I don’t see any advantage to switching, except maybe doing Guile motion ultras more consistently.
Edit: Okay maybe plinking, but I almost never miss my important links with Bison and Guile, which are the main characters I use in tournament. And I’ll admit MvC2 is also pretty hard on pad because of the way dashes and stuff work. But everything else is a tossup, even GG can be played well on pad, some of the best GG players I’ve ever gone up against used a regular Dualshock.
Been playing fighting games since I can remember really…
Competitive was with Vanilla though!
I guess my execution is ok, but I have other demons with FG’s rather than execution, so I can definitely tell you that fighting games is not all about execution!
^ This. People act like playing stick instantly improves execution, reflexes, and mindgames. I do think that using a stick has its advantages, like easing the use of “advanced” characters that have tons of fast button presses/holds (Magneto, Carl in BB, etc.).
I don’t recall anyone here saying pad users suck, or are scrubs. It’s almost always “I use stick, but use a pad if that’s what you are comfortable with”. I’m not really seeing this elitism you speak of.
In Johnny’s case, he HAD to use stick once instead of pad for a tourney, and we encouraged him to give it a shot…
I’m not really seeing this elitism about sticks you are talking about, at least in the Memphis community.
This. Overly defensive much?
Dude…that is sick. You get in any games with tops? Who put you in losers/eliminated you? How many entrants for mk?
Also yeah I am betting FL is nice. Glad to hear you are doing well sir.
Luis - aha! I knew you were better at spanish and lee’s post proves it. You shall talk to me in Spanish and enhance my fluencia.
Just a heads up to anyone who still has a copy of MVC3 and doesn’t play it anymore. Best Buy is giving $30 for trading it in. Not bad considering gamestop gives about $18.
Not overly defensive just calling out stuff that I view as inaccurate. In memphis you are more likely to get into a friendly argument debating square or octo gates. Has anyone posted here on the forum and asked about pad vs stick any time recently? I don’t think so.
Nobody dismisses anyone in Memphis for their control method. Hell Johnny beasts in Marvel on a pad. Kinetik comes to fight nights yes, but I don’t recall someone talking genuine shit to him for using pad. If that did occur, I’d be very surprised, I don’t think any of the regulars does anything but play games and give friendly advice.
Short version, if you aren’t from Memphis, and don’t have a reliable example to base your statements on, then you need to stop talking like you know what actually is going on here.
I took it as the general mindset of the fg community is stick > pad. I’ve been called a “shitty pad player” once or twice.

How… uh… who… wait… what?
You can’t play on a stick, I mean, it’s like… impossible for you correct?
Which is why my original statement said, “in the Memphis community”. If there are genuine issues that occur here, especially at fight nights, I want to know about it. So I can address them.
Which is why I take exception to *generalizations *that are applied to my local scene when there doesn’t seem to be anything backing it up.
I think you misinterpreted, I was saying KinetiK was kinda jumping the gun on defending himself as a pad player, when no one posted anything about that being a bad thing. I don’t really see anyone that posts here being elitist about pad vs stick play.
I made no “generalizations” about Memphis at all.
Gotcha. I understand where you are coming from now. Yeah, that’s why I was kind of whoa now. But in all seriousness, if someone is an ass to you at fight nights or something of that nature, KinetiK, let me know. To my eye everyone seems to have a good time, and as host of the fight nights it’s my prerogative to make sure everyone feels comfortable.
I know you likely don’t know a lot of the regulars that well yet, but you are more than welcome to come to the post-fight hangouts at Huey’s or the Fox (where depends on if you are below 21). We drink beers, talk shop and sometimes we even discuss fighting games.
Just walk up to the main group after we shut it down at Hastings and you will be told where everyone is going for drinks/food/sodas.
What’s the difference between LeBron James and a prostitute? A prostitute doesn’t choke on the big one. ba-doom-tssss
As for the pad vs stick thing anyways… I played pad for about a year or so once I got into fighting games, mainly was playing Blazblue CT when it came out… me and a friend went to KiT since it was there, and had to use PS3 pads, so I sucked cause I was used to playing the 360 pad… After some experimenting with a stick I ended up liking it more, and felt I could react more quickly on it, not because “OH TEH STICK GIEVS ME POWAHH” but because I was just able to do my inputs faster on it. Sanwa buttons do help for that as well. Not to mention I wanted to just get used to playing on a stick, so that I could be used to it when I go to Game Galaxy and want to play something in a cabinet.
But I have nothing but respect for players like Wolfkrone who can beat the shit out of people and do crazy Viper god tier execution shit on a pad. I can barely throw a hadoken on a pad anymore.
It comes down to preference really, and if anyone gives you shit for using a pad, they’re just ignorant.
It was on a forum… people I’ve never seen or met.
I wouldn’t say it would be impossible for me. It would take me twice as long to learn compared to others, but I still don’t think I would have the execution I have on pad.
I started playing fighting games around '98 with Tekken 3, then Dreamcast came out with tons of awesome stuff like Power Stone 2, MvC2, and CvS2. I also got into Guilty Gear X and Soul Calibur. Played strictly on a pad, though I tended to use the analog sticks. I had an old SRK account back then and went to a few tournaments, but I wasn’t too serious about it (my main game at the time was Counterstrike). In 2002, I started my undergrad at a school in Manhattan and went to CTF a few times, but those guys were all so good and I couldn’t adapt to playing on an arcade stick. I was also super busy with school, so I gave up on fighting games. Got sucked into WoW trap after undergrad and played that up until last year. Came back to fighting games for MvC3 and figured I’d play on an arcade stick this time.
I considered myself decent at CvS2 and MvC2 at the time, but it’s been so long and my competition was limited, so I’m essentially a new player. The arcade stick definitely gives me trouble; I suck horribly at DPs, double QCFs, and all left-sided inputs in general. That being said, I don’t think I’m any better on a pad, and my consistency is improving (slowly…).
Pad’s are for women and scrubs

anyways played pad like the first months of Vanilla then made the switch to stick and never looked back I personally cant play on pad anymore not even shit like Tekken feels right on pad my execution is ok at best it just seems to have good days and bad days
really got into fighting games with CvS2 played them ever since but SF4 was the first I played tourneys and shit for
in other news heard Lebron James is coming out with a new phone but it only vibrates because it doesnt have a ring
It takes a while getting used to Tekken exec if your main FG background is SF style no matter what you use. Its totally different from anything capcom related. IIRC even some of the Korean players have said there are pros in Tek for using pad or stick.

I cannot wait for this game… It’s basically a god game where you either help your tribespeople thrive, or make their lives miserable. But the main thing is how amazing the terrain morphing in this game looks. You can create mountains, rivers, volcanos, etc… But everything just flows realistically and looks awesome.
