It’s powered and the 360 is powered.
I forget to mention that stick only has 6 face buttons assigned to them:
X Y RB
A B LB
I realize with it like that, I can’t force 360 mode unless I 3K is assigned to something, so I’m wiring it to where it would normally be as we speak.
EDIT: So I now made so it’s like this:
X Y RB
A B RT
And I forced 360 mode with 1K+2P+3K before and while plugging in USB, and it now has the green and blue LEDs lit, meaning it’s reading the 360 PCB. Will I always have to force 360 mode so I can use this stick on 360 or should it be able to autodetect no problem?

It should autodetect just fine. I have to ask though, is the Xbox360 on when you plug it in? Because the autodetection only works if the 360 is on and running.
Plug it into a PC and go into the game controller applet of the control panel and look at the controller properties. Double check that all of the directions and buttons work properly.
If the directions and buttons are all ok, and the xbox360 is on when you plug it in and it stays blue+red, please post a few photos of the setup so I can eyeball it to see if anything stands out.
CHIMPSMD TROUBLE…
I am tyring to repair my friends xbox 360 Hori VX-SA arcade stick that was modded with a ChimpSMD by someone else.
On first glance, there was a short in the cable, and power was cutting in and out. I put a fresh cable in, aligned the 4 USB colors correctly, plugged it into my xbox 360, and it froze the machince, repeatedly.
So then I used a standard A-B usb cable, went straight from the ChimpSMD to my pc, and nothing happened. It didn’t beap as usual and nothing popped up as a controller. I unplugged it, held down the three punces, and still I got the same results. I then plugged it into my ps3 as a last resort and again nothing on the stick responds. Nothing I did was able to ge the green LED to come up.
Even though nothing responds directly from the ChimpSMD, I still get the red & blue lights to turn on everytime I plug it into a ps3 or pc.
Is the board possibly broken? What can I check for? I find it hard to believe that BOTH the xbox 360 & ChimpSMD have gone bad…HELP?!

check both boards separately to c if one or both are fried than go from there.
So I should unsolder all wires connecting both boards. ok.

sorry if this has been beaten to death, but according to the faqs, if i wanted to dual mod my hori vx sa with a chimpsmd, all I would have to do is solder new usb lines to the chimpsmd and have the original usb cord connected directly to the chimpsmd?
I thought I would have to solder every single button from the vx sa pcb to the chimpsmd?
please tell me if I am understanding this correctly because, if so then this is a cinch.
you do need to solder all the signals over. remove usb from VX pcb. put new one on Chimp. heres a pic.

note: D- and D+ on usb are switched in this pic.

yeah but do it carefully so not to ruin it for gettin them back together later

Plug it into a PC, and check the game controller’s applet to see if it shows up. Give it a real 30 seconds to show up just in case. If it doesn’t show up, try to update the firmware on it. If you can’t get the firmware updated, take some good quality pics and post them up, or remove the Chimp from the stick entirely and try those two again.
- For handling the USB and power, that’s correct. You still need to connect the signals for each button and direction as well. Four directions+eight play buttons+ three control buttons=15 wires on top of the USB connections you described.
- You do.
I was wondering if there is a way to easily modify the firmware to disable the X/Y or POV hat on startup (basically like holding Start or Select activates) all the time to prevent situations like we have with TTT HD. I realize you are busy, so I would be willing to do this myself and test it out on a number of games and situations before sending it to you for potential distribution in the alternate firmwares zip.
I know it seems silly to want to modify a firmware for one game, but the potential for other games doing this (canceling same directions on the POV and X/Y when pressed simultaneously) is there for the future.
(I reposted this at Toodles’ request last week).

Hello, I’ve been having trouble with my MC Cthulhu, Imp (the older one), and 360 fightpad setup :\
Last Monday I was playing on it on 360, worked great. Took a break for about an hour, plugged it in to another 360 to start playing, and nothing happened. Controller wouldn’t turn on (I’ve got a dedicated home button to select 360 mode). Plugged it into a PS3, nothing happened, plugged it into a PC, nothing happened.
Just recently had time to open it up. It worked when I plugged a USB A/B cord directly into the Cthulhu when in use with a PS3 or PC. I don’t have a 360 to test it on (yet), but whenever I plugged it into something the fightpad LEDs flashed.
Could it be the Imp?
ERRRRR probably not. Just tested my gamecube cable. It works. I must have just messed up my ethernet cable or had it short out.
Is there typically any way to fix an ethernet cable, or do I need a new one? For example, would cutting the end off and crimping another end onto it work? The current end looks fine…
It certainly seems to be the cable itself. I would snip the end and recrimp the cable. Crimping an RJ45 onto some USB cables can be loose, it may have been a loose crimp, whatever. That and it’s an easy as sin fix if it works, takes little time if it doesn’t.

So with dualmodding with chimp and a 360 pcb, all I generally have to do is to solder on each input and the usb cable solder points of the 360 pcb to the corresponding terminals of the chimp right? Just making sure.
I pulled both boards apart. The VX-SA board, all it did is slightly flash the xbox 360 symbol, for a quick second, then nothing. I got no response from the system and a few times it froze up the xbox. The ChimpSMD, with nothing but a standard usb cable plugged into it, did nothing when plugged into my pc. I could not update the firmware and it didn’t respond when I put it in a ps3. I still got the red and blue LED’s to light up, but that was it. they remained lit upon powerup. Could both boards really be dead? How Can I further test them?

sounds like you have more than one input grounded. did you make sure to solder the buttons to the signal spot and not the ground?
http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/3370/hrap3vxpcbedited2.jpg
Buttons need to go where the colors are.
At this point, both the original VX-SA board and the ChimpSMD have no after-market solder on them. I cleaned them off and trying to confirm if either of them work at this point. I cannot get the SMD to respond to anything except for those red & blue LED’s. And for the VX-SA, it’s possible that the 4 usb wires are wired wrong, and that’s why the guide button flashes for a second and then nothing happens, but this is the second pinout I have tried and I can’t see it being the wireing. I just hope both boards aren’t toast for some reason.
guide button flashes for a second then nothing eh?
sounds like a usb problem then
make sure that your D+ is green and your D- is white in your chimp and make sure it goes to the correct input side and your outgoing usb is in the correct side for your SMD
When your Red and Blue LED’s light that means that its set for ChImp mode. When you plugged a usb straight into the chimp, i’m assuming nothing happened there as well? as in it lights up and powers down right away?
Are there any usb errors when it comes to the PC side, like the USB port shuts down or anything?
also don’t worry about making toast, i’ve never had any board toast on me, ever even when wired wrong or doing something silly like shorting power and ground. thank god for separately fused usb ports
When I plug the ChimpSMD to the computer, the red and blue LED’s stay lit the whole time. Nothing bad happens, but nothing responds either. The usb noise doesn’t pop up, there are no new devices in device manager. The computer basically has no idea that I just plugged anything in…but those led’s still stay lit, which means it’s getting power.
