I’m pretty damn sure the Back to Karkand expansion pack weapons are just for those maps alone. Also the “Physical Warfare” weapons are unlocked to everybody through level ups but people who per-orderd it get them from the start.

I guess it could be worse, paid DLC to get in game items and/or skins.

Battlefield 3: Back to Karkand is available to anyone who preorders the game. It is a multiplayer expansion based on Battlefield 2 content, including four classic maps, vehicles, weapons to carry on to the base game, and new achievements/ trophies, all at no extra cost. The expansion will include Strike at Karkand, Sharqi Peninsula, Gulf of Oman and Wake Island,[53][54] newly enhanced with Frostbite 2. Amazon purchase will give a code to be downloaded, unless there’s another version they have on their site, which I doubt.
