The NEW Official Xbox® Thread: $399 system without Kinect coming in June

So MS is now the John Kerry of the gaming world?

What with these two next gen consoles essentially treating retail games like installation discs, I really hope that MS/Sony eventually develop some basic housekeeping functions (i.e. simple backups of individual titles, validating corrupted files rather than reinstalling an entire game, etc). I know they still must stave off piracy, but when you gradually forgo the simplicity of what console gaming once represented, at least give those savvy enough the tools to maintain it like they would on PC.

In this sense I have more faith in MS; the features they added the 360 & now the X1 show they’ve generally been more progressive with these more mundane features.

This is why I haven’t bothered to get a next-gen console. There’s no difference from a physical disc and a digital version of the same game anymore. Ownership is completely gone, as it has been on PC for a long time, but at least I don’t have to pay to play online.

I’m going to coast through this gen on my PC+current consoles if the games coming out on the PS4/Xbone stay as underwhelming as they do(that and, 99% of games get PC ports anyway…1st party titles I don’t care for on any platform.)

Hm, I disagree on the ownership aspect. So long as you have a physical copy, you can play it on as many different consoles as you want indefinitely, regardless of whether Sony/MS’ distribution servers are still online or not. Everything just requires a HDD install now.

Forgot to include file compression/archiving as another nicety. With the average sizes of games now you could conservatively fit like 20 titles on the stock HDDs. Telling customers to just delete their old shit or slap on an external as their only means of recourse would be pretty shortsighted. But I’m sure they’ll figure something out.

EDIT: Then again, they could just pump out newer console models with larger HDDs for potential customers, and say “fuck you, we got ours” to pre-existing ones like they did last gen :stuck_out_tongue:

Not when it comes to multiplayer, though! MP is behind a service paywall —> eventually gets shut-down. PC wins here too, unless the game has no dedicated servers options/was purposely made to dick the consumer(Diablo 3 with its always-online and lack of offline play.)

I just feel games are leaning more and more towards being a service that you pay for and I don’t like the direction that consoles are taking. Sure the Wii U avoids all these things but…I don’t want a Wii U. Wii U is looking to be the last “traditional” console, imo, and thankfully handhelds have avoided all this bullshit too.

Yeah, but the risks with online functions for console games have always existed, dating back to Dreamcast. Until they let people host their own servers (ha!), we’ll always be playing on borrowed time.

It’s different, but most are going to just go with the times any ways since some of the biggest games out there are mobile games that already work that way. I don’t even own a disc based game on the system yet and knowing consoles, they’re most likely going to push these consoles for 6 or 7 years even if they hardware for all of the systems is outdated by PC already. They know they can get people to buy systems for the convenience and not everyone cares for super current visual PC tech in their games. People in the end want to play games and the 3 systems that came out for next gen still provide that.

To me it’s not much different than downloading an emulated game as far as the ownership experience. As long as it’s out there on the internet you can get it. Obviously you have to pay for legit console games, but I’ve gotten over having a disc or cartridge of a game. The way cell phones are going it’s just obvious almost nothing we possess will be physical in some years.

May system update was released to the public.

Looks like they’ll be spending the rest of the month focusing on the June update, which will be a much bigger deal.

i think its great to see motion controlling getting phased out, but it sucks that rare got forced into doing these games over and over instead of what they were built on. bad on microsoft for misusing this company.

June update looks good.

Microsoft registers new “Phantom Dust” trademark

I’ll be honest, when I owned an OG Xbox I didn’t use it for very much other than the SNK/Capcom ports, DOA3, & failing miserably at Ninja Gaiden Black. So I never got to experience this cult favorite. The Internetz is pretty hype for this, though. E3 best not disappoint.

Even if they failed to live up to expectations, the pre-E3 stuff has been good enough for me.

I bought the old game and its pretty sad that I never actually played it. Probably gonna be a first day buy for me also.

MS sent out message to preview testers, June preview is rolling out in a couple days. Guess they’ll settle for two weeks of bug squashing then probably roll it out to everybody on June 9th (E3).

It got me thinking: they said the update is going to strip the Live requirement for the apps. So all this time, the paywall was on the user’s end via the OS. Hackers would’ve had fun with that knowledge years ago.

Microsoft is having a buy 2 get 1 free deal.

Ended up picking Fifa 14 & Lego Marvel for $29.99 each & got Titanfall for free. So that’s about $20 a game.

MS not wasting any time, June preview is already out.

It’s okay, they did a lot of subtle changes in the Settings menu. Auto sign-in without Kinect is great.

They still need some kind of file manager, or a better way to delete files such as game clips that games automatically create. This plus DLNA and better messaging system is all I want.
