The Official Convention Thread

Aaaand HEWE WE GO!

DAY 1

So far having a great time! A little sad that we did not get the entire building. Last year was the only time that happened. This means that the space for NYCC / NYAF is shared by an unrelated con. In retrospect now it makes sense why if you went to either the NYCC or NYAF sites you would get the same exact listing for panels. That definitely wasn’t the case last year. It all adds up to less anime and manga stuff this time around sadly.

Picked up some books for fellow SRKer Stuart Hayden, the first issue of Key of Z, two variant covers and a litho. Got them signed too.

Then headed over to Archie’s booth. Tizoc Ian wasn’t around today which is too bad since it looks like today will be the least crowded day. Picked up the NYCC exclusive Mega Man #6 cover that has Powered Up Mega Man and headed for the Capcom booth heh heh!

For Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 I got to try out Vergil, Phoenix Wright, Nova and Strider! Lost both of my matches though lol! For SFxT I played with Ryu and Yoshimitsu and later Chun-Li and Poison. Won both my matches and every round! In short I guess I broke even. Ha always been better at SF than Marvel games anyway. The crowd was pretty intense so those were the only matches I got in. The free T-Shirts were all gone but I got the free UMvC3 and SFxT posters!

To my surprise Capcom was selling stuff too this year. Picked up the Kotobikuya Mega Man figure for only 30 and a Street Fighter Alpha Chun-Li beach towel for 15! And like all cons, NO TAX! Ha I even got a cool Capcom tote bag free with my purchase. :sunglasses:

Played some Asura’s Wrath too. I have a PS3 and not a 360 so unfortunately I wound up with a 360 controller. Which is fine but the beginning is a little button prompt / QTE heavy and I was not familiar with the controller. So I got my ass kicked good ROFL! Hopefully I’ll get a chance to try it with a PS3 later.

Stopped by Funimation’s booth and picked up the Trigun Badlands movie on Blu-Ray for 25! Just to point out, Capcom was selling video games at their booth. Unlike Funimation however, they were not selling the PS3 version of Sengoku Basara Samurai Heroes! Looks like since Funimation brings the anime stateside they are strongly pimping SB heh!

I spoke to a Funimation rep and asked when they are bringing out the second season of the Sengoku Basara anime. He said there’s no street date yet but a tentative date is the first week of 2012. Note once again that this a tentative date, but it’s coming next year for certain.

Next I asked him about the Sengoku Basara anime movie, Last Party. He said Funimation hasn’t locked that down yet but they are looking at it.

And finally, I know he is the wrong person to ask and the answer is no but whatevs. I asked if he heard anthing from Capcom about bringing the new Sengoku Basara game, Utage stateside. He said that was a Capcom question. I told him that today I couldn’t find anyone at Capcom that was high enough to ask, even though I arleady know the answer is no… He said to just keep pushing them.

Speaking of pushing Capcom lol a bunch of people protesting for Mega Man Legends 3 to be completed for the 3DS had their own table! I signed their petition and joined their Facebook page to get a free MML button lol! Oh and they had a banner where you could draw something to send a message to Capcom. ROFL I know how to draw Captain N Mega Man really well so I drew that and made him say, “No MML3? That’s Mega Lame! Just like me on Captain N!”

Lastly I got to meet the artist of Skull-Kickers and SRK member Tokoyama2000 in person! Didn’t know he was going to be there so that was a nice surprise!

And that about wraps up my first day. Back tomorrow to wrap up day 2!

Hmm what’s Key of Z? First I’ve heard of it.

Oh hey AW, the main complaint about the game atm is the QTEs, this will most likely be the main turn off for players.

Sano, I know you know the answer will be ‘no’, but that should never stop you from wanting Poledancing Kasuga in your PS3!

Those fellows earn my respect, link me to their Facebook page please!

Glad to see you had a fun time Sano, hope you enjoy this day as well \m/
Oh and if Ono gets on stage, please ‘boo’ him for me please?

You can get Stu stuff but not me Sano? I could spiral DDT Stuington into nothing!

So sad face now. :frowning:

AYO Stu’s paying for it via Paypaling me the dough. My name ends in the letter o and not the letters ta!

Tizoc I never read Key of Z, just got the books for Stu. I heard the pitch for it though. Something about zombies being organized like baseball teams.

If it helps Ono got booed when he mention a certain new SF4 character being added to SFxT, but the boos were more about the character than Ono ha ha!

Oh and these are the MML3 protesting peeps. - http://www.facebook.com/GetMeOffTheMoon

DAY 2

First thing I saw was the Once Upon a Time pilot for ABC. It’s from the writers of Lost and in a nutshell it’s Fairy Tale characters living in the real world. Hmm makes me wonder how it will compare to the show based on the Fables comic. The Lost writers stress that differences will spring from the creative talents on the show and their individual take on things.

One cool thing is that because of the ABC / Disney connection they are allowed to interpret original Disney characters. So Malificent will show up, or at least their interpretation of her.

An anecdote of the Q&A was they wanted to get Lady Gaga to play the Blue Fairy! They asked ABC music to ask her but they are not sure if she ever got the message. So someone else wound up playing Blue Fairy. They joked about wondering how the hell they would ever get Gaga to put on a fake wig and a crazy costume!

Anyway cute show. I’ll be watchin’!

Next I caught a panel with Felicia Day hosted by Chris Chadwick. I’ve like never watched Guild, played Dragon Age or watched Eureka but this was a really funny panel lol!

After that there was a panel that had Stan Lee and a panel on his MTV comic called The Seekers. As usual like Stan always does at panels he didn’t hang around for questions and when he left so did most of the audience ha ha! STAN’S THE MAN!

Attended an Image panel with Kirkman, Liefeld (booo lol), Seeley and Jim Mccan (didn’t know he left Marvel). Brubaker was supposed to show up to pimp his new book but he had to go to the Scream Awards and couldn’t get out of it. He did send a video to promote his own comic. In the video Bru was tied to a chair and being tortured.

Street Fighter x Tekken panel woot woot! This being a fighting game site and all I’m sure Keits beat me too all this info but for the purposes of full disclosure -

Guess I’ll start with stuff not directly related to SFxT. Ono took a picture of everyone who wanted a Darkstalker 4 holding tens in the air so he could show that to his bosses at Capcom. Just like he did at SDCC. Yep Ono’s still trolling.

We got a release date for the DLC update for SSF4AE, dubbed version 2012. December 13. Ono called it an early X-Mas gift because the upgrade is free naturally.

Not directly related to SFxT, but the Harada / Ono ‘spectacle’ for this event will be an indoor Football game. The loser will get his ass kicked, LITERALLY by the winner. Wish I could see this but chances are tomorrow I’ll be waiting to get into the UMvC3 panel when this goes down.

Finally on to SFxT itself. There will be a 4 player mode where each of the four characters on screen can be controlled by 4 players and you’ll be able to do this online too! The crowd was hype about that!

However most of the panel dealt with those Power Stone looking gems that will give new players an edge. Myself and the crowd were not very enthusiastic about that. Especially since most of the panel was about these gems! A little ironic for me though since I was killing time at the con today playing Power Stone on my PSP. :looney: Anywho depending on where you Pre-order, you will get a different set of gems as a bonus. Yawn…

There will be a limited edition of SFxT which will include a SFxT Udon comic so hyped about that!

We got the official release date too. 3/6/12! One day after my Birthday!

A PC version of SFxT was also announced but no release date was given.

For new characters they announced Rufus who we kind of knew about already and three teaser images of new characters. I could not tell who the three teases were but I can ID few Tekken characters anyway.

When that panel ended I was locked out of every other panel thanks to the crowds. They were screening the very first 2 episodes of the 1985 Dirty Pair anime so I got to check those out for the first. Lol old school anime FTW!

That’s it for Day 2. Day 3 wrap up coming in 24!

$1 comics is like God telling me to waste all my money. I got Joe Mads entire X-Men run and Todd McF’s Spider-Man. Picked up holy terror…wow. I think Frank, as much as I love him, may have permanently ruined his legacy with this book. Also FINALLY got Lost Girls, And the SF Alpha manga. spent most of the day talking to exhibitor buddies in artist alley

Hey I said I’d wire money when I asked last time, no one answered me so thought no one would do it.

Sorry if I missed that. Next year send me a PM. Just with NYCC though. Can’t help you with SDCC or any other cons.

Got home really late last night and there’s just way too much to talk about so didn’t do an update. I think I do the same exact thing every Saturday of the con ROFL! I’ll catch up with the next few posts.

DAY 3 PART 1

The third day was so massive I have to split it up into 2 posts. That joint was CRAZY!

First I hit up the Avengers panel. First Marvel panel YAY!

After Fear Itself #7 drops this week there will be a few follow up books. Fear Itself 7.1 will be written by Brubaker and will deal with Bucky’s death.

There will aslo be a Fear Itself 7.2 and a 7.3… Like really Marvel? :looney:

Fraction will write a new Defenders book. Same members as before with Namor, Doctor Strange and Silver Surfer. Red She-Hulk is a member but it seems like Hulk will be in the first story at least. Other new members are Ant Man and Iron Fist. Dodson is drawing and the pencils are amazing!

After Ellis finishes his Secret Avengers run Remender of Uncanny X-Force and Venom will be the new permanent writer!

The Thunderbolts will have a story where they fight the original Thunderbolts in the past. TIME TRAVERUUU! :cybot:

Some new roster additions. Storm will join the Avengers HOORAY! X-23 will join Avengers Academy. Um, okay…

The biggest announcement was that after the fall out of Fear Itself there is going to be a new god of Thunder called Tanaris! DUN DUN DUUUUN! :wow:

Some 13 year old kid googled Tanaras while he was at the show and found out he was a real Celtic god! Marvel loved this kid and let him read a copy of Fear Itself 7 before it hits stores this week! They gave him a death bag FF issue where Human Torch buys it. Inside the death bag the comic was signed by everybody. Nice!

A few others got to read Fear Itself 7 and Fearless 1. They gave us non spoiler-ish and positive reviews and had to swear to Brevoort not to spoil everything on the net!

Attended a panel about Red Tails. It’s an upcoming film about Tuskegee Airmen, African American fighter pilots during World War 2. George Lucas’ Industrial Light and Magic is behind it. There was an actual Tuskegee pilot there named Roscoe Brown who got a standing ovation naturally! REAL Super Hero in the house! :clapdos:

The big surprise since this wasn’t announced but the writer showed up on 24 notice. And guess who wrote Red Tails? Aaron McGruder THE CREATOR OF BOONDOCKS! Word New York got that THUGGIN’ LOVE! :lovin:

After the panel I shook McGruder’s hand and thanked him for coming out to New York. I told him I loved Boondocks and wanted to know when the next season would start and if there was even going to be another season. He laughed and said, “I have to say no comment to that!” Ah well gave it a shot. Definitely a highlight for me at the show!

Also during the panel there was a gift right under my chair! I won a free pass to ride in a P-51 Mustang Simulator! There were only 25 winners in the crowd. I have to go online to figure out when and where I could go but whatever. IT’S FREE! Gonna be flyin’ in a small plane like Dante at the end of Devil May Cry 1! I would make a Falcon of Power Stone fame reference here but I’m still sick and tired of those @#%* gems after the SFxT panel.

There was a New-Gen panel that Mark Hamill showed up because he is backing the comic. When the Q&A started no one gave a crap about the comic and every question except for the last one was unrelated to anything about New-Gen and went straight to Mark Hamill. LOL maybe this is why Stan Lee leaves panels he attends. Anyway he did do the Joker voice for us. :sunglasses:

I’ll finish up the rest of day 3 in the following post.

DAY 3 PART 2

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 panel!

First they talked about spectator mode which the crowd was hyped about. We saw the Nova and Phoenix Wright reveal trailers. The crowd roared louder for Phoenix Wright! Nitsuma said that PW was included because of fan demand. He also said that he’s obviously not a K1 fighter lol so they worked hard with the Phoenix Wright development team to come up with a move list for him. Nitsuma was happy that the crowd liked Phoenix so he said he was going to tell that to the producer. Someone yelled “GIVE US MILES EDGEWORTH 2!” Nitsuma also said he would say that to the producer.

I’m sure you all know by now that they’ve been doing alternate costume color breakdowns for the characters online but the cool thing was they did it right in front of us! Chris Baker started off with Spider-Man because he said what better character to show off to New York? GO SPIDEY GO! New to Spider-Man were his Big Time suit got altered so it with be black and red instead of black and green. He also has his second Spider-Armor outfit that he got during Slott’s current run! Also the FF suit that we’ve been seeing for a while.

Seth did Felicia. Mainly alternate colors. Seth was jealous that Chris did Spider-Man lol!

They showed us two backgrounds and explained some of the easter eggs. Chris said that for the New York stage there was lots of empty spaces they could fill so they jammed lots of Marvel stuff. Lots of things from Spider-Man comics like a sign for Aunt May’s F.E.A.S.T. organization, Peter Parker’s hangout spot the Coffee Bean, of course the Daily Bugle and even the Oscorp logo. We also saw the random Spider-Man comic where the Intenet-Bubble came from.

There’s an alternate for the Metro City stage that’s made to look like Days of Future Past! Final Fight’s Two P is replaced with a thug that showed up in the Days of Future Past Storyline. There are two giant Sentinels and they are the same as the DLC Sentinel skin you can get with the pre-order bonus. They also have that famous image of all the head shots of characters who are missing or deceased up against a wall. But instead of having solely X characters the images are replaced with Marvel and Capcom MvC2 characters that are not returning!

On Mega Man’s head shot it does not say if he is missing or deceased, it is left blank. A fan asked Nitsuma if he was trolling us. He said yes. Then he tried to explain and said it wasn’t done intentionally and there was one space that had no words and that’s where Mega Man just ended up. The crowd yelled “BULLSHIT!”

We saw a longer trailer of the new intro. Ryu is fighting Nova instead of Wolverine and Vergil is the one fighting Wolverine now. Phoenix Wright is fighting Deadpool. The rest of the intro footage is the same but this time we saw Galactus towards the end.

Then they announced Heroes and Heralds mode. There will be 100 cards of characters that are not in the game and if you equip them you will get special abilities. One card I remember seeing was of Mega Man X. Chris Baker said there is a Howard the Duck card too. Interesting to note is that if you pick Herald mode your character will become silver just like the mid bosses in the game who get Silver Surfer-ized. We saw a video for this mode and using the cards Ryu was able to parry Herald Chun-Li’s Lightning Kick blow for blow! :wow:

This will roll out as free DLC after the game drops and you’ll be able to use the cards online too. Ah well it’s better than those SFxT @#%* gems…

Q&A began. People asked about DLC characters a few times and Capcom kept saying there were no current plans for that.

Someone asked if there were going to be new endings in the game. They said some characters will get new endings and specifically Dante will have a new ending! And of course all of the new characters will get new endings.

An African American guy who was cosplaying as Ultimate Nick Fury and looked EXACTLY like him said that at the Marvel video game panel they announced a mode where you can play as Galactus and was wondering why that was not brought up at our panel. Capcom said it just slipped their minds. Seth said “Should’ve known we couldn’t get anything past Nick Fury!” :smokin:

Seth said that Galactus mode is just as stupid as you think it is LOL as in stupid fun and Heroes and Heralds mode will not work during Galactus mode.

A Phoenix Wright fan wanted to know why he doesn’t use the Magatama or Psyche Locks from the second and third games for his attacks. Nitsuma said that was considered but they couldn’t find a way to implement those moves in time.

Marvel Television and Animation panel time HOORAY! With Jeph Loeb (boooo… lol)!

Jeph took us through all of the upcoming Marvel live action shoes. First up was Jessica Jones. Her show will also feature Carol Danvers (AKA future Ms. Marvel) and Luke Cage! There’s also going to be a Cloak and Dagger series set in post Katrina New Orleans. The Hulk show was touched upon. Hulk will be CGI just like the movies and unlike the old TV show they will focus more on Bruce and Betty’s relationship.

We got to see the trailer for the new Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon! Also a brief behind the scenes real. Cameos aplenty! Doctor Doom was shown in one scene! Also Stan Lee is going to be on the show as Midtown High’s Janitor!

A big change from the Ultimate Spider-Man comics is that S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulsen from the Marvel movies will be on the cartoon playing the same role he does in the movies. Only he will be working undercover as the principal of Midtown High! And just like the movies he will be voiced by Carl Gregg, the same actor who plays Phil! Not only that but Carl paid us a surprise visit! :clapdos:

Carl said that he was a long time comics book fan and said that when he was on The New Adventures of Old Christine he kept asking the writers to introduce Sci-Fi elements into the series. He said “They didn’t listen and look what happened to that show!” Obviously he said he was joking and had nothing but love for the cast and crew of that show.

Back to Ultimate Spider-Man, Jeph said that the Man of Action team that works on the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon is going to write a few episodes of Avengers Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. He said now that we have both shows they want to make sure that they both correlate with each other. Hooray a new Marvel Animated Universe! ABOUT TIME MARVEL GAWD… Lol he didn’t confirm if Spider-Man would ever guest star on the Avengers cartoon but it seems likely that this will happen at some point.

Next we got to see the premiere of the first episode of the second season of Avengers Earth’s Mightiest Heroes! Fantastic Four and Doctor Doom in the first ep!

The big shocker at the end of the panel was that since they had Paul Dini on board for Ultimate Spider-Man they asked him if there are any other Marvel properties he wanted to tackle. He said he loved the old Stan Lee / Jack Kirby cosmic stuff and wanted to use a team strong enough to handle those threats. Enter the Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. show. WHAT THE… :wtf:

The cast will be Hulk, Red Hulk (?), Skaar, Abomb (Rick Jones) and She-Hulk (Jennifer). Again, WHAT THE… Oh well gonna put my faith in Dini for now…

In the Cup o’ Joe panel a few bits of news were dropped like Bendis and Bagley doing another Avengers book called Avengers Assemble. This book will focus on characters that will be featured in the upcoming movie but it will still be a 616 comic.

They announced that Sabretooth is coming back! But his return will be written by Jeph Loeb.

Marvel got the rights to make a comic about Dexter. It will be based more on the world of the novels and less like the Showtime TV series.

There was a giant teaser image of a huge fiery Phoenix Bird with Marvel saying it will return in 2012 but that’s all we got. I hope it means Jean Grey is FINALLY coming back. Preferrably not written by Jeph Loeb.

Attended a Resident Evil panel after that. They announced that if you reserve Resident Evil Revelations you will get a free 3DS case. It will have that eye image the cover art has and will glow in the dark so the red eye on it will only appear in the dark! MWAHAHAHA…

A cosplayer dressed as Wesker who did a really good impression of Wesker asked Capcom if he was really dead in the series. Capcom just said with Wesker you never know, but at least he’s in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. The cosplayer, still in character said, “Yes. That was when I defeated Galactus all by myself. Sorry Captain America.” Oh man we were all cracking up!

Ended the day by watching two episodes of the Tiger and Bunny anime. It was about super heroes for hire kind of, and like race car drivers they even sported logos on their outfits! One girl had a Pepsi logo on her outfit lol! Lots of fun!

That wraps it up for Day 3. Day 4 coming up in a few!

was there a release date for season 2 for EMH?

DAY 4

Went to the Archie Comics Mega Man / Sonic Panel. They talked about the next arc for being based on Mega Man 2! Ian Flynn, the writer said that MM2 is everyone’s favorite MM game (mine too) so there’s a lot more pressure on him then when he adapted the first game. He said that one of the complaints he had about the comic was that the fights went too fast. So this time they will be brutal and Mega Man will be put through the ringer oooh…

In some of the preview images I saw Auto so looks like he’ll be showing up earlier than expected!

One fan wondered if Agent Stern is based on Detective Gumshoe from the Phoenix Wright series. Ian said he can’t speak for the artist’s design but initially he said he described Stern as a hard nosed Dick Tracy type of character. Ian said that if he does look like Detective Gumshoe it’s all cool since they try to get in as many cameos and nods to Capcom games as they can get anyway.

Another question was how Ian went about creating personalities for some of the enemy robots. He said thanks to Mega Man Powered Up he had a lot of material to work with for the six robots along with Oil Man and Time Man. For the rest of the robots he’s digging up any material and info he can find and basing their personalities off of that.

For Sonic it seems that there was a teaser image for an upcoming comic that had a black silhouette. They filled in the darkened image for us and it is Sally fully robotocized! I mean from head to toe she has the robot fingers and everything oooh…

Tizoc I was only able to ask one of your questions during the panel. I asked if there were any plans to include Bean and Bark in the Sonic Universe comic. Ian said no but he always has plans and left it at that.

Attended the final Capcom panel. They showed us Frank West wearing the Proto Man outfit you unlock after you beat Dead Rising 2 Off the Record lol! For Asura’s Wrath they announced upcoming figures for the characters and Brady Games is working on a massive strategy guide / art book for it. We saw the character customization for Dragon’s Dogma and it is ten times deeper than the one used for Monster Hunter, or if you have a PS3 even the one you use to create your PS Home Avatar. There’s so many details you can adjust like cheekbones and how far apart your eyes are. Oh and if you create a girl you can enlarge her breast size! :lovin:

During the panel on of the protesters who wants to Mega Man Legends 3 to come out showed up with a picket sign OH NOOS! The shocking twist was Capcom agreed with him! :wow: They said that it is ultimately up to Capcom of Japan and all they could do is give them the message. Capcom USA encouraged the protest and told them to get on Capcom-Unity, it matters. Wow even Capcom USA wants him off the Moon! Good to know.

I still don’t have a lot of faith that the game will ever come out but hey if it does don’t forget to thank me and my lame Captain N Mega Man drawing! Nah I can’t take all the credit. Just 99.9% of it. LOL I keed keed! Lots of luck to the protesters. :clapdos:

Ended the day watching the Tekken movie Blood Vengeance. In 3D! They even gave us 3D glasses!

Before the movie started they showed us a funny video that featured Ono. Ono is in his office wearing a suit and there’s Street Fighter toys everywhere. He’s playing SSF4 on the 3DS. He gets a phone and it’s Harada. Harada says that he is making Tekken for the 3DS and it will run at 60 FPS! It will also come bundled with the Tekken Blood Vengeance movie! Ono laughs his head off like Harada is joking and then Harada crashes through the window and headbutts Ono! Harada stands there wearing a black gi looking like he is ready to fight. Ono starts to undress and he is wearing a red gi, but he falls down after he trips over his pants. Harada leaves the Capcom building and the audience is reminded that the Tekken 3DS game is in no way related to Street Fighter.

Anyway the Tekken movie is loaded with a bunch of anime cliches and bits of comedy with lots of homo erotic stuff particularly female on female and male on male stuff LOL! Still the fight scenes are AMAZING so definitely worth checking out!

I guess that’s it. Overall I had an amazing time and even though we had less space this year the con was organized a lot better and every panel I attended was great. The highlight for me was meeting Aaron McGruder since that was a total surprise!

Capcom said they are coming back next year and the date for the con next year is 10/11/12 - 10/14/12. In two instances, even once from the president behind NYCC I heard there was a possibility they may extend the con to FIVE DAYS! I hope so!

Thanks for reading! Pictures coming in a few days but first I REALLY need to catch up on sleep…

There may have been but I don’t remember if Jeph Loeb gave a date. I vaguely remember him saying that it’s coming soon.

It’s okay I’m just being dramatic, but yes I will send you some money to get me swag since I love convention exclusive stuff and you are awesome as well.

Here’s my pictures from New York Comic Con 2011!
