Ah the hell. Thats BLOOD WARRIORS. Fuck shit is mad fun.
Clay Fighters was pretty obscure. Back in the day I made the mistake of renting it from the mall…didn’t make that mistake twice
I can now see why there was such a backlash for fighting games…
tobal 2 has some unseen mechanics till this day.

134 shows the unique grapple system. There’s nothing really like it till this day.
223 shows the throw counter system. If one person tries to throw you, every character can counter the throw and then throw back. However, this goes up to 10+ times or something like that.
114 shows you the " back down" feature in this game. If you get hit while running away FURTHER than outside of optimal fighting range and you get hit in the process, the game will put you in a dizzy if hit. It doesn’t mean you can’t run, if you maintain perfect defensive spacing, there is no punishment. Only running away for the sake of running away will get you in that situation. Feels like the designers wanted the characters to fight rather than to take advantage of running away.
The game focus around OKI like any other 3d fighter. There are body rolls like in tekken and a quick get up.
just frames, just defend techniques, quick get up, unblockables that take a while to develop so they aren’t so broken. Game had a lot of mechanics we use till this day. Really great concept\game design by the people who made this game. Tobal #1 made it here but compared to tobal #2, it’s nothing. tobal 2 was only released in japan and also has an insane amount of characters in it, like 200+ iirc.
^^ Squaresoft made it, back when in the PS1 days when they were very experimental. They were the best devs during that time. Shame that all they’re doing now is just RPGs. Guess no sequels.
I thought dream factory were the ones that made it and squaresoft were only the publishers?
akira toriyama, mr dbz, was the one creating all the character designs which is why some of them were very weird. Boxing chicken for example and that pink demon thing.
Oh, DevilJin01 was talking about that game? Well then, the arcade that had a tournament for that game was Tokyo Ranking Fighters. Unfortunately, I haven’t seen many of the original matches from that tournament on youtube. I only remember seeing one. I use to have all of the matches, but I lost them years ago to a faulty HDD.
You’re right. They also made The Bouncer. That was a let down. Beat em’ up + RPG sounded like win to me. : (
Your talk about Tobal no. 2 reminds me about the game’s combos. They’re pretty difficult with those random just frames and awkwardly long juggle links. Hit up Tragic’s combos (combo guide on GameFAQs) to see what I mean, if you haven’t already tried those combos out.
I wouldn’t call Bloodstorm obscure. Game got massive attention for being an MK-ripoff with more blood and retarded cheat codes. The machines I saw had pretty good sized crowds. It also got news for getting Daniel Pesina fired from Midway for appearing in an ad for it in his Johnny Cage outfit.
Time Killers, which Bloodstorm is the sequal of, is obscure though. Its button layout was placed like a human body, with one button for the head and limbs accordingly. It didn’t last long in arcades though because of the gore.
On a seperate note, who remembers the Sonic fighting game?
oh shit time killers, and bloodstorm brings back some childhood memories…

I played that once with some friends. The 3D one right? Didn’t really like it.
I heard it was quite good.
I got it in the Gems Collection. It’s not bad, but it sure ain’t no VF. The characters are too similar, most of them have similar stance/moveset, and I didn’t like the barrier system. Barrier was the only way to guard, and you’ll have to use a barrier to go into CC mode. You only had 5, and if you ran out, you were screwed for the rest of the match. I often change the barrier amount to 7 or choose the option to repelished them. The frame rate though, was amazing. I also enjoyed the cartoony strecthy and flattening of the fighters. Fun game. Bark was my main.
Maybe not that obscure, but I used to play Dynasty Warriors (the original, a PSX fighting game) a lot back then. Anyone else ever try that?
I remember seeing ads about this in several magazines (Gamepro, EGM), thought it looked interesting, but ultimately I never did manage to buy it.
How was the game played, anyway? Is it more in line with the DW games but in a more 1-to-1 person battles or what?
I feel the need to point out (it might have been done already) what a steaming pile of dog shit this game is.

Who the fuck green lighted that project? Someone might have suggested composing more then one song for the game.
Havn’t played much of the other DW’s, but the first one is a pretty standard “old 3D fighter”. Like Soul Blade, Toshinden etc.
Ah I see.
Might give a look round for this and both Bushido Blades (thanks to that topic) then.
i’ve seen worse
check out way of the warrior for the 3do
Yeah, somebody mentioned Evil Zone… that game was pretty cool. The voices were annoying, and it was a lot of soap opera drama, but quite fun.
