The New Definitive HDTV Lag FAQ

clean the sensor maybe?

I don’t have any noticeable lag playing anything on my Sony 40" LCD.

It sure does, I haven’t tested anything out just yet. When playing fighting games though I turn on Game mode and turn off cinemotion. No problems as of yet.

I know through VGA it has two types of picture: Video and Text. I don’t know if that will effect anything.

This is an example of a completely worthless post/waste of information.

We know that all HDTVs lag. You claim yours doesn’t lag, but not only do you not provide solid test numbers and specify inputs using a test in the OP, you didn’t even post the model number of your television. There are probably upwards of thirty different 40" Sony LCDs.

These kinds of posts in informational threads will definitely lead to neg rep and/or bans.

I managed to get my guitar fixed in a position that was consistently registering results, so my RB2 results on my LC-42D64u were consistently 28-29ms, regardless of the “mode” selected.

The “game mode” is fairly useless, as far as the RB2 test is concerned.

I wish I had a CRT to do stop watch tests with.

Panasonic Viera 50" 1080p plasma test results: (using RB2 auto calibrate)
52 ms of Audio lag
31 ms of Video lag

When I did the calibration manually for the drums I was consistently getting -5 to 5 ms of video lag, so it may be just my eyes but either way my lag is fairly small.

Found a Review that tested the benq e2400hd for input lag it got an avg of 0 ms input lag. Also has a chart that shows the input lag of other 24inch monitors.

Which panasonic plasma is it exactly, there is a all bunch of them ?

Don’t get all sad and start crying. I didn’t say my TV doesn’t lag. I wrote I didn’t notice any lagging which meant there might have been but I couldn’t see it. TV is a KDL-40Z4100 hooked up to my PS3 via HDMI. Have a nice day!

Sony XBR8 55" LED backlit-

Automatic RB2 Guitar Video Calibration Test:
360 HDMI game mode OFF: 79-80ms
360 HDMI game made ON: 30ms (consistently- tested 5x)

360 VGA game made OFF: 79-80ms
360 VGA game made ON: 30ms (again consistently)

PS3 HDMI game mode OFF: 59-60ms
PS3 HDMI game mode ON: 30-35ms (varied)

Audio lag for both was minimal from I think 2ms-4ms, for those who care.

Conclusion: Superb TV for well… TV & movies (blu-ray). Ehh for street fighter. Looks like i’ll have to pick up a viewsonic.

Questions for Poonage:

  1. Do you know why VGA on xbox wasn’t making a difference in lag? Really disappointed it didn’t reduce the lag.
  2. Does the viewsonic come in other sizes?

XBR8 55"???!!! Wow that must have set you back like 5K!

Was this connected via VGA or HDMI? I was actually thinking about buying that very TV, so I am especially curious about these results. 31ms seems quite close to the “unacceptable” range of delay as described in the OP, so now I’m wondering if I’d be better off looking elsewhere

Well the only reason for the xbox360 VGA to be lagless would be if your TV VGA input is lagless, and there is no reason for it as long as the “game mode” disable all video processing the VGA would.

So it seems your game mode works “pretty well” but your TV does a pretty average job in general as far as this lag is concerned.

For my information, to perform the automatic test do you need the full rockband2 game/guitar/drum or just any guitar?

/facepalm.

Please read the first post again. We’re looking for actual information here. Not a vague description of what KIND of tv you have and if you notice it’s there.

It IS there and you could at least tell us what model you’re reffering to. And while you might not notice it, it doesn’t mean you aren’t lagging a frame or 2 and it’s not affecting your game.

Do a test a few times, make a note of your model number, and get back with us.

Thanks, that makes sense. About the test, you’d just need the official guitar and game (no drums). Dunno bout 3rd party or GH guitars but I would play it safe with the official one since it’s for sure capable of receiving the “seizure” (blinking light auto) test.

I cannot thank you enough for this useful information , poonage. I should probably buy a VGA cable for one of my big HDTVs.

Also

I want to thank you too , Reth , cause I was searching for a small HD monitor with unnoticable lag … and now the search seems pretty much over . But yea , if I connect my PS3/XBOX via HDMI I’ll get like , 0 imput lag? Hard to believe…

You might want to read that review a little more carefully. Their tests are relative. Their “control” is also an LCD rather than a CRT. So, “0 lag” in this case means “it lags as much as this other LCD we have that may or may not lag”.

I can’t remember if this was posted in this thread or not (tbh, too lazy to look… but you might be, also, so check it out):

Near the end it claims the following monitor lags about as much as a CRT, which is not at all:

As far as I can tell, this thing isn’t available in the U.S. yet. All the reviews and info are from the U.K. However, I haven’t actually finished researching this topic, but I’d definitely recommend you look further into it before purchasing anything if lag is a concern for you.

Edit: All instances of lag in this post refer specifically to input lag, since that’s the focus of the linked article.

I would just like to say that I have HP LP2475w and it does have no lag with Tekken 5 DR or any other game I tried. Just love it and it’s not that much expensive.

Fantastic thread. Thank you for posting this, the old one was so flooded.

Awesome! I think I’ll be looking into a BenQ monitor for my birthday, seems much more affordable than a commercial display.

Poonage,

Finally cleared all the blur I had on the hdtv issues.

I have 2 questions though.

How much do you think or know the microsoft VGA cable (for xbox) reduces lag? (i know it depends on the tv) but I would want to know an estimate. Does it make the game playable under 8ms? I heard your tv does 4ms.

Same question for the ps3/wii cable you posted in your thread.

Also, is it worth getting the HD Fury cable? Does this perform better than the other 2 cheaper cables you mentioned?
