I remember reading some old 1970s Era Kamandi stuff as a kid…I remember it being pretty damn good.
finished Ultimate Fantastic Four vol. 2 Hardcover - was underimpressed by the Mike Carrey two-parter…felt like Morrison-lite. Also the annual seemed a little out of place continuity-wise.
Started reading Daredevil vol. 1 hardcover…kevin smith cannot write a comic book.
Some Non DC/marvel universe suggestions for some of the newer readers out there.
Watchmen by Allan Moore. This is usually agreed upon as the best comic series of all-time. Superheroes living in a world on the brink of nuclear war. You can pick up the trade which collects all 12 issues.
Maus: A Survivor’s Tale. I read this back in school. Loved it then, and still love it now. Details the experiences of a survivor from WWII. The story comes in two parts I do believe.
Bone: The one volume edition. Collects the entire Bone series. The story is a little goofy and isn’t really for everyone, but the characters are humorous and enjoyable.
Y the Last Man: There’s 8 volumes of trades so far. The series is ending soon. I think there’s 2 more volumes that will come out.

just ordered a batch of books for my birthday:
Ultimate Spiderman vol. 8 HC
All Star Superman HC
Checkmate vol. 1
Shadowpact vol. 1
Secret Six tpb
Annihilation vol. 1 HC
Crisis on Multiple Earths: The Team Ups vol. 2
Sandman Mystery Theatre vol. 5
Just bought The New Avengers vol 3 TBP, as well as Daredevil Yellow tbp. Already finished DD:yellow, shit was awesome. I recommend it to any DD fan.
Sandman Mystery Theatre is the Truth. I can’t believe it’s taken them this long to get up to volume 5.
yeah they are going slow and some of the volumes have only included one arc when they could be doing 2-3 per book.
Finished Daredevil vol. 1 HC…the kevin smith arc was pretty bad but the David Mack arc was quite good.
I’ve never read any of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series. I’m thinking of picking it up though. I’ve heard it’s on the same tier as Watchmen, dark knight returns, Maus… all of which I enjoyed immensely.
I wouldn’t necessarily say that. The story telling is on the same high level of quality, but it’s almost pure fantasy. It may or may not be for you, though I definitely recommend trying it.
Two more sounds about right. BKV said he’s planning on finishing at 60 issues, and (if I remember right) the current eight volumes collect 1 thru 48.
I picked up Superman All-Star volume one today. This is a damn beautiful book.
This is a must-buy. The Wildcats are my favorite superhero team and Alan Moore’s stories are a big reason why. The artwork gets kind of inconsistent because Charest doesn’t draw all of it, but it really does go to show that a good script is more important than good art.
Just check out Sandman, boxy. It’s a universal classic among the intellectual elite. I’m sure a man with your impeccable tastes will appreciate such an epic work of genius. Sandman doesn’t need to be read in order, so if you want to just check out one TPB at a time, I recommend volume 7, Brief Lives.
By the way, you ever get around to reading Bone?
This weekend I brought the Secret Six trade, so I read the Villians United trade, then the IC special, then the SS trade in one sitting, awesome shit. I’m defintely gonna follow this team…and extra props for Simone bringing them onto BOP for an arc.
Bru’s second Daredevil arc comes out in trade tomorrow!!!
Hey guys, I’ve been meaning to pick up some Hellboy collections but have no idea where to start. Any HB fans out there want to recommend any trades/HCs that you think are necessary reading for the character?
Last collection I bought was the hardcover Runaways: Vol. 2. Gorgeous, incredibly well put together book. Gotta love that oversized printing.
yeah Runaways vol. 3 HC should be dropping in the next few weeks
Hellboy: The Chained Coffin and Other Stories is a really nice one. So is Wake The Devil. If you want to read them in order, the first one is Seed of Destruction. But I think Hellboy is one of those series where it doesn’t kill you if you skip around. You can still get a good sense of Hellboy and his world in the individual TPBs.
Although I haven’t read them, the B.P.R.D. series is pretty well-respected. It’s most likely awesome because Guy Davis draws it.
You will love All Star Superman.
and if you are into Hellboy, and stories of that ilk, you’ll probably enjoy Shadowpact.
if you havent’ been reading the series, they’re both good.
if you have, why are you buying the trades?
have you read Day of Vengeance?
come on taichi, you know I’ve read DoV.
Well, then, that makes things easier…you’re familiar with the characters.
Y the Last Man Volume 9 was released today. Pick it up if you’re a Y fan.
I’m really digging Sandman. I grabbed Volume 1, read it… then I grabbed Volumes 2-11. Thank god graphic novels were 30% off at the comic convention. I’ve been reading em in order and am on volume 6 right now.
I read Bone. It was a fun read. A good change of pace from all the other “serious” graphic novels I’ve been reading lately. I kinda wish it was in color, but oh well.
