The Official Collected Editions Thread (New & Improved!)

Has anyone read the Sentry mini-series back in 2000? I didn’t hear about the Sentry until I read New Avengers back in '05 early '06. Dude is now one of my fav chars. Anyway, to anyone that has read the Sentry series back in 2000, how is it?

The original Sentry TPB is a great buy. Great concept, good story, top tier art, great execution. Totally worth reading and owning. It’s one of Paul Jenkins’ best works, and Jae Lee/Jose Villarubia and the other artists for the various one-shots all do some really fine work.

Basically, whenever you hear people today talking trash about the Sentry and how lame he is… It’s a good bet they’ve never read the Marvel Knights mini.

i havent gotten up to chalie adlard yet…i only got the first book…but that gets me excited to get the second one.

Sounds like a worthy read. I added it to my list. Paul Jenkins is also another writer I enjoy. BTW, just how powerful is “the power of 1 million exploding suns”? As it stands, the Sentry sounds like the most powerful hero in the Marvel world.

With all the Loeb/Sale talk in this thread, I can’t believe no one has mentioned Hulk: Gray. Though, I’ve never read the book myself, usually anything Loeb/Sale does is good. Well, except Batman: Haunted Knight, which is a shame because I was gonna pick that up, too.

I’m also in the mood for some Golden age stuff. I may pick up the DC Showcase: Shazam book. Guess I’m in the mood to read some old-school Captain Marvel. I still haven’t read my Showcase: Superman vol. 1.

I doubt the Golden Guardian of Good literally has the power of one million exploding suns. I think those catchphrases were just tossed in there to pay respect to the Silver Age and Stan Lee’s style of bombastic verbiage.

You know, Hulk: Gray is probably the only Loeb/Sale I didn’t fully read. I checked out the first issue back when it came out, but when it came time for the TRADE, BABY, I always had something else I would choose to buy over it.

I think Jeff Smith’s Shazam and the Monster Society of Evil HC is coming out this month. From my understanding, it’s a modern interpretation of the first Golden Age superhero comic multi-part epic. And it’s Jeff Smith doing it all himself, so I am sure this is going to be good stuff. Gotta get it.

maxx, did you ever check out Tony Moore’s other comics? I think most of his recent stuff is in color (Fear Agent, Exterminators) but I remember Brit (also with Kirkman) was in black and white. New editions of Brit might be in color, though, but it was originally black and white as well.

And you ever find that one story where Deathstroke beats on the JLA? Or was that an imaginary story… IN YOUR MIND.

Stuff I read lately:

Walking Dead v. 7 - Still a great series. The plot just moves at a great pace and you really don’t know what’s going to happen next. The character development is very strong and there’s some more crazy stuff that happens in this volume. You just don’t know when someone will die.

Punisher War Journal v.1: Civil War - Already read the issues when they came out, but I enjoyed them enough to spring for the TPB. Funny story about my purchase, is that I got it at Borders but their price sticker was wrong. It was less than MSRP and I had a coupon, so the book only cost me less than 10 bucks. The only thing that was kind of disappointing is that it collects the black and white variant of issue 1, which is nice, but not really necessary because it just adds to the page count without offering anything new to read. It’s Frank Castle in the mainstream Marvel Universe. Not as intense or as great as Ennis’ work, but it’s entertaining in its own right. You have to love it when Frank shoots an RPG right between Stilt Man’s legs.

Confessions of a Blabbermouth - Another OGN from DC’s Minx imprint. This is by Carey and his 15 year old daughter (it must be cool to have a dad who works in comics) and drawn by the dude who created Serenity Rose. I like this story but the art was at times, too SLG-ish and gothy. But it didn’t detract from an entertaining story about teenage blogging and familial relationships in a single parent household. This is my third Minx book and so far I’ve really enjoyed the ones I have read. And at 10 bucks a pop for like 144 pages of original story, you do get some good bang for the buck.

Wimbledon Green by Seth - This is one of the better alternative press books I have read in a while. It’s about a guy named Wimbledon Green, who is “The Greatest Comic Book Collector In The World.” The story is told over a number of short stories, but they all add up to a larger picture. In his foreword, Seth mentions he was influenced by Dan Clowes and Chris Ware, and I think it shows. This work is pretty nostalgic, and you can tell it’s a love letter to our medium, but at the same time there is a jadedness to it that makes it more ambivalent and layered. If you don’t read many indie comics, this is probably a good one with which to start.

jla wise lets say its in my head til i can find that tradeback…arg…cant find it anywhere.

but tony moore wise…haven’t checked out his other stuff yet. I’m probably gonna pick up the walking dead vol.2 and 3 tomarrow for my road trip to ny for a martial arts tourny this weekend. when i get back imma try and track down moore of his stuff. lol.

exterminators is godly, especially if you live in/are familiar with los angeles

So will I enjoy that series if I hate LA?

A friend just emailed and told me he was gonna send me the rest of “Preacher” for the cost of shipping.

So, I’m getting Volumes 4-9 essentially free.

I still have to buy Volume 3 at retail, because I committed to buy it if my local shop ordered it.

You reading that shit again is making me want to read it again. Trade 7 is my favorite, but I don’t think the same came be said for a lot of people.

Hell, I might start a Preacher discussion thread. God damn, that comic was fucking AWESOME.

finally finished ASM Omnibus

Picked up some totally unexpected trades today:

Spider-Family Back In Black Digest
Runaways Vol. 1 Digest: Pride & Joy
Bizarro Comics

Slightly off topic, I picked up these used DVDS:

Spider-Man: Return of the Green Goblin $7.99
Spider-Man 2 Collectors VD Gift Set $4.99

The Spidey 2 DVD has everything included. :lovin:

I saw vol. one of DC: The New Frontier and I think I feel in love. This was the first time I’d actually seen the book. Was freaking BEAUTIFUL. But The Absolute Edition costs like $75. BUT, all trade paper backs and manga at my comic shop is 25% off. Soooo I can get it for about almost $60.

COUNT DAT FUCKING SAND NIGGAZ.

I want to say other catch phrase-ish things, but I can’t ruin it.

Jesse Custer is a fucking badass, I just need to repeat that.

Do it, but bear in mind, I’m only 1/3 of the way in.

I’m loving every minute of it.

people keep telling me “Read Sandman” or “Such-and-Such is better”, but damn if I haven’t been this excited about a Non-Superhero comic in a while.

I love the pace, the action, and the setting, and like Penn Jillette said in his dedication to volume 3 “It has everything I love, Blashphemy, Guns, cars, babes, tits, and fucking”.

or something like that.

V-Slash: That shit is great, the fucking WORD, yo.

It didn’t work on the L’angelles until God made it work on 'em, and it doesn’t work if they don’t speak the same language.

I wonder if the WORD works on Atheists?

Well I finished Superman: Birthright. One of the best Superman stories I’ve ever read. From start to finish it rocked.

I started Bizarro Comics this evening. Funny stuff. It’s basically an anthology of offbeat comics

I should probably get the Harley and Ivy TPB since Paul Dini, Bruce Timm and co. were the ones who did it.

You are experiencing exactly what I did when I read it.

When you are finished we can have a Preacher book club discussion.

I want to mention stuff, but I can’t just go out and say things because I can’t remember the order seeing how I kinda just read it all through in one go.

Cassidy and Jesse relationship was done perfectly.

I’m enjoying the shit out of it.

I refuse to read anymore spoilers, but hopefully the rest of the series arrives soon, so I can keep reading (I do want the fun to last a bit), and we can discuss what I’ve read.

if Zeph doesn’t start a thread about it, I think I might.

I’m SERIOUSLY glad I waited on this, it was WORTH the wait.

I read most of Superman/Batman: Absolute Power at the bookstore the other day. It was better than Public Enemies, but the dual narration thing was even less effective. Jeph Loeb could use a good kick to the balls.

I do like the penciller better than Ed MicGuinness, though the art was a little inconsistent at times. Sometimes Supes looked like the man originally drawn by Joe Shuster, and sometimes he looked like Solomon Grundy in a leotard.

I wouldn’t buy it, but at least there’s a better concept behind it than “find any excuse to introduce a cavalcade of DC heroes and have them fight.”

i read the first preacher trade and wasnt blown away…havent picked up any of the others since

hoping to get a lot of reading done this weekend. I am a little more than halfway through Captain America Omnibus so should finish that. I just re-read DMZ vol. 2 to prep for vol. 3 and I need to do the same with Checkmate vol. 1 and ION vol. 1

I read the Chuck Dixon Nightmare on Elm Street tpb from wildstorm which was not bad. I wish someone would take something like this and do a more decompressed version that is one big awesome storyline instead of the “Freddy’s nightmares” style done-in-ones.
