Yup. give me a sec.
My mind is racing already. Saturday is the first real competition that I’ll have been in. I try to think of it as another practice that’s open to the public, since it’s amateur and “doesn’t matter”, but I’m not doing a good job of convincing myself.
I think I’m in a good place though. When I think about it and try to envision the event, all I can see is how I’ll win. I’m just worried that it’s also a dangerous place to be. I’m nervous, but I really feel that it’s more because I want to put on a good show for the people watching, to try and show them how fun it can be, and hopefully get more people involved. (It’s a struggle down here to get people to even come and train, much less compete.) Shit, even if I do lose, I hope the other guy beats me with something awesome.
The more I get involved, the more respect I have for the people that do this. Even with just the grappling that I’m doing currently. It’s something I fully expected, but when the pressure started to hit, I realized that now I’ve actually reached that point.
Sorry for the rambling. Mind’s running a mile a minute. This is the first step towards something that I’ve wanted to do for a long time. Win lose or draw, I’m going to have a good time.
Semmy vs Overeem in the finals.
Sounds fun, good luck. I too want to grapple in a comp at some point, but since everyone sand bags I need more time to improve.
I been out for a month with a random calf injury. Went back this monday for some greco, get taken down, then some other guys grappling trip over us and this gigantic dude lands on my newly healed calf. So I’m out this week. Hopefully next week I can start again. If I didn’t have fallout new vegas or my woman I would have killed somebody already. Not depressed but real fucking angry that I can’t participate in something that means a lot to me.
The only sports I played when I was younger were baseball when I was a kid/early teen, and rugby as a teenager. Other than that, I just skated my teenage years away. This is the first competitive thing I have done in a one-on-one type setup.
I have every intention of gettin’ dat dubya though. :karate:
Thanks man, appreciate it. Down here we don’t have an official ranked school with a belt system or anything, and essentially do nogi jits and wrestling. Some of the guys that I’m going to be up against could definitely qualify as sandbaggers because of their relative experience, but I think they were almost asked to compete because of the poor turnout that we got initially.

Playing it safe; picks above.
I want to risk and say Maia by TKO which I know will get me crazy bad looks, but I’m too close to the top of the points to do it  . I’m reserving my “unlikely” pick for Babalu. He’s been a KO magnet lately, but I still bet on him every chance I get.
Yes, I have devised that round 3 picks are the way to go. You may have noticed a severe increase in bitchassness in my picks recently because of this.
edit:
VVVVV Nam Phan, by Submission, Round 3, if that’s the case below. VVVVV
They added Nam Phan vs Leonard Garcia to the fight card link on ufc.com as well. From the article they make it sound like its not a prelim.
Brookins UD
Bonnar Rd2 TKO
Maia rd 3 sub
Hendricks UD
Phan by UD
Hendo Rd3 tko
Lawler UD
Daley RD1 KO
Silva UD
Radach UD
I’m a fan of Nam Phan. He always keeps going forward and he throws body shots. I don’t see many fighters in the UFC going to the body with punches. Guess it kinda leaves you open.
There’s a fighter from the UK who throws nasty body blows. He fought on UFC 87?? or 97?? Bald guy UK fighting someone from Hawaii. Nastyyy body blows.
Yeah, but all the people that they’re fighting (except for Sobral) are IMO relatively overrated from what I’ve seen, so I’m just pushing my luck lol. That, and I dislike Daley, so I want him to lose.
No good reason really. Mostly because he beats the fighters that I like, and he talks like a brit. In all seriousness though, he’s a good fighter. Nothing really against him major until he threw that sucker punch. It will be an entertaining fight for sure.
And when I say relatively overrated, I meant I didn’t see anything in them to give them a Favorite status on the betting boards. Like, relative to the person they’re fighting. From what (little) I know about some of the fighters, I’d just put them closer to even personally, which is why I’m going against the favorite.
Not meaning it in a “oh these fighters are all bad” sorta way, strictly relative to the people they’re fighting. Bonnar is I suppose the exception. I think he’s alright, but the only thing I can ever depend on him to do reliably is get hit a whole bunch. Sometimes he wins while doing it, sometimes he loses, so it was a toss-up for me.
I feel that the people that Rick Story has beaten are better than the people that Johny Hendricks has beaten (save Amir, but that was an extremely early stoppage IMO)
Ugh, gonna be switching back and forth between the two…
