people only think he’s the best thing since sliced bread because a:he produced a soundtrack for a popular anime

and b:they have never heard anything like it, even though there are better artists in the same genre

So what that he produced some songs on Samurai Champloo? Is it because of that he’s overrated? He’s a good producer and artist–why hate on that?

Also, I’m listening to With Rainy Eyes right now–it’s on the 2nd Hydeout album.

While its true that there are other artists in the same genre, Nujabes’ music is what popularized it. Dont be that guy that says, “Oh, I’ve been listening to this genre for years with these artists. Ya’ll behind and listen to gay anime shit.”

I’ve heard of Mistu and the likes, and they are all on the same level, but you need to get off your high horse and stop hating because Nujabes mainstreamed the “underground” sound when he hit it big with SC. I enjoy his music and even more so that he goes a little beyond modern hip-hop soul.

Not sure if he falls under the category you guys are talking about, but I like Riow Arai. Especially his work with Noriko Tujiko. That girl is most excellente!

lol, nujabes didnt popularize downtempo, maybe in the videogame/anime/nerd scene. that style of music has been around sincce the early 90s, and that’s also why “jazzy hip hop” or whatever is mostly played out, and only a few artists are doing interesting things with the sound.
