Hey guys this is my first post on srk, so be gentle with me I thought everyone here would love to see this comic I bought a couple of months ago. This comic was the “official” adaptation of the street fighter series by Malibu comics. This series came out in 1993 and was canceled only after three issues because of Capcom’s disappointment with it. At the end of this issue there is even an apology about the short lifespan of this comic by the producers. The art is terrible, the situations are unintentionally hilarious and with misspellings such as blanca and chan li, you know this has to be gold. Check it out here.
I still have my copy of issue two, which is definitely one of my prized possessions. Sagat whoops the shit out of Ken and ends up scalping him. Later, Sagat puts Ken’s scalp in a car and sends the car to Ryu. Ryu beats up the car (I think they were trying to give context to the bonus round) and finds the scalp. Standing over the busted remains of the car, Ryu holds up the scalp, concluding that the patches of blond hair belong to Ken. Tears in his eyes, clutching the scalp, Ryu screams, “Ken!!! My oldest friend! NOOOOOOO!!!” It’s one of the most moving scenes of friendship I have ever read in the comic book medium.
I think I still have this in gold-foiled graphic novel form sitting around here somewhere. The character interpretations are hilariously obnoxious. In the first two pages Chun Li knocks Ryu on his ass, demands he tell her that she’s the world’s strongest, and then starts giving him the tongue, in that order. Epic.
In the epilogue they talked about the cancellation and teased about how they were planning to show how Sagat got his eyepatch. Now one can only imagine.
lol the comic I had offered all 3 issues gold foiled editions for 15 dollars I think. And Zephyr are you serious about what happened in issue 2 because that’s a big wtf right there.
That link even contains the image I was talking about where Ryu finds Ken’s scalp. Truly, one of the greatest last page splash page cliffhangers of all time.
I’m glad I found this. This is golden! Shen-Long looks like an evil wizard (and his names Gouken). But the game was in its infancy and Alpha cleared things up and brought new characters and the story into a great perspective.
I’m glad Udon and the Japanese picked up on Street Fighter comics. They do a wonderful job. I’d check out Sakura Ganbaru! or Street Fighter Alpha by Masahiko Nakahira for a good serious read. You can get it on sites like Amazon and stuff if you’re interested.
