For those of you who suddenly want spear stuffs in MHW, what would you want out of it when compared to Lance/Insect Glaive stuffs?

No insect, no shield.

I’m not seeing how spear without insect would functionally be different. Will it have a mix of sweep and stabbing attacks? Will the attacks be faster? What will it have over lance and glaive to make up for not having defense and air mobility?

Remove blocking, removing jump or mounting stuff.

Give it big swings, big damage with positioning or quick stabs and slashes with a dodge or counter mechanic.

Maybe it could have coatings like the bow? Or maybe you can have a mechanic that allows you to attach things to it to? Oh what about a spear with chain? You could throw the spear into a surface and anchor the chain to another to create a tipping hazard for the monster. You could switch between spear or using the chain as a whip. Oh and what about a motor attached that to the spear that allows the chain to function as a grappling hook? Throw spear then use the chain to grapple?

Gonna get on to smash my head against AT Nerg in a bit. I’m hoping he feels as different as AT Xeno did.

I main Spear/Lance in various ‘hunting games’ (MH, GE, FW) and associate the weapon with usually having the following characteristics in some form:

  • Thrust/Pierce ATK element attribute
  • linear attack range motion; forward-focused thrusts (primary), anything else secondary (slashes, sweeps, etc)
  • effectiveness at a farther range
  • mobility/momentum based action inclinations (if applicable)
  • special effects; weakpoint critical, multi-hit piercing

For the most part, actions feel somewhat limiting but are focused, IMO; you target vulnerable parts and through various movement/positioning options, you can tend to push the momentum in your favor (at range), but at the cost of your stamina resource. It takes a bit of effort to utilize whatever movement options with your attack options at first, but when it comes together, things just work out really well.

If you took Kiryl’s spear moveset/motions from DQH and tailored it for MHW, you could have something there… Maybe.

TBH if IG had more prominent thrust attacks (ground & air), I’d probably like the weapon more, lol.

tbh I like the ideas they had with the boomerang weapon, I can already imagine the possibilities with it.

I want to run charge blade against AT Nerg but I don’t have a shield jewel. :pensive:

You don’t need Guard Up. He doesn’t have unblockable attacks. He does have attacks that do so much stamina damage on block that it breaks, but Guard Up doesn’t prevent that type of thing

Oh well in that case I could use some Guard jewels.

And another thing does he pull a Teostra and true combos off of roars.

I ran guard 5 against AT Nerg and survived.

The close-range aerial dive and the tail spin are the two attacks you should be wary about when blocking.

I also got another Guard Up deco on this last run too, lol.

Everytime I have time to play and get some KT runs in, I have dc’d during the runs.

This is annoying asf.

2 more AT Elder dragons to slay to get caught up on the “meta” or whatever.

I forgot to kill and grind AT Xeno for PS4 gunner account…

Killed AT Nerg twice to start out. Next day he straight rekt me 5 times in a row. Day after that he rekt me one more time then I got a kill the next. Later that night I nearly massacred him within 10 minutes lol
