Well, I always thought about it this way–there’s a certain end result that is destined to occur, and that end result isn’t going to change. They kind of explained this with the whole Desmond saving Charlie’s life multiple times arc. Now, it seemed like Charlie was destined to die, because no matter how many times Desmond saved Charlie’s life, Charlie always got himself into another life-ending situation.
Since Desmond knew what was going to happen and he used that knowledge to save Charlie’s life, you might think that he was changing the future. But the Universe kept trying to auto-correct Desmond’s actions by trying to kill Charlie again. In that sense, it seems like you can’t change the future, because the Universe will auto-correct to compensate for whatever you do.
Although you CAN change how you reach that end result (i.e. Charlie died at the underground water station instead of the bolt of lightning or getting caught in a riptide), the end result still seems to be the same.

I don’t really understand this about the whole “not being able to change the path of the future in the past bullshit”. Obviously keeping Charlie alive for that long HAD to make some sort of impact about being able to reach Penny in the last couple of seasons. I mean if it wasn’t him then it could have been Desmond inside that tank and he would have been the one that drowned.
All in all I’m extremely disappointed now that the fucking white-haired lady is in the picture now. I thought she was going to be some sort of delusion/hallucination thing for Desmond but now the bitch is real and using all these cosmic mumbo jumbo saying that the world will end of shit doesn’t go their way? When the hell did this turn into Heroes?

i love this show, because its always opening 4 doors for every door it closes. Like now im thinking; from ethan or alperts perspective locke is vanishing when he time skips right. kinda the way alot of ‘spirit’ characters appear and disappear like christian shepard, or most of the others. shit to keep the mind thinking. looks like farraday is going to try and change the past by fucking with the time wheel during the orchids creation. neat stuff. i love this show.

The whole time travel thing is simple. You usually can’t change shit because if things didn’t go similar to how they originally went then you wouldn’t have been able to go back into the past to begin with.
Desmond might be considered special because he actually found his constant from his previous visions/reliving of the past with his future mind he found his constant. That and Desmond also met Faraday with his future self before which could explain how it came to him as dream/memory later.
