The New Yu-Gi-Oh Thread: Construct Joins Stratos in the Halfway House

I’ll say this. My problem with the game isn’t Link Format.

Spoilered for length.

Spoiler

My problems with the game is how forced the meta always is without even the pretense of trying to be fair, and how the game goes out of its way to kill player interaction.

If you want to have even have a chance you play the new top deck Konami forced down your throat by axing the old shit on the BL and power creeping the shit out of it with new sets. Doesn’t matter if its SPYRALS, zoos, D.Rulers, or whatever other brand of AIDS Konami prints.

It’s like if Capcom intentionally released DLC characters that were broken in order to push sales. Always making sure to nerf whoever the last top tier was into the ground while the rest of the cast is left to fend for itself. In fact, iirc this is similar to what NRS did in MKX, and surprise, people fucking hated it. Yet for whatever reason niggas just take that shit in YGO.

Honest to god don’t understand how or why niggas throw bread at this game, knowing they are gonna get dicked in the future. Especially when there are free, online alternatives.

It’s not even that either. That’s the case in pretty much every card game in existence. Other games hide it with Set Rotation, Konami is pretty much forced to be blatant about it. If you can’t take power creep forcing you to play new decks then Yugioh isn’t the issue, that’s the case with every TCG.

I’m still retired until they free my nigga Stratos

Wait, Dueling Book dot com?

When this come out?!

Also:

29/32 is what PePe had before the “Adjusted List” in 2016.

Just saying lol

The only reason that SPYRALs didn’t get the immediate hit as well is because there’s a YCS this weekend as well. If the numbers maintain, SPYRALs will be done before Thanksgiving hits.

@Vhozite The only way to make this game fair is to introduce a resource system. And then it wouldn’t be the broken mess that we know and love about yugioh.

It’s a terrible game with a fun deck building process. Having a bunch of decks and fighting it out with different strats is what the game is about for real. It was never about that unless we mention that random one-off goat format where the top two decks had solid games.

But the strategies aren’t even different. Pretty much every deck now is setup to OTK or make an unbreakable board turn 1. Maybe shit out an unfuckwithable boss to sit on. You could argue those were always the goals of most decks, but because the game is so fast you see very little variance in how these goals are achieved. Of course there are other strategies but they don’t put in the same level of work.

If you are going second you need to open with handtraps just to be allowed to play. That limits creativity in deck building the same way it would if PoG was at 3. This msy not always be true if you’re running the top deck(s) too, but then you are just the same shit as everyone else.

I absolutely do not enjoy the newer decks in the game. Everything searches everything, everything floats, etc. Boss monsters aren’t good unless they don’t let the opponent play or have more protection than the PotUS.

Power creep isn’t even the only problem with the game. In fact, if it’s as prevelant as you say why are Stratos and Construct still on the list despite being nothing compared to what modern decks can do? Why are Sams getting laughably bad new support when Konami’s MO is to print broken shit to push product.

Also, I’m not convinced power creep is as unavoidable as you claim, but I’m no expert.

Stratos and Construct are still on the list because the TCG Banlist is infamous for being very hesitant to bring ANYTHING off the banlist. Shit, Time Seal is still on the banlist and absolutely no one in their right mind would ever play that trash again.

^Which is more or less my point. Even the part of the banlist that has no bearing on sales is trash.

There us a difference between hesitation and blatant neglect.

Except your point does nothing to dispel the fact that it’s all about power creep. In fact, bringing back Stratos and Construct would actually make Konami MORE money as they haven’t been printed in a while and they could easily make some cash just by reprinting those two and letting them loose again.

Also, at no point did I say it was the only problem with the game. I’ve already said I’m pretty much done with it myself, but my issue isn’t with power creep directly because every TCG goes through with it.

No if anything, Yugioh’s Power Creep is only a symptom of something.

So what is your problem with it then?

This will be a quite involved post (as I also needed a bit of time to really gather my thoughts on it) but let me start with this.

Yugioh has always been a game around the interaction of the 3 card types. Monsters, Spells and Traps. While obviously at different points in the game some have been stronger than the others, ultimately the 3 revolve around themselves to create a sort of balance to the game. Monsters as the lynchpins, Spells as the Engine, Traps as the Roadblocks. However, something happened down the line that fucked up the balance majorly. Hand Traps.

Simply put, there’s very little interaction with Hand Traps in the game. Monsters have a ton of interaction. Spells, whether continuous or otherwise have interaction. Traps have a bunch of S/T destruction that they have to live through in order to be effective. But Hand Traps have nothing really to stop them from disrupting play. There’s no downside to having them. Now in of itself they aren’t too offensive, and if they were designed around properly, they could’ve been a boon for the game and initially they were. I enjoyed the effect that cards like Honest and Effect Veiler had on the game as it forced a bit more thought into turn processes.

The issue is, instead of Konami using Hand Traps to slow the game a bit, and then build around the slowed pace, they instead used the Hand Traps as an excuse to speed things up faster, which led to stronger hand traps and more absurd Power Creep than ever before. Let me explain.

We all know about Pepto Bismol. Gotta ease those stomach pains. But the thing is, most people instead of taking the Pepto Bismol after a bad day as a remedy and learning from the experience to ease eating habits, instead use having Pepto Bismol as an excuse to continue eating poorly because “well if it goes bad, more of the remedy”. Yugioh acts similarly. Instead of using those early Hand Traps to curb the power of the game and make something more methodical, they try to speed things up and then make more hand traps over top of the power to try and curb them again, causing an immensely vicious cycle which has led to the situation we’re in now. Decks running 12-15 Hand Traps. Before, decks running that many traps had interaction, had to deal with S/T disruption and removal. There’s no such way to interact with Hand Traps, they either have them or they don’t. Instead of allowing more critical thought in play, the game becomes a coin flip because there’s too much penalty for not attempting to go all out. But because decks can push more and more through single hand traps, Konami makes more and more strong ones to counter act it. Now you have decks running that many Hand Traps just to COMPETE, due to the power that was built in their existence.

And there’s nothing to say this cycle will stop as we’re due for another in the Ghost cycle very soon. By breaking the fundamental balance that they built the entire game around, they morphed it into something that can no longer be stopped. EVERYTHING ELSE about the game I honestly don’t mind all that much. Link Format I think is still a fantastic idea. Some cards may be a bit too strong, but those are growing pains I would expect. But in restriction it actually allows more freedom, and they finally succeeded in doing something they had been trying for years, and that was make the columns and zones relevant. But Konami’s reliance in making hand traps to combat the creep they made, only made them creep things further rather than curb back and it’s caused a runaway train they can no longer stop.

I think pendulums ruined the game, because that in turn caused the clusterfuck of Links

To be fair, people have been saying this for every new summoning mechanic since Synchros.

Teledad was BROKEN!

RETARDED BROKEN!

Disk Commander era was LAWLS

I think Pendulums were a bad idea, but for about a year or so, Konami was surprisingly patient with the mechanic.

i wonder if firewall dragon being the ace monster puts protection on him from being errata’d or limited on a ban list? i hope not , cause that shit needs to happen.

By the way, 27/32 at London.
