Dies to a gun.
Can hear them coming.
Not impressed.
…
Wait, are they protected by the government?
What’s the context for this?
RE infinites, I guess it depends on how easy they are and how egregious. SamShoIV has a lot of infinites and they made some time that you could only do 2 reps of said infinites, but good players know how to avoid a lot of those tricks.
Some games are just not really meant to be played competitively though.

lmfao that whole dumpster fire is the reason we have smash right?

Evo has smash in 2004 or 2005. After that smashers wanted back in but slots were given to actual fighting games. Then Brawl comes out and Keits has a hard on that he can make the smash scene play it with items.
The whole of the smash scene goes “well that’s not what we do”. Whole lot of bitching ensues and Evo is ran with items on. Some kid wins, smash scene bullies the kid because he beat one of the “smash gods” at that time. Everybody in the FGC goes on clowning smash for not being a fighting game.
SFxT comes out in 2012. Capcom tries to do a reality TV show. Aris makes a lot of stupid jokes, they get plastered all over the internet, suddenly the FGC wants to smell harass women. So the next year The cannons have a fundraiser for breast cancer. Game with the most funds raised wins. Smashers raise 90k and get put back on Evo.
And now we’ve had 7 years straight of that bullshit. In those 7 years, there have been more FGC tournaments with Smash in it than smash tournaments with fighting games in them. Now my guess on this is that Smash entered the FGC easily after that (because Evo got flooded with smashers that year and ever since) because TOs wanted the smash money.
That’s also when suddenly everybody was like “Bro don’t make fun of smash, its a fighting game just not a traditional one”. Everybody thought smashers were gonna pick up fighting games but they never did. The year before last Smashers were booing their main event for Evo; the people in grand finals were even sandbagging them. 2019 they’re the last game and their commentators closed it.
So yeah, 2013 and that fundraiser are cursed. why do you have to watch Smash at Evo? Because its very likely that a bunch of people really wanted the smash money. @Missing_Person needs to give deets on how smash infiltrated so easily.

Funny thing about that GF (I was there at evo that year with a grip of FGC homies) the entire place was going nuts for the kid and it’s been the only time smash has even been even remotely entertaining in a tournament setting
I think the same year or the year before it was the year they did the SFIV women’s invitational which was a dumpster fire.
You pretty much nailed all the bullet points about how smash got back in. Politicking, greasing hands and people wanting to keep that paper coming.

Women’s invitational was the tournament that Sherry lost to the bison cosplayer.

wasnt the bison player a transgender woman?
I remember meeting Sherry at evo. Well, sorta. She was hanging out in our room as she was among all the people who were watching Dios X, an old mod here and at the time one of the best MvC3 players in the world play money matches against all the Japanese players.
It was gross how many dudes were all over her, doing whatever she asked and how they were drooling over her. It was like an old Egyptian harem type shit. It was super uncomfortable and off putting so I bounced over to the room next door to play CvS2 with some friends
If it’s the person I’m thinking of I don’t think so.
Eh smash puts asses in the seats. The smash scene is on the whole dumb but they support their game and it’s a game that’s universal in a way few real fighting games are. If you’re a TO and need to fill an event center smash is a good bet just like booking a shitty band that has a lot of fans that will come out is for a booking agent that needs to fill a club. They don’t care what the game is, they just need people there and they want the money because from what I can tell, being a TO is kind of a shit job.
Smash CAN be played like a fighting game and its fun af to play it that way, but that’s not the way smashers play it unfortunately. I have a KoF mode I made on smash Ultimate that’s 300 stamina per fighter, 3 fighter teams, and a 7 min time limit per fight and it’s a lot of fun.

Rose Ball in SFIV is more of a fighting game than smash will ever hope of being.

Everybody always says this bullshit as a way to shit on the FGC.
Look, if all of the FGC played one game, our numbers would be bigger than smash. But thats the thing, it isnt monolythic. FGC supports a bunch of games. People show up, but people are also split up among a million games.

There were stories of a legendary smelly juggalo that would go to Evo. Dude would wear the same outfit all weekend.
FGC is kinda similar to the punk scene in a lot of ways. One part is the “everybody grew up amd got tired of being punk” so a lot of stuff changed because of it.
A lot of people were also hoping ti make this a meal ticket. Boy did that part of it not work out.

I love Stamina mode and so far the closest you can get to legit traditional fighting game. I admit I did call Smash a hybrid fighter…but backed down once the crater himself said Smash isn’t a fighter. After that I had no leg to stand on.
I enjoyed playing the game with friends and some family…but I’d never dare introduce them into the scene because they never hold each other accountable for their more garbage players with poor attitudes.
When the FGC was about diversity before diversity was even a thing to promote. I miss going after college classes to hit up the local arcades and play for a bit. I really wanted to see the scene grow to the levels fortnite did…but after seeing how things have turned out, maybes it’s best it didn’t.

Cool. Only EVO I ever went to were 2006 and 2008. Played CVS2 in the same room DSP was in I believe for 2006. Before that I was playing as World Warrior Honda versus various people on an HSF2 setup. Believe that same setup had NKI VS CaliPower.
I think you’re thinking Kayo Police or something.
This is the cosplayer I believe:

I don’t mean just in terms of numbers, I mean in terms of just showing up. If the NRS scene had that kind of energy their games would be a lot healthier than they are.
They have a scene for multiple smash games too, so it isn’t like everyone is playing the same game when they have Melee, Brawl, Ultimate and whatever else they do.
Can’t believr I’m defending these people.
If you have Ryu vs Ken in stamina mode at Suzaku castle how is that much different from any street fighter game? The way smashers play it, it’s not a fighting game but I’m saying it can be made to be akin to one if you tune it right, not that it IS one per se.
Smash is lame as all fuck and its not a fighting game. Im sad that that shit is at fighting game tournies, the big ones. FGC is lame now and Im sad that I was ever part of it.
