This is how Catch-22 used to mount his stuff. You can probably find a link to his old site (or a mirror of it) somewhere in these forums. Can’t vouch for the sturdiness, but I’ve certainly considered it myself.
I’ve used a wood spade before.
I’ve used a knife before, and just cracked it off.
I tried using a Dremel and going slow.
The absolute best cutting tool for sheet plastic of any kind IMO is a router with a bit made for cutting plastics. I got just such a bit a few weeks ago because I was reframing a picture for my wife. I use a Bosch 1617 router with Bosch’s edge guide, and it took me about 20 seconds to cut a line through 1/16" acrylic straight as an arrow.
Whoa, thanks for the link.
How much did you pay for the Bosch and the bit?
I bought the 1617EVSPK combo, which includes both a fixed-based mount and a plunge mount.
After some price comparison, I bought the package at www.coastaltool.com for $217.50 delivered (209 base cost, 8.50 shipping, no tax). They threw in the Deluxe Router Guide for free. Even Amazon couldn’t beat that.
Here’s a link – the offer’s still good on the site:
Best tool purchase I’ve ever made.
The bit I bought at Home Depot for 15 bucks or so.
ok but that sounds hella exspenive. with the router etc. would the wood spade work well? what kind of plexy glass should i be using?
The wood spade will work well, if you are using lexan. With acrylic or plexi I get cracks. The other tricky thing is that if you are using Japanese buttons, you’ll have to drill the holes with the wood spade and then come back and open them up a bit more. They may be out there, but I’ve never seen wood spades come in a 30 mm bore size.
I used a wood hole saw on acrylic and it came out fine, though of course you’ll need some post-op sanding if you’re worried about that. There are techniques that improve such cuts, though.
Hey I have a question, what tool do u guys use to sand the plexiglass or acrylic
Alright, so after a few work sessions I’ve got a basic, un-painted,sanded, but recently putty’d box. I’ve gotta cut the holes for the buttons (which haven’t shipped just yet) and stick, but other than that…there aren’t many straight lines:

And this is the uninteresting top:

dang what kinda wood r u using???
it looks rather thin, I should get down with that
It’s plywood.
Yeah, it’s just regular old wood. Lame to cut with my terrible saw, and the lines aren’t very straight but yeah. The bottom was like 1/4 Inch thick, the rest was…uhh.1/2 I think.
Just a quick question. I have a graphic that I’m gonna get printed out for my virtua stick mod, so my question to you guys is where do you get your graphics printed at? I was thinking like kinkos, staples or some other place of the like
well what I did first was print it on my low quality inkjet printer and brought it to staples to be laminated.
then I layered the top panel wood, image, and lexan together to have the holes drilled.
I ended up totally fucking up my image!! haha…
so I didnt wanna spend another $1.40 on lamination, so instead I printed it on photo paper.
the photo paper was thicker than regular paper so it was all good, and it came out much more vibrant as well!!!
I’m worried about not cutting the holes exactly where the button holes are in the lexan and wood. I’m scurred.
Alright, my buttons will be here tomorrow so I’ll have to have the wiring ready and such. I’ve heard the solderless hack is the best, and my question is:
Can I use any PS1 controller?
Well I Finally finished my first stick and heres the pics

Ok, I’m wanting to make a metal control panel, but how would I go about making it so that the screws I mount the stick to the control panel with don’t show above the control panel? I’ll live with it if I must.
Still trying to find metal sheets local.
do u mean something like as in this stick?:
it’s funny coz I was thinking the same thing this morning…
but if you are planning to use lexan, I would assume u put some kinda padding between the sheet metal and the lexan, just enough to fill up the extra space caused by the screw.
however if you werent planning on using lexan and going straight up metal top, that’s a different story. I hope I didnt misunderstand your inquiry tho, otherwise I probably jus typed a bunch of nonsense…
anyway,
I’ve began the planning for my next stick, and will be buying mdf soon to make it better this time. What I wanna kno is, what is the best wood to mount on the top, underneath the lexan??? MDF is rather thick so I doubt I would want to use that
in terms of thinness, I considered sheet metal hence why I previously stated I thought about it this morning. But I am sure there is a standard for wood tops that everybody is using
btw, in my previous stick I used 1/4’’ poplar for the top panel. I dont have any left, so I needa buy more. That’s why I wanna kno if I should buy something else instead of poplar.
edit: I feel like the first part of my post is stating the obvious, if so haha my bad. I’m such a joystick scrub (in terms of building one that is, playing on one is a different story)
The tape on my Mas stick is slowly pealing off. Anyway to fix that?
