The NEW Official Xbox® Thread: $399 system without Kinect coming in June

Yeah when people take off their consumer rights glasses, we’re getting way more value with both systems than we ever did with the last gen launch. Last gen was 500 to 600 dollar Blu Ray with slowly forgotten about FPS or Heavenly Sword (that you had to pay way more for if you didn’t get it on launch) vs. 400 to 500 dollar system that had Call of Duty 2 and Project Gotham Racing 3.

We’re already getting more launch exclusives that will actually be strong on both systems and the promise of a lot of other strong titles in the future. Plus the features between both systems like the cloud, kinect, psp connectivity, smart glass, a shit ton of apps, dedicated servers, external hard drive usage, game DVR, instantly switching between games, apps and TV at will (with your voice), systems that allow you to use your body and voice as extra buttons, free games…and we’re whining? I dunno. We should be happy.

At first I was completely jaded about getting into a new system, but after seeing the exclusives that bring back some of my favorite old school stuff and how much more stuff we’re receiving on launch with these systems, it really is something to look forward to.

I think launch and the first couple years that follow are very important to a console. Exclusives just dont seem as important as they use to. I really beleive you are hoping against hope. I wish you werent but yeah…

I mean its a sad time when xbox thread has only several people in it and half are skeptices and the other half is die hard fans. Sad times.

Unrallystic - get bent fool. I will come up in here and say what I want in regards to Xbox One and XBL, be it negative or positive. Unless your ass wants to make a thread for Xbox One skeptics expect them to post here. dope

IMO, history has shown that launch is not really as important as we like to believe. E.G., Dreamcast had one of the best launches of all time, and yet it could barely put up a fight and ultimately couldn’t stand up to the PS2. PS3’s launch was considered pretty awful in terms of available games, accessibility, and the fact that it was priced out of the range of a lot of people, yet it has now outsold the X360 worldwide, which launched a full year before it.

I think it’s something to consider, but I don’t think it’s the most important factor when assessing what consoles will offer.

Yes but when those things launched they were basically only game machines. That isnt the case anymore. Its not just games selling these systems anymore.

Both systems are doing that pretty well. PS3 was the “it can do everything” system so they basically have tried to advertise in the past that they want to be the center of your entertainment room. It’s only when they saw Microsoft using DRM and the backlash that they changed strategy to be a “consumer/gaming” system. Microsoft was trying to do what you said and got blown up by a bunch of people fighting for gaming rights. That means the biggest thing is still probably GAMES.

Both systems are trying to be the center of your entertainment room. They’d be lying if they said they weren’t. Microsoft is pushing that agenda a bit harder while Sony is pushing the games a bit more, but they both ultimately want to do the same thing. Which not just includes games and exclusive games, but generally be what is turned on the most often other than your DVR and TV in the living room.

Games are still the biggest part of what sells a system. If they weren’t you wouldn’t have the whole consumer rights/DRM fiasco to begin with. That has to do directly with what happens to your games and people voted that they didn’t want that. Now that we don’t have that, both systems are offering a lot outside of games and Microsoft specifically looks like they are doing the better job pushing what you can do with a system outside of games. People will pay the 60 dollars for the Xbox Live if they feel what they are getting with the One’s all in one features surpass those of the PS4.

It’s all a matter of time at this point. Nobody will know all of what people will want in the future until they end up wanting it.

They suffered BAD from E3 and have to recover shrug. And if you stuck your head in those thread, you know that people were so reviled by M$ trying to go digital that they won’t look the way of the One…the dislike for the console that’s floating around has so little to do with the current console and mostly everything to do with the E3 variant.

The aspect that sucks is everything is there, the product they are putting out - minus the Kinect/$ aspect is easily on par are past the PS4 in terms of launch value/availability. It’s pretty much last gen in reverse, where last time everyone was ganking on Sony for the price of the PS3, and took time for the two companies to line-up - to where we are now.

To me - I see the trend already, the PS4 is going to be the popular console and M$ is going to have to scrape to get people back and get even again (though not as bad as people on this forum would like you to believe), but it will happen. This isn’t a wii U situation or Dreamcast situation (which is still the best console ever IMO heh). So I can comfortably get the console that brings the most initial value to me without getting wrapped up in the torrent of public opinion. So those ‘timed’ exclusives? That’s a plus for me. KI? Plus for me. The PS4 has nothing at launch that I remotely care about, so I can just wait.

Just remember that SRK has a 95% ‘elitest’ attitude - and represent a super small chunk of ‘true’ public opinion.

Meh, I do have a slight distaste with PS+ - people were crying from the heavens that it was “so good”, yet here I am months later and I don’t feel I’ve gotten my moneys worth - just because you can get a game doesn’t make it something you want to play - and if you don’t want to play it, then its not worth anything to you. And lets be honest, like BF3 - yeah there are expansions, but you still have to pay for them…they aren’t giving you anything beyond a first pass - to tempt you into spending more money. No there isn’t a problem with it, I’m not complaining - at all - seriously, I’m just not going to put PS+ on some pedestal of value. How much would it cost me to go to Gamestop and buy a copy? For how ‘tacked on’ M$ approach is to it, Sony was supposed to be 100% free…so its not like Sony didn’t change course either. A spade is a spade.

Have you not paid attention to anything sony?

Really, I cant even name a single next gen game. Thats not what interests me. And im no dope, I know im not the only one that feels like that. Thousands of others do to.

This new gen is all about beig connected to your system always, imo. Either playing games, watching a stream or streaming yourself, watching netflix or chatting with a buddy. Thats whats new and hot. What can this system do besides play games?

Both can do pretty much the same thing out of the box. Xbox cost one hundred more due to the camera. I have no hope for that. You could pay 100 dollars on top of your PS4 purchase and basically get a vita, media streaming device, and a remote play device,(a vita tv though it wont be in US for a while). Toss in a Vita and im always connected to a PS4. That awesome to me.

I honestly dont know how you can like video games but not like handhelds. Some of the best games Ive played have been on handhelds.

@dirzzt360 all you have to do is go on Xbox’s website to see what they’re doing as far as all in one/always connected. Smart glass so you stay connected with your phone or tablet and add a second screen to your games instead of a proprietary peripheral that you have to shell out for, the all in one connectivity to your TV so you don’t have to change inputs to watch tv, the kinect which basically lets your body and voice add buttons to the controller without buying an extra peripheral that doesn’t have as good quality or functions…its already there.

That was basically their mantra during the DRM days. Most people are being vocal about the PS4 because its “just games”. Not the all in one stuff.

Not a fan of handhelds because they just don’t provide the same gamng experience as a console or PC. Can’t use an arcade stick on a handheld, the screen is a lot smaller, can’t get great sound quality without using headphones, adding meaningful accessories to them
are a lot more of a hassle and it just generally isn’t the same for me. Id rather just have to not buy an extra accessory to connect and to my console games. I haven’t heard anything but negative stuff about the Vita lately. Not that I heavily follow it, but I haven’t heard anything generally good about it lately.

I like that Microsoft is confident in the functionality of the kinect and hope it does catch on for those buying an Xbox. If it works it will invalidate all of the other motion devices and be the gold standard for it. Especially since outside of having complete freedom of holding a controller, that same freedom allows you to add on to how you use your traditional controller without needing something else in your hand or on the controller.

But you’re happy with the Kinect. Is it only because its an forced accessory?

This is the thing about smart glass. I have to buy a 300+ dollar phone or 500 dollar tablet. I dont own either and have no plans to buy one. A vita can do a lot of things a smart phone can (where you think im typing from?) and its half the price with no monthly fee/contract tacked on. The Vita TV is only a hundred bucks…and you would get the handheld experience on your tv, using a normal controller.

Bang for your buck?

I have no problem with anyone feeling like they haven’t gotten their money’s worth with PS+, but I can’t see anyone honestly doing it while defending XBL as a reasonable purchase/subscription (as it offers less for the same money).

I personally feel like I’ve gotten way more than my money’s worth, but the games offered aren’t for everyone - that’s a perfectly fair thing to say.

I don’t hold the value of either the Kinect nor SmartGlass at the same level as I do with the Vita. The Vita is its own device as well, and has served me extremely well in my travels around the world. The fact that it is now getting additional features via the PS4 is icing on the cake.

Also, while it’s technically true that the Kinect is not an additional purchase and so by default you have more control over your system by way of voice/motion control, it’s only true on a technicality. It’s definitely not “free” - there’s a $100 premium added to the cost of the system that is almost directly attributed to the inclusion of the Kinect… SmartGlass is a cool idea, but… it was a cool idea on 360 as well, and that’s about it. It’s certainly got potential, but until there’s more actual utilization of the concept, it will remain just a cool “Hey, check this shit out!” gimmick to me. I want that to change, though. I even bought a Win8 tablet in preparation.

Microsoft and other systems have forced things on people and it worked out also. You were forced to use broadband with the original Xbox and that became the standard soon after. You were forced to pay for online service since the original service and for both PS4/Xbox One, that is the standard if you want access to big titles online.

If it was just built inside of the system instead of something you could place away from it, it would be less of an issue. Its just I’m sure for hardware reasons that couldn’t be done. It is easily the most innovative thing I’ve seen for a console other than the cloud itself, and giving it strong functionality outside of games may be the push it needs to make it be the standard for motion and voice controls. The best part being that you can use it while still holding onto your Xbox One controller or arcade stick.

I’ve heard that there’s a good amount of people who just don’t care for the Vita. Its understandable in the Japan where mobile gaming surpasses console gaming, but in US and Europe a lot of people have already invested in smart phones and tablets. I don’t know one person at my job who doesn’t have a smart phone and there’s a. range of jobs and incomes at my job. From the guy getting paid 8 to 10 an hour to the guys who are making stacks, they all have smart phones for the exception of a few. Who are usually the old/near retirement workers. Which you’d have an easier time selling them a smart phone or a tablet than a Vita.

Pretty much everyone there between the age of 17 and 50 has a smart phone at my job regardless of their income. Microsoft already has the base covered with something that costed more for those people, but offers them way more than a Vita.

I do like handhelds, I have a Vita - it gets more playtime than my consoles (well did). What gave you the impression that I didn’t?

  • :bluu:

Me, no…I was excited when I got a new 360 and got the Kinect, and its lived up to the billing.

It is NOT an SRK approved device because its frankly not accurate enough for people who talk P-linking, frame counts, etc but when it comes to the social aspect? When it comes to playing with my 2 year old or my wife? When my mom and sister drive down from MD? We spend good amount of time on there playing around. It suffers from the same thing the Wii does - too many developers who poorly implement it, but its still fun for us. Even if M$ unpackaged the new Kinect, I’d still put away the money to get the new one.

It’s simply not for everyone and that’s M$ mistake on this one. they would be better off moving units and selling it as an add-on for now and then doing the package thing as prices come down for manufacturing.

You still didnt answer my quetion, DevilJin. I really dont care what happened with other systems fyi, you keep referencing them. Do you even know what the “cloud” does? Probably not. Yet you’re excited about it.

Im lazy so I dont quote people. My comments are directed toward DevilJin most of the time.

Both systems are offering the cloud so I shouldn’t have to explain to you what the cloud does. Its basically using technology via the internet to improve the graphical performance of a system without having to add hardware. In theory its basically a possible patch or fix to PC’s out performing both systems already or very soon after their release.

With PS4 specifically its supposeed to allow ou to eventually play any game virtually that ever came out on any Playstation system. That’s what initially got me interested in the PS4, but once I saw that Xbox was also using the cloud tech and was bringing a more interesting lainch lineup for me, I was set on Xbox. Plus it seems once again that the innovation and online game functionality will be superior with Xbox again.

Let me know if there are any other questions I have not answered.

Somewhat off-topic, but… I just wanted to say I’m pretty impressed that everyone has managed to keep the content relatively civil and reasonable thus far. I know it’s easy to get sucked into feeling like you’re yelling at a wall when people disagree with you, so I’m thankful that this hasn’t devolved into “FUCK YOU XB1/PS4 IS BEST AND YOU’RE AN IDIOT, GO PLAY IN TRAFFIC!”

“Kudos”, for lack of a better term.

Yeah, so you dont know what the cloud actually does? Its all theoretical? All I know that the cloud does atm is allow me to download/upload save data.

Now, about you not really liking peripherals but being ok with the Kinect?

You dont actually answer any questions, you kinda redirect/beat around the bush.

Rampage - word. no reason to get all bent out shape. Just something to talk about. Its good to talk about this shit, imo.

i dunno if you can use dreamcast in this conversation. It launched well, but it didn’t survive because it didn’t work with anyone publish a game that wasn’t exclusive to the system, which is a hard sell, because it didn’t take long for people to learn that there was 0 copywrite protection for the system. dreamcast crumbled not because of being uncompetitive, but because it jumped into the next generation and then stumbled the rest of the way.

and because sega was running the show, and they have proven to be really incompetent since the sega genesis.

i think launch is more important than you believe. a jump start and getting in more homes first is significant… maybe not to enthusiasts, but to the regular person out there that just hears about new systems and how they are going to spend their money early on.

and yeah, its interesting about live. americans love it, but outside of US, people hate that shit. they get worse connections (less/no dedicated servers), less features, worse experiences, and they STILL have to pay for live in order to use simple things on their system. the “cloud” seems like a major stumbling block for people outside of the US.

The Cloud(On MS side). According to Respawn Entertainment (Titanfall devs) is Windows Azure. Used various ways in various games. Forza…Creates custom AI based off players…Titanfall…seems to be handling all the shit. Posted it yesterday, quoted below for anyone’s convenience: (this is all I got. )

As for Kinect? Well. Im putting it back in the box and into the closet. Im still good pressing buttons.

@Rampage, that’s why I think we need a new generation of consoles and devs to really see what the Kinect and Smart Glass can offer. The TV and extra game functionality without having to hold or buy an extra contoller is great. Smart Glass allows you that extra functionality with what you already have in your pocket more often than your vita.

Its really not that hard to have a civilized conversation about systems. I feel games and functionality are more important than systems and I already have both a PS3 and Xbox 360. Like em both, like different things better about both systems. Same will happen here. System wars are for kids who can’t afford both systems and use it as a scapegoat to shoot ammunition at opposing systems. Its just video games and god forbid if exclusives and new technology on an Xbox One appeals to someone.

If it wasn’t for SF2 HDR i probably would have never bought another 360. If it wasn’t for the amazing bluray player the PS3 was, i wouldn’t have bought another one. Last gen the game suck ass IMO. There really was nothing i went gaga over, to be honest the best system was the Nintendo DS. I played the shit out of that one because of the games. No netflix, no online bullshit, never used the music player either.

Reason for the xbox one is Killer Instinct & as multimedia player. If PS4 turns out to be a better multimedia player then im picking that up to but as for now its just shitty games like the the 360/PS3 had last gen.
