work for 18-22 guage wires. good luck blueoakleyz
thanks
i went back to radio shack and got 22 guage just to be safe (not my first joystick hack but i dont think i’ve used thicker than that before)and i got some blue quick disconnects (.187") for my ground since i’m inserting two wires into each disconnect and soldering them. I also have those red .187". it sucked cuz they only sold them paired with male connects… sheesh who needs males.
I know exactly what you mean… Before I started buying them in bulk I had to resort to the radio shack method. I have like 150 males from all the packages I bought…
I do the same with using the blue (12-16 awg) qd’s for the ground. More room in there for the daisy chains.
IS there someplace i can buy Female ends in bulk? I have a bunch of male ones jsut laying about that are useless to me.
Couple of places:

Peale sells them for $6 a bag of 100 shipped. Going to be my new source.
Thanks all for all the usefull info on this thread.
I just received two Pelican Real Arcade Universal Sticks and oh boy the buttons feel weird.
I’m gonna order Happ parts I have my bud help mod these sticks into better sticks
at home depot they sell bulk (100 for $6 i think) female disconnects that are like size .250" which are perfect for happs stuff/american style stuff… but since i am using sanwa stuff on my next stick i had to go with .187" which are technically too big but they fit just right
You’re going to thank yourself for getting those happ parts for you stick.
Welcome back, Rotendo. Don’t know if you’ve been back long.
ok i have a question. Lets say i have an xbox controller. I have test for continuity and have found that the buts have 3 diff grounds 4 for the black button(cause i get continuity in both grounds that i have tested) do i wire to both grounds or just one same for the the dpad buttons. the controller im using is a cheapass radioshack knock off gamehawk i believe. it is basic controller it has four hot lead but only 2 give off the contuity signal when i touch ground. so do i wire to the ground dat starts the copper pathway or to all. any help or advice would be appreciated. thnx fellas
Alright, dumb questions here but here goes. Recently agreed to buy a Naomi system from a local arcade which has MVC2 on it. It’s got all the power cords and monitor hookups but what it doesn’t have is any of the wiring to and from the sticks and buttons. After reading through here and various other places online, I’m guessing Happ is the way to go, which is what I understand most good arcade machines run. So here are my questions…
What am I going to need to budget for this money wise? I figure the two sticks, wiring, the first and second player start buttons, all of the punch/kick buttons and the wiring to and from all buttons.
How about sources? Any place in particular?
I’m not an electronic genius so if you could be patient when I ask followup questions, that’d be cool.
Is Happ the way to go?
The Naomi system will be pulled out of the cabinet by their techinican, is there anything else I should be asking for? I already asked them to leave the wiring for the buttons and sticks but they said they wouldn’t or the price would double.
Is there anything else I need to know?
I’m building a cabinet for it and it’s going to be rather big, instead of having the two players right next to each other, we’re going to angle the buttons and sticks on the edges of the stand so each player has more room. Good/bad idea?
I’m starting on this on Friday so I’m going to post pictures on a linked website when I get it up and running for you guys to offer your advice.
I appreciate any help that can be offered as well as suggestions.
Thanks
- Lots of $$ depending on what you’re planning on doing. A supergun would be cheaper than a home built cabinet, reusing an old cabinet would be cheaper than building or buying a new one. There’s not enough information in your post to answer that.
- Happs, Happs, and yes.
- Try to sure he you get the jamma I/O board in the deal, otherwise your looking at 150$ or so to get one. If its coming out of a standard cabinet, it should have one. http://www.estarburst.com/ebay/marvelvscapcom2/m1.jpg Its the silver thing with the ‘Caution’ sticker on the left. Some may look different, but that edge connector is the important part. Everything you see in that picture is the minimum you should be getting. If you want to try to weasel in more stuff for fun and profit, ask him for the GD-ROM (disk drive) unit and matching DIMM board, whine saying its supposed to be part of the package. If you pull that off, you would save a good couple of hundred dollars, but the stuff you see in the picture is all you can reasonably expect.
- Yes.
- Depends on the monitor, glare, the angles involved. No one can tell you what you’ll like or not.
Building an actual arcade cabinet is less useful if you’re just looking to play the game. It probably wouldn’t be long before the novelty of having the cabinet would be replaced by painful memories of how much you spent building it. You can buy a premade supergun from somewhere like MAS systems ( http://www.massystems.com/SuperNova.html ) that will already have sticks built with happ parts and you just plug in your PCB to the supergun and then plug the supergun into a TV with a S-video/composite port. Then get a good table and put the TV and sticks on that and go crazy.
There’s books on making an arcade cabinet yourself. If thats the route you really want to go, you might want to get one of those books and take your time building it. You can spend as much money as you want to do this, but its gonna several hundred at least. An RGB monitor is going to be some serious money, MAS sells a 25 inch one for $900.
Thanks. I’ve been back for a minute or two now. It’s great to be back.
Thanks for all the info and advice.
Sounds like the building of the cabinet would be sort of a waste. I think I might just spend the money on the Supernova and throw it in a decent table/entertainment center which I can nab at Ikea for cheap.
I’m going back down there tonight, going to try and weasel more stuff out of them. I want to get some of the stuff that Toodles mentioned but we’ll see.
Thanks again for the responses.
just a quick question. i havent bought the stick yet, but i wanna get the universal pelican real arcade stick and mod it out for use only on xbox (heard that some of them blew out the fuses on ps2 controller ports). will this stick work for SFAC? i know the game has wayyyyyyyy too many issues with convertors. should i just look for the xbox pelican stick?
Yeah. Pretty much just try to find any xbox only aracde stick (cheap) and just use it as a lab rat. Try eb or places like that for something used.
I’m actually going to build an arcade cabinet this year
while at first I was gonna make it a dedicated PC-cabinet and try to mimick an arcade machine to the fullest, the biggest difference to my new plan is that I’m not going to put a bezel around it or glass in front of the TV… I’m just going to stick a nice flatscreen TV in there and I think it’ll still look nice, kinda like how Tekken 5 is but in an old-style (Midway/Mortal Kombat) cabinet. Also, not only will it have a PC but a PS2 for all the fighting games as well as some other goodies… I’m gonna have controllers wired to an IPac (dont know what that is? go to ultimarc.com) as well as PS2 controllers
plz someone who’s anyone answer me i have like 4 diff grounds all along the same pathway of my abxy black white buttons an it has me stumped. so im beggin plz help this young man out
