The New Kingdom Hearts Thread: On the 13th Year, the Fated Day Arrives

No one fucking cares if you started this thread

No one cares, its a GD discussion thread, and not a technique thread on one of the fighting game boards or a “how to” on tech talk. Its just a bunch of dudes talking about a Final fantasy X Disney crossover that carried on for too long with the kind of writing that belongs on Fanfics dot net.

Here I will do it as you can’t deliver teh goods

To all of you who have been to or are currently at your local game stores Kingdom Hearts III midnight launch or have purchased the game digitally: Just know I hate you and I’m extremely jelly. While I hope you enjoy the game I hate the fact you get to play it before I do.

My copy will be here sometime tomorrow. I am at the mercy of UPS. They’ve been really good about delivering my amazon packages early though so we’ll see how they do tomorrow.

I hope everyone has fun playing the final chapter of the Xehanort Saga.

It’s been a wild and crazy 17 years.

I’m 3 hours into the game and I finally feel I can breathe a little bit, so gonna put down some thoughts, and I’ll try to keep spoilers to an absolute minimum.

Summary
  • My one gripe with the game so far is that running seems janky. Idk if it’s just me, but Sora likes doing this weird stop-start. It looks bad and feels bad. It seems to calm down as time goes on though, and happens a lot less when his Keyblade isn’t out.

  • Okay, there is one other gripe but this one is nitpicking. They throw a TON of mechanics at you pretty quickly and in rapid succession. While they do at least give you explanations compared to games past, it’s still a lot to take in even for veterans. KH1 and 2 were really good at easing you into mechanics, but because Olympus is the “tutorial” level this go around, you simply don’t have time. Also Sora has a lot more stuff compared to KH1 and 2’s beginning (outside of KH2 Critical Mode).

  • Olympus was excellently done design wise. It really sets the tone for the absurd world size in this game. Thebes alone is probably 3 times bigger minimum than every KH world so far, and it’s only half the damn world. They also know how to hit you with the feels and nostalgia.

  • The game is fantastic as of now when it comes to epic scale, you see more and more of it as time goes on.

  • Sora misses Aerial Recovery pretty bad, I hope it unlocks fast.

  • The game feels pretty damn non-stop for these first three hours really. Make sure you have a plethora of time on-hand.

  • The Gummi Ship is interesting…but is now 500x more of a pain in the ass to control, at least in the Lanes Between. Haven’t tried Heartless Missions yet, but it was not fun to use as of now. Hopefully something clicks.

  • Oh and last thing, the characters have FAR more personality than they did in the past. It makes everything feel lived in rather than just scripted plot points.

Guys, please use the Summary tag and spoiler tags when discussing story info. If you feel giving advice on getting through a gameplay situation would spoil stuff, hide it in the summary/spoiler tags.

People have been waiting a long time for this game and I’m not dealing with fuckery. So consider this the one and final warning. I understand accidents will happen, intentionals are eating bans.

Y’all have fun now.

Easter Egg

I see Nomura is low key salty about what happened to Versus XIII.

Oh LOL.

Okay, I’m through the first Four Worlds, time for more extensive notes and observations. Immense spoilers below, though I’m not gonna delve hard into the story anyway.

Summary

Olympus:

  • They really set the tone here of how ginormous the worlds are. The Platinum Trophy is gonna be a bitch to get. Absurdly easy to get lost even with the maps, they probably should’ve expanded them.
  • What’s also set is how much they really expand certain concepts for the movies, in this case the Chaos in Thebes during Hades’ Olympus Takeover. We didn’t get to see a lot of it in the movie because it was focused on Herc trying to overcome the Cyclops powerless before blitzing up to Olympus but because Herc’s fine here we get to see everything going on, and they knocked it out of the part. Absolute anarchy everywhere. Almost hard to remember this is a Tutorial World.
  • Then when you’re finally starting to get fatigued from it, we make it to Olympus and the nostalgia feels come back with the classic OC theme. It’s like we made it home, but man is this place absolutely gorgeous to look at. I just had to walk around for a while just enjoying the scenery.
  • Then fighting the remaining Three Titans while on top of Zeus’ trapped body…just insanity. Props to them for making the Tornado Titan the Final Boss, the poor dude got jipped in the movie, now he gets some shine.
  • I will say it’s a shame that Phil gets demoted to a non-speaking role, probably some behind the scenes stuff there.

Dark World:

  • A surprise return to the Dark World, and a short aside with Riku playable against the Demon Tower! Hope you got some practice back in 0.2, it helps here because the Tower is still a wrecking machine.

Twilight Town:

  • Speaking of which, we get dumped into Twilight Town again and the first thing we see…is essentially the first thing we saw when KH3 was announced. The Demon Tide in Twilight Town. I…shit bricks considering how much pain it caused in 0.2 and its health is exactly the same, but the fight is actually (at least in Stage 1, the only part we get here) is much harder because Sora is a damn weenie at the moment compared to Aqua and the arena is much tougher to get a hit on him. Actually got close to dying a couple of times until I hit the health gate to move on.
  • Here though we get the full sense of how they’re now realizing towns compared to older KH games. Mainly, PEOPLE. Now, we did know this would be a thing back a few months ago when they were discussing the Kingdom of Corona but I was skeptical at how they would implement it. I’m legitimately impressed with what they did. People just out and about, talking about things. Again, gives the place a true lived in feeling…though you’d think they’d all be a lot more freaked out considering the Demon Tide just came through the damn place. But the place feels like a true town now.
  • Also, HPO were also WAY too chill about running from the Demon Tide. What the hell was their plan if SDG didn’t show up?
  • Anyway, at least in the meantime Twilight Town actually might be smaller than KH2’s version. The Tram Common is pretty much the same size as before, maybe a slight bit bigger, the Woods are bigger, and the front of the Old Mansion is the same. But we’re missing out on a lot of the other areas. Twilight Town was a relatively big world in KH2 anyway, but it’s still a bit disappointing, though a return trip may remedy this.
  • The Bistro with Remy is…interesting. I don’t know how much time I’ll really spend on it.
  • I don’t really have much interest in Classic Kingdom, I just hope I’m not missing out on insane goodies for skipping it.
  • The Gummiphone is neat to use though.

Toy Box:

  • What…the…fuck?! That entire “commercial” was just a big fuck you about Versus XIII, because that’s definitely Nomura’s original vision for the game…with a bunch of tweaks of course. But I thought S-E suddenly got crafty with their advertisement game for a second.
  • This world was pretty cool to roam around in…except for the part where you need to stack blocks with the Gigas. That was pretty damn annoying.
  • Hey, Dissidia Advertisement, Sora trying to make his case to get into that game.
  • Honestly not much to say since it was the E3 Demo World which captured a fair bit of it.

Kingdom of Corona:

  • The first real “movie retelling” world, and I think only one of two with Arrendelle. They went all out with painstakingly recreating the movie faithfully, even bringing back the director for it. Nearly everything is taken wholesale, with some tweaks to fit in the Heartless/Nobodies and they made it relatively seamless.
  • The good is that Sora is made into a legitimate side character, he doesn’t affect the plot all too much. Matter of fact, the major fights of the world are actively away from Rapunzel/Flynn while they’re doing Tangled things. SDG doesn’t feel shoehorned in and actually feel like they fit in.
  • The downside is that in order to accommodate this, they skipped several scenes which are still implied to have happened. If you watched the movie beforehand, this isn’t a big deal, and the game obviously expects you to have done so already. If you haven’t, things like why Rapunzel is calling Flynn Eugene will go right over your head.
  • Probably the biggest plot hole created was Flynn’s escape from execution. In the movie, it was done by all the allies him and Rapunzel gained through the movie. Allies that they don’t have in this game because the Heartless stand in for Flynn’s attempted to scare her rather than the Ugly Duckling. In other words, how the fuck did he escape? No way Max did it single-handedly. They probably should’ve just had SDG break him out but that probably wouldn’t have gone over well.
  • I don’t know why they teased Mother Gothel having the powers of Darkness when ultimately Marluxia is the one who makes her into a Heartless anyway. I guess to subtly explain why the now combat able Rapunzel couldn’t fight her off so they could set up the stabbing scene.

Gameplay:

  • I don’t think it’s as outright tight as KH2, but luckily there’s enough wrinkles to really keep you on your toes.
  • However, defense is probably at its worst in this game, even with an Air Guard/Dodge. We don’t have KH2’s very strong Guard or the absurdly busted Reflect, and we don’t have KH1’s Aero defense. It makes defending yourself pretty damn dicey early on, especially without Aerial Recovery.
  • I love the Keyblade Switching mechanic, I just wish they went a step further and allowed us to switch during combos. But meh, I guess they didn’t want to go full DMC.
  • I still feel movement is a little janky but it’s not that bad overall.
  • I love how now Accessories can grant abilities and not just Keyblades. The ability to use Waterza this early has been a boon.
  • Also the Keyblade Forge to make sure that no Keyblade is left behind is fantastic and also makes sense. Since Formchanges are tied to Keyblades they needed to go out of their way to keep all of them relevant.
  • Attraction Flows…I already grew tired of them, which I expected. Half of them are pretty bad and limited, the other half are just busted but random and take you out of the experience. Plus, while I like how they bring back the Traverse Town Battle Music, I don’t like how it replaces whatever active OST is no matter the situation. Stop replacing Tension Rising damn it!
  • The Gummi Ship I did get used to mostly. Just had to stop trying to mess with the camera, it’s definitely a trip. While I still won’t go out of my way to call it “great”, it’s still more fun than the last two offerings to get to a world. I feel though that Ship Combat is worse than KH2…but also more sparing of my damn thumbs so I’ll take the trade-off.

Ultimately, I feel it was worth braving the snow to get this.

So now that most of you have finished the game too, huge spoilers ahead.

Summary

I was a bit disappointed with how the whole story/saving is done in the last 5-6 hours. I feel like Xemnas and MX shouldn’t have been defeated by Sora, with Roxas/Xion/Axel and Terra/Ven/Aqua respectively deserving a more important role in defeating these ennemies. I get he’s the hero, but it still feels wrong.
We don’t see Roxas and Ven interacting, same for Riku and Terra, Kairi is still useless and the opportunity to have her, Sora and Riku fighting alongside wasn’t exploited.
I think I missed something about Xion’s return since she’s supposed to have returned to Sora in Days. Another replica? Time travel? How’s her heart back?

Sora gets broken really quick, granted I played in standard but apparently Proud isn’t that hard either. I loved the boss rush in Keyblade Graveyard, the remixed songs were incredible too. Hopefully we get data fights to do it again or 1 vs 1. Another thing I liked was Vanitas fights. One with Aqua and a last one in the end, it should have been done more after Disney worlds. Maybe I’m just salty because seeing Roxas again made me realize I actually like him and he deserved to kick Xemnas’s ass. Oh and Xemnas’s voice is incredible
Still a really great game, I had a blast with it.

Funny story… The Frozen keyblade actually ended up being my favorite.

Okay on one hand, I’m happy a lot of stuff this game desperately needed got added.

On another hand, if they had just delayed the game to add all of this from the start I think everyone would’ve been a lot happier…but because of the “KH3 is vaporware” memes that was never happening sadly. Because all of this really should’ve been in the initial game. Playable Kairi, explorable Scala Ad Caelum, boss fights against the entire Organization 1v1 (please give us a Coliseum or Data place for rematches), and even the RG Restoration Committee so people would stop bitching about the lack of FF characters.

Ultimately I think dealing with the initial blowback of people getting downtrodden about another delay would’ve been better than this, but here we are.

So I should actually attempt to finish the game now? :joy:

Since ReMind is essentially a coda to KH3, if you actually would want to play the DLC yeah you’d have to finish the game in the next month. Preferably on Critical if you actually want any semblance of a challenge.

Man. The voice acting in KHIII is rough. There’s like…no emotion or feeling or tone. Or anything. It legit just feels like script reading instead of being acted out.

Maybe it’s me looking through Rose tinted glasses but I remember all the previous games having really awesome voice acting.

When you get later in a game franchise I feel more and more VAs just start phoning it in. Most of the VAs in earlier KH had a lot more to prove, compared to now where they know they have secured jobs.

I’ll say BBS had it far worse though. I love Willa Holland but she’s an example of someone who needs to be seen to convey her emotions, her voice is just often very monotone otherwise. She can display great facial reactions though.

I agree with this. I’ve played every KH title but 3. I own 3 but I didn’t even play past the prologue

She VA’s Aqua, right? I think she was fine in BBS. Aqua is suppose to be the stoic one of the group. She’s the balance of Terra and not Roxas. Just in three it doesn’t sound stoic or she’s in deep thought or conflicted. Just sounds like she’s bored with what she’s reading lol.

Which honestly by the end of it was likely the entire cast

The thing is I don’t think Aqua was supposed to be that stoic in BBS. In 3/0.2 I give it a pass due to the circumstances (if I was stuck in hell for 11 years I’d struggle with emotional range too) but in BBS she was supposed to have a bit more range dealing with all the crap in that game but it was played a bit too wooden for my tastes.

And yeah I don’t blame you for not bothering with KH3. I’ll be frank, the base version of this game…I won’t say is bad because I think there’s some good stuff to it but it’s definitely on the low end of the KH franchise. It pretty much had the exact same problem as vanilla KH2. Too easy and no point in using half the shit you get in the game, and most of the stuff you do in the game has no bearing on anything. But shit, even KH2 at least gave a little to use it on in the midgame with Xaldin and Demyx, and then you still had the Paradox Cups and Sephiroth to fuck around with later. KH3 you had none of that until the very end game and everything was still easy and truncated. In a first runthrough of KH2 I remember dying to pretty much a bunch of Org members on Normal, but in KH3 I didn’t die once which is absurdly poor challenge.

Critical fixes the Midgame issue, and ReMind seems to fix the Endgame issue…somewhat. It’ll only do it completely if we have the ability to get rematches with the Org ala the Data Fights. But at the same time it only exacerbates the issue with KH3 where 80% of the game is essentially backloaded into the final few areas and everything you do the first 15-30 hours (really variable depending on how much you like to explore) is all but irrelevant. It’s a game that desperately wanted to get away from the Disney Worlds, but obviously couldn’t since that’s the only reason at least 75% of its fanbase plays the games. To Nomura’s credit, he went the complete opposite route of Kojima and still put in the work in making the Disney worlds relatively fun to stomp around in even if they have no narrative value to the game.

I guess now I have reason to do a full Crit run.
