The Official Custom Arcade Sticks Thread II: A New Era of Builders

Totally off-topic, but that Leon-inspired project is nothing short of incredible. Great choice of artwork, and from the looks of it, flawless soldering/woodworking. Awsome!

Edit: ArcadeCab.com no longer sells control panels.

Does anyone know of any other source for prefabricated 8-button control panels (other than gutting an SFAC stick)?

Are you trying to avoid custom sticks? If not, give finkle a shout. He can do empty boxes.

Is there any way to change a happ p360 with a sanwa style balltop?
Also, how do you guys feel about the Seimitsu LS-32 and LS-32-01? I was thinking about it because it was a cheaper alternative to the Sanwa JLFs but I wanted your opinions first.

I think slickstick sells balltop replacements/sticks for any style Happ stick. Including some really cool light up sticks. Sweetness…

Slickstick ball tops

Concur with the above statement: I am working on my new DC stick (my smallest design ever made) and the height I wanted for me stick was 2 1/2 to 3 inches. I also took into account the bottom of the box taking up 5/8 of those when mounting. I measured the length with a ruler with a competition pb mounted on a 5/8 panel and it was about 2 inches. BARELY enough room, but thanks to the 10 degree slant coming from the 3 inches from the back I was given enough space (1cm). This also depends on what type of wood you are using.

However for my joystick, I’ll have to rout out the bottom a little for the shaft. I even routed underneath the panel to allow even more space for the joystick to move around freely without rubbing the inside of the box.

the solder tutorials are good, but for someonel ike me, its still not enough. i had armadillo solder me some wires onto an xbox pcb, the soldering was so small and neat i just have no idea how to solder like that.

could someone make a video of the tinning process and how to solder onto tiny points for people like me>?

What kind of material are you using for the bottom? I usually use 1/4" hardboard from home depot. It’s thin enough where I don’t have to rout a recess for the joystick shaft. The joystick I’m designing now has a 3" front and 3 5/8" back. (5 degree angle) Also one of the smallest ones I’ve designed.

Ah, 1/4 hardboard… gotta remember that next time I hit up Lowe’s, if they have any. I’m using 100% particle board. Which is why I had to rout the joystick area on the bottom. I can’t say that I haven’t thought about using a board that thin, just always thought it’d be too thin or easily snapped or something wild like that, lol. Thanks.

1/4" hardboard work really great, just don’t set your screws that hold it to the bottom too close to the edges. I set mine in about 1/2" from any edge and haven’t had a snapped corner or anything. It’s VERY stiff. As for the building material I use MDF exclusively because it’s a bit more structurally sound than particle board. I use a shop-vac for all the dust cause it does create a lot.

The Mullah:
Working on something like that now…

thanks nitewalker, every stick i make breaks because i can’t solder. i can’t even solder wires onto sanwa button prongs without it being a huge big gloopy mess.

I posted this in the other custom arcade thread but it’ll be useful here too:
If you’re just making a stick for ps1/ps2 useI recommend the following pads:

The street fighter pad- Can be found for $15 or less now and are probably the easiest pads I’ve ever soldered to. Official too!

The Mad Catz digital ps1/2 pad- Getting harder to find but check the used accessories section at EBgames or gamestop. You can usually find them for about $1.

Sony digital ps1 pads- Because they’re official and to an intermediate ar even someone with good observation skills they’re not too difficult to solder to. Really beefy cords too.

One more thing: get a multimeter or continuity tester to check all your connections before you wire it up to a stick so any connection problems are evident from the start.

Mullah:
When are you planning to do your pad? The tutorial I’m working on will be finished by sunday or monday. Maybe even sat if I can get things flowing smoothly.
Still working on the tutorial… It’s coming along.

Um i have a pelican arcade stick and its the worst crap i have ever seen how can i mod it to be like more stiif for the stick and the buttons like more smoother? and can some add a link to some info plz thnxs^_^

i bought a pcb from ebay, it should arrive on monday! woo, thanks man!

Indeed…

This should help: http://www.shoryuken.com/forums/showthread.php?t=71070

Has anyone ever modded or built a stick with Penny Arcade art?

what happened to QCF sticks?

What’s a QCF stick??
Quarter Circle Forward??

   @ Quarter Circle Forward stick

What are the best web sites for someone to make a stick for you? With my own choice of artwork and specifications that deliver to the UK?

Quartercircleforward are down and I dont think are making anymore sticks, any suggestions?

This is mainly a “how to build your own”

A little searching is all you need to find dreaded, byrdo, finkle, and other makers.

Don’t be so lazy and search.
