The Magic: The Gathering Thread

Big issue is fluctuation. Cards can go from 0-100 real quick but can also go from 100-20 just as fast. Still if that is a flat REAL(tcg low kinda thing) 5k then zero reason a real friend should not give you something solid offer like 4k. But 3k LESS to me just seems scum-baggy and I make my living buying and selling shit but I wouldn’t fuck someone over and especially a friend with little one who just needs some quick bread unless thats all I really had to offer.

Sad part is local shops can be worse. The one scumbag shop is bad on this shit, they had some dude being upfront he strapped on cash and that nigga handed the owner a stack I knew was worth at least $500 minimum and he was like $175 and the dude had to get more cards out of his binder. Makes me sick when people are so ruthless.

Side actual Magic related. Almost done with my self ban to play live again. Needed to take a break from this shit. But next month on my B-day I can play again lol. Feel like some grounded kid but I know its for the better. Still finding Modern fun which is odd, still not half of Legacy good but better than Vintage currently.

I literally just experienced that. Thought tarns were 50. They totally were…3 months ago.

Speaking of scumbag LGS people, I once went to a different store to offload about $80 worth of standard staples. I asked for the location where I could punch things into a kiosk or something and the guy said he could look at the stuff for me. He sorts them about and tells me it would be $12. I told him that there was no way that was possible and even showed on my phone that the store’s website revealed that just one of the cards was worth about $20. Instead of apologizing or even admitting that he wasn’t even aware of the price, he gave me an offended look and said “well I was just trying to save you some time…” Really? I don’t know anyone who really feels that shaving off maybe 4 minutes is worth $68. I shudder at thinking who might have visited the store without looking up the price beforehand.

Ironically, the people who I see shortchanging people for cards tend to not be that close to the store owners. I understand if something isn’t your most favorite job, but you’re harming the store screwing over people. People try to act like the stereotypical businessman without any business experience and end up costing the owners a ton of rep.

In other news, I tried taking faeries again to a modern weekly and went 3-1 again. I changed it up by putting in smuggler’s copters, lightly splashing white for path+Sorin, and taking out things like spell snare, Vendilion Clique, and even Kalitas. Deck ended up outperforming expectations. Beat mono white humans, elves, and affinity. Lost to eldrazi TRON. I am really enjoying these vehicles because they are ridiculously undercosted for their stats and abilities. To top the cherry off, common board wipes are absolutely useless against them. People brought in stuff like stony silence which ended up being fine since a gameplan of BB+SSS and manlands gets the job done anyway. I played against more people who seemed really interested in vehicles working in a modern deck, and even beat some people whom were very vocal about how vehicles are too “slow” for modern. Maybe they are, but if they are giving me consistent results then they are giving me consistent results.

I cannot beat eldrazi as faeries though. TRON I at least can hope for hand disruption and time to use counterspells, but there’s no way I can beat t2 or t3 Thought-knots or running smashers. I tried looking at other deck guides to see how other people deal with eldrazi, but it seems like if you run a fair deck that you can’t afford to go 1 for 1 against each threat as they tend to indirectly require 2 for 1ing yourself. I even proxy tested if I had damnation instead of yahenni’s expertise as a board wipe, but basically I still cannot win if they throw down virtually anything as a topdeck. I would have to hope that they only draw into like a matter reshaper and that I am not low enough for a surprise smasher. Their curve is also too fast for me to SSS anything. At least TRON would make my countersqualls useful. Any suggestions? This might have to be my throw-away match-up.

Overall I am very happy with how faeries has been playing out for me. I am really feeling the difference of having more 1 CMC removal that can take care of undercosted creatures as well as having threats that solve a lot of my original problems against aggro/beatdown decks. Even though I still can’t say I have the greatest plan going up against TRON and Eldrazi, at least the old problems (burn, zoo, affinity, elves, rogue beatdown decks, decks that run pyroclasm/anger of the gods, etc) don’t make me feel forced to mulligan for a SB card or else I lose. Although it’s hilarious to yahenni’s expertise into rest in peace against some decks, I feel protected enough with a harvester or can dig into answers with copter, all while still moving towards a win.

Is anyone else feeling that spell snare might not really be in the meta right now? I haven’t gotten a chance to face the new abzan but most stuff I see is either 1 or 3 CMC from what I’ve been seeing. I don’t have to worry about pyroclasm anymore and fatal push is helping a ton against goyfs, scoozes, and more. I suppose it would help me against cranial plating, but I “feel” that churning out blockers just in case they don’t draw into one is better than holding out a turn just in case they cast one. I haven’t had a situation since aether revolt has been released that made me wish I had spell snare as opposed to anything else.

TL;DR Vehicles are awesome until disproven and I need tips on beating eldrazi the fair way, if that is even doable without goyfs. I have absolutely no idea how this guy did it: http://www.mtgtop8.com/event?e=14629&f=MO

Stores need to make a margin. I dony really mind how dealers buy because what they do is different from players. People purposefully working hard to fuxk each other up though, thats one big part of the mtg.

With Eldrazi Mog if you have White you can board in Worship as they have no real way past it.

Also, sideboard Ceremonious Rejection for Eldrazi and Tron.

Worship would be nice if I wasn’t running bitterblossom. I also have problems navigating the worship. If I mull to get it, then I run the risk of thought knot. If I hope to draw it, I’m already in top deck mode without bitterblossom. I think I would run out of creatures way too quickly just getting to the sideboard. If I was running something with lingering souls I would totally be ok using worship.

I will never side in ceremonious rejection ever again. It is way too narrow. I also run the risk of it being immediately dead against bant eldrazi.

Worship is actually really good with Bitterblossom. It doesn’t stop Bitterblossom killing you but what limited removal they have has zero chance of clearing the board of Faerie tokens. I wouldn’t mull to get it either, Thought-Knot is one of the reasons, overall it’s just not good to give up card advantage vs. decks like that regardless. It is a game changer if you have it though. Maybe focus on Dismember post-board? I imagine you’ve switched to Fatal Pushes main alongside your Paths if you have White. Bring in some Dismembers and go 1 for 1 with them. I recall during the All Eldrazi vs. Counter Eldrazi meta it was popular to use Big Game Hunter and Painter’s Servant so those are both options as well if it’s what’s really holding you back.

Ceremonius Rejection has issues with Cavern but it’s not narrow at all against Eldrazi as they’re all colourless, even the ones with colour have devoid. It hits almost the entire Tron deck as well, including World Breaker and Ulamog which a lot of them run now since the Eye ban stopped them pumping out Emrakul.

pauper

I saw somebody on stream last night playing pauper against an Evincar’s Justice deck:

How dare you insult our lord and saviour UB teachings >=[

Also, the point of that deck isn’t to have fun, it’s to ensure that your opponent is having a completely shitty time. That’s generally how I play fighting games, so I suppose that’s why I like the deck so much =V

I tend to play some form of tempo/control. In Pauper I run that Bant Sureblade/Esper Stormblade Azorius deck with Steel of the Godhead. It’s just hilarious in a format so tame to start swinging for 5 unblockable with lifelink turn 3

Worship is nonbo with BB. I’m going to be using my tokens to prevent the eldrazi from putting me to one, in which case Worship ends up having zero impact. Worship is a lot better when you have difficult to remove things or just need that extra bit of time to race, like if I was running lingering souls or Eldrazi itself. BB is kind of a worse Lingering souls with the main appeal is that it synergizes well with SSS and MB.

Again, ceremonious rejection is bad because it does not impact the game hard enough as a sideboard. Although it’s cool to counter one eldrazi, it does not impact anything that managed to squeeze past. The only time I saw any impact was when I had 4 SB rejections, but then I skimp on other MUs.

In the end, the main answer is to probably wait for less eldrazi to make up the meta. Once combo and aggro start taking over again, then I feel like I’ll be better poised. Once I catch myself thinking of harsh overhauls, that’s when I know it’s time to take a step back (was thinking about cutting discard and putting in AVs and cryptics, but then I open myself up again to combo and aggro again). I’ll probably go back to piloting burn again as it’s the t1 deck that I have. Running 8 instead of 10 fetches loses me on some points for burn, but it’s not as backbreaking as requiring 2 more AVs and cryptics.

On a side note, a buddy of mine is having a blast with Cheeri0s. Makes me happy mainly because he was bummed out about the gitaxian probe ban but all he had to do for Cheeri0s was get the Srams. Deck is pretty hilarious when it goes off and is surprisingly easy to go off on t3.

In pauper I run UG Madness because it cost less than one ticket to build.

I went 5 - 0 at Games Day with Mono-blue, I ended up losing quarter finals of top 8. Still got 2 promos and some packs though.

I beat New Ensoul round 1, a Pia’s Revolution combo deck round 2, Rakdos Aggro, Grixis Control and Golgari Aggro.

I lost to 4 Colour Copycat post-board as he boarded out the Cats and beat me down with Rogue Refiner, Spell Queller and negate/dispel which completely screwed my Engulf the Shore Hulk and Ult Jace strategy.

Next event I’m going to just play Jeskai Control. Half the deck is the same, I’ll just bring in Fumigate, Shock, Harnessed Lightning and Immolating Glare. Side I’ll get Consolate Crackdown and Converge Pyroclasm.

That Pia’s Revolution deck was cool but also a bit janky, basically it used Ravenous Intruder and Foundry Inspector with Implements and Pia’s Revolution to create a draw loop or Burn kill you

Using tokens to prevent Eldrazi putting you to 1 is generally a bad strategy as they can trample, tap down your blockers with Drowner and bounce your tokens to death with Displacer. Believe me, Worship does stop Eldrazi, the deck runs 4 paths, maybe 2 dismembers side.

Rejection is better than 1 for 1 given how most 1 for 1 style removal spells don’t work that way due to TKS, Reality Smasher and Drowner creating tokens plus the way they can flicker to avoid spot removal. It wont put the game away but it hits hard while being relevant vs. Lantern and Tron. Turning any bad matchup into a good one doesn’t happen with a couple of sideboard cards, it’s just a way to board out irrelevant cards for cards for useful ones in most decks. If it’s an all Eldrazi meta then Faeries is a bad call, but if it’s a mixed meta, Rejection isn’t bad given that Faeries as a deck plays reactively anyway.

Less Eldrazi will obviously help Faeries as a meta call. At the same time, the other half of the meta right now is kind of vulnerable to Faeries given there is a lot of Jund, Abzan Combo and Tron right now. Cheeri0s is completely broken. All you need is 1 Puresteel Paladin or Sram opening hand and for them not to have removal and you combo off. I don’t think they’ll ban it but I can see a return of Storm hate cards if it becomes popular.

It’s the last weekend for the Aether Revolt league at my LGS and I’m not really sure on what to cut. This is what I put together after opening a great pack last week, ended up at 33 cards though.

List since picture came out worse than I thought.

Upcoming MTG teasers, new Modern Masters 2017, Amonkhet, and New Full Art Lands.

Lol full art basics again.

All basics should be full art. GTFO with that nonsense.

Art looks sick on those though. Definitely interested in a fat pack or two at reasonable cost

Man, they banned 3 cards in standard, and then ended up with 6 mardu vehicles in top 8 at pro tour. This sucks big time
