The Official Collected Editions Thread (New & Improved!)

Thanks, I might check it out once I’ve finished all the other shit I have to read (mainly books, not comics). I’m a sucker for a good Bat-book.

Question, though: is it the “Imma take it to the streets with some batarangs and a lock pick” Batman, or is it the “I have the entire R&D division of the U.S. DoD miniaturized in my belt” Batman?

The first tale is very much “bruce wayne: detective” batman - I think the only item he uses from his belt is some salve to close a knife wound. As I wrote, there is very little actual combat action and when it does occur it is of the hand-to-hand variety (I assume from your Superman rant you are amenable to this type of story). The second tale is more gadget-oriented batman, where he doesn’t go quite as far as building the robotic suit to fight superman from DKR but pretty close.

also if zephy doesnt comment on my essay i will cry

Is the madman tpb’s published by dark horse good quality?

I read Messiah Complex. It felt very padded. The art was great but the story was pretty meh. I especially thought that the “we have to kill cable because the o.n.e. sentinels attacked the mansion!” was completely contrived and not believable. Also they really neutered Mr. Sinister. Did Layla die? I thought they should have focused more on the future stuff.

Just read the entire Y the last man series today cause its my day off And what an amazing series!!! The ending was perfect IMO and the flow of the story was top tier.
This would have to be my second fav series by Brian K vaughn (runaways is still on the top of my list tho).

Starting on 100 bullets, I got vol 1-8. Lono is a beast in this, but my fav person would have to be wylie. after the shit he had to do in new orleans hes got my respect.

Just picked up Good-Bye by Yoshihiro Tatsumi. I generally avoid manga for the most part, but I had heard good things about Tatsumi in the past.

I gotta say I’m really loving the book, its very dark, and the stories are short and to the point. If you dislike manga like I do/did, give Tatsumi a shot, cause he represents the best of what the genre has to offer imo.

Well I finished reading Batman and Son. I really enjoyed the book. I really like the ending of the story. Now i understand why many like Grant Morrison.

Also i finished reading the Silent TPB I actually enjoyed the 6 POVs of the characters involved in the story. But imo I think this is about the time BB was replaced by the skrulls. I am very interested in getting the Secret Invasion tie in of the inhumans. (edit)

Oh, please. You exaggerate. Anyone hard enough to say “it’s only Watchmen” doesn’t know how to cry. Sano, will you please slap P.Gabby with a very, very stern warning? I think he’s intentionally baiting me.

If I were a complete Grendel virgin, your essay probably would have inspired me to pop my metaphorical cherry. I am still waiting for Dark Horse to reprint all the TRADES, BABY collecting all of the Comico issues I haven’t read. Unless they’ve already done it and I just haven’t been paying attention.

I only read the first Batman/Grendel crossover, and that was a number of years ago. I don’t own my own copy of it, but I’m gonna get that TPB soon. Your description and analysis jibed with my memory of it.

That must’ve been the longest and most insightful thing I’ve ever seen you post. In fact, it’s kind of scary to see you GUSH about a good comic. Where’s the hateful elitist we’ve all come to know and love?

Dude, Madman kicks ass. I have a couple of the old Dark Horse TPBs, and they are fine. They got some sketches and bonus material in them. Check out the new printings from Image. They’ve got TPBs of the entire series in chronological order, including The Atomics spin-off, and I think they are more complete as well as a better value for your dollar.

Yeah. I just read the last volume of Y last week. That was one hell of an ending, despite the fact that fucking Wizard spoiled a couple of crucial moments. That ending was clutch, though. After I read it, I kept thinking about it for the next few days.

I gotta reread my 100 Bullets. It’s been way too long and I gotta refresh myself. I’m glad that the bald Brians from Cleveland are able to end their stories the way they want to end them. I can only hope that FAAAAAABLES!!!1 one day has a finale as good as Y.

I just read a Tatsumi book a couple days ago, too. It was The Push Man and Other Stories (1969). You’re right about a lot of his stories being dark. I love that stuff, though. There’s a poetry to the art of short comics stories and he’s obviously years ahead of his time. I thought it was very interesting how many of his protagonists (in The Push Man anthology, at least) did not say very much and were almost silent, like they were reacting to the world rather than participating in it despite whatever twisted fetishes they acted out by the end of the tale.

My favorite story was this one about a college intern who struggles to make ends meet. He lives with his mom and she has to work two jobs, so the intern makes a few extra bucks by donating his sperm every week to a sperm bank. One day, he happens to surreptitiously notice the woman who’s been using his sperm. Over the next several days, he daydreams many fantasies about her. The next time he goes to the sperm bank, the doctor tells him that the person who’s been using his sperm still hasn’t been able to conceive and wants to try a different donor. This information totally sets off the intern. He manages to stalk the woman. Next thing you know, he’s sitting in a jail cell looking at a newspaper. The headline reads “College Intern Arrested for Attempted Rape.” The intern is just chilling in the cell, looking really ashamed, and then he says, “How did this happen?”

I thought that was kind of twisted but sort of funny as well. Maybe it’s something you just gotta read. But I definitely appreciate this slice-of-life type stuff more than the Japanese comics that typically get translated.

Ah, you see? Now that’s the hateful P.Gabby that makes me feel safe at night.

I just went and bought all of the new pad x-factor tpb’s starting with the madrox limited series. I was a huge fan of his original x-factor back in the day so i dunno why i never delved into the new stuff.

If I get a decent sized check this week I’ll be picking up some DP trades along with Invincible baby, love that comic and I need me some more.

OH! Also Astonishing Vol.4 and Sinestro Corps War thing Vol.2.

Invincible is awesome but i’m pissed that midtown didnt have vol 1 and didnt notify me of that, read 2-4 and i want more. dark horse lone wolf & cub trades are a joke, they are so small i have trouble enjoying it so i’m considering downloading unless there is a translated alternative.
Madman vol1(image) is nice dunno if i’ll get the other volumes but i really liked it.

I read the first story (the one with Hunter Rose) at the bookstore, and it was pretty good. The art style was a little too rough for my liking, which impeded the flow of the story at times, but it seems like Wagner successfully pulls off what Loeb fails at doing in his Superman/Batman stories: he uses a split narrative to provide a strong sense of comparison and contrast between the characters.

Terry and the Pirates is amazing. its got good old fashioned action, drama, sex appeal and racism. put them all together and youve got a recipe for awesome.
one of my new all time favorite comic strips. right up there with Calvin and Hobbes, Far Side, Bloom County, and Little Nemo.

So should I get the Killing Joke? Alan Moore isn’t even all that fond of it, despite the high praise it gets.

The message he was shooting for seems like it should be weightier than it is, so I can see why he doesn’t take as much pride in it as he does his other work. However, I’d say it’s still well worth owning for Brian Bolland’s superb artwork alone (and the newer edition of The Killing Joke has a bonus story written and drawn by Bolland, which sweetens the deal).

You mean the HC version? I was thinking of just picking up DC Universe: The Stories of Alan Moore, which has The Killing Joke in it, but I just may score the HC version and get TSOAM.

I’m not sure the bonus story is worth the price of both the HC and the older Alan Moore collection, but it’s at least worth a read if you come across it at the bookstore.

I get 25% of all graphic novels in my comic shop so I’m good.

Just finished reading Identity Crisis. Wow just wow. Now that is what I call writing. Man the suspense, drama, the twist man all of it great read this may become a purchase.

Yes the crisis thing is out of hand but I like this one

muhahaha one more to the dark side
