The Misadventures of a Traveling Computer Repairman

Yo Duckie you said a page ago that getting your A+ doesn’t make any difference. Why? I know a bit about tech after going to a chappy tech school and they made it seem like getting certified was the bees knees.

Of course they did, they need to justify that crazy tuition fee they charged you. I know, I went to school for it. Didn’t learn shit.

Just get experience any way you can. They value that shit far more than some dumb certificate.

Basically. If you can walk into the interview, lay is down, show em you know your shit, they’ll get behind that more then the certs.

A+ Certification doesn’t hurt or help either way. It’s nice if you have it, but if you don’t then you just need to prove yourself.

I’ll put it this way: since moving to Austin, 90% of my contract work has been on printers. There is a certification for printers. I don’t have it, yet I get around three service orders a day that revolve around printers.

Haha shit maybe you can help me out with my Printer.

i’ll probably be getting A+ pretty soon just because old people with money love Mickey Mouse diplomas. i’m not taking the class, i’ll just read the book and walk in on the exam with my wang out.

i read a few pages whenever i’m on the john. i’m on about page 30 now. here’s some info straight from the manual:

  1. surprisingly if you look and smell like you just stepped out of a bog, clients might be on the defensive when they first meet you. do your best to shower from time to time.
  2. don’t call your client a ‘shithead’

watch out, shitheads. im about to be certified.

Best Book ever.

Yo I must have this book.

So what is the best printer I can affordably get that has ridiculously cheap ink?

What book is that?

I work on commercial printers. I have no idea how much they cost.

I personally use an Epson Stylus NX330. The high-yield cartridges are less than $20.

Firs thought that came up to my head, ‘…gates was NEVER an issue with Solid Snake before though…’ . Good stuff though on folks helping you out in time of need.

@Shaft_Agent: Good luck on that A+!

hp printers are very good, also if u want real cheap, just refill the empty cartridges, its really easy to do with some hp models, the refill kits last very long.

I once found a living mouse inside a customer’s desktop.

I wasn’t on site, tough. The customer had brought his computer to our shop for repair, I can’t remember what was wrong with his computer since this happened about 8 years ago but I insisted that the live rodent should be mentioned to the customer.

fuck honor, especially in a corporate environment where the setups and configs are homogonized and the only thing that you miss after a format is some outlook settings, its a lot more efficient use of your time. 30 mins to re-image/re-install apps vs 6 hours of gutting a virus infected registry is a pretty easy sell.

I agree. Unless you’re trying to milk the customer, there’s no reason to “fix” the problem. If you don’t catch everything, you’re actually doing a disservice by letting them think the computer is clean.

I was called Thursday about a work order where I was requested by name, but I couldn’t service it until today. No problem. They wanted me, so they could wait. It was told the parts were shipping to site, which is good because this was an hour away.

So, after making the drive from Austin to San Marcos, I arrive on-site to find that the part hadn’t arrived. Now, keep in mind here that when I get a call about a work order, it’s because the parts have already arrived on-site, so it arrived somewhere and I was called to install it. I checked my work order (which would have tracking info) and the tracking # wasn’t anything common. I called dispatch to find out what happened, and UPS had tried twice to deliver it to the business but they couldn’t find it (note: this is BS, as UPS delivers there DAILY. I’ve talked to the driver twice.) and when they couldn’t deliver it, it got shipped to Austin.

Austin, as in I-was-currently-an-hour-away, Austin.

I was irritated, but kept my cool. I asked the lady why I hadn’t been informed, stating that the info about the package wasn’t even in my paperwork, when I had just printed out this morning. There was nothing that could be done, so I had to drive back home. I had other orders I could have filled, too. I’m booked for tomorrow, so I can’t come back out until Thursday, meaning some other tech may get the assignment.

Moral of the story: never have an item shipped to site. Have it held for pickup at the nearest UPS customer center.

In a situation like that does your company compensate you for gas since they wasted your time and your money?

They fucking well better…
