What he was saying makes sense. I mean, the whole time I was thinking “why are they going to do this? They’re just going to end up doing the same thing in 30 years again… Unless something changes.” That change could be the island not being there of course…
The fact that they DID the same thing in 30 years only PROVES that it has to happen the same way otherwise they can’t be there, meaning that they can’t do the things they did to get there in the first place. It’s causality.

Dan said that they are currently in their present and it’s possible for them to die. But if any of them die how could they crash on the island in the first place? Can effect ever precede cause? Are they (jack and crew) really variables?
The plane crash has already occurred for them, so if they die it’s no matter. Now, if their child selves die, on the other hand, that would be a problem.
