Simpsons is after all Fox’s meal ticket. If Fox didn’t have Simpsons, then what would they have, THE NEXT, NEXT, JOE MILLIONARE: His dirty secret, he’s a man who was once a woman who is now a man again and he likes midgets. WOOOOO. And a buncha other shows that get off on other people’s misery. (then again, that’s what their network is all about now, Reality shows and The Simpsons)
From what i heard about Family Guy, looked into it abit, aside from getting that insane schedule that Korngo mentioned, the ratings fell. But it was really weird, first Fox Cancels it, then it comes back later on, then Fox cancels it again. Here is a mini explanation.

Family Guy was often controversial, making it hard for Fox to secure advertizers for the show, Fox were therefore keen to see the back of the show. The show also suffered from poor ratings, after the first showing the figures fell (see the episode guide for information on ratings). Also, you can clearly see the real grudge that Matt Groening had with FOX through his work, if you’ve seen a couple of episodes of The Simpsons and Futurama, there is always a rag on FOX somewhere, and it’s not just a subtle “ha ha we are kidding and love you” gag, it’s like a pretty hardcore “you suck sour frog ass” gag when it pops up. I’ll list the episodes they do that in later on (heh heh it’s quite a few)
This is not the first time that Fox screwed a show. Married with Children, had a long stint on Fox, they had a Season Finale, which later turned out to be a Series Finale instead cause Fox told them that they were gonna be on the dreaded “Hiatus”. They never came back after that. Dark Angel by James Cameron, was told that they were renewed for a Season 3, but at the last possible minute, they were told they got cancelled and replaced by “FIREFLY” by Josh Wheldon, the dude that made Buffy the Vampire Slayer. After one season, Firefly was cancelled. Anyways, to sum it up, the people at Fox are complete idiots.
One last little tidbit, after The Simpsons Series Finale after 2 seasons, they say that a movie will be in the works. It’ll be animated of course.
