I don’t have issue with dissenting opinions. I do take issue with people tossing around terms incorrectly. It muddies the debate. You can’t be a Mary Sue in a fighting game while defeating no one of note. Pummeling C Tier fighters and dolls with the least fighting capability doesn’t make you a Mary Sue. The argument is over her importance to the plot. You can’t hold up a globe, call it a cube, and expect to be taken seriously.

I agree, Chun Guile and Cammy aren’t the only ones who have quarrels with Shadaloo. But you failed to make a single point as to why that justifies Karin in particular to lead the fight against Shadaloo. She hardly has any business with Shadaloo prior to SFV, especially compared to people such as Nash, Chun, Cammy, and Guile who’s entire story their entire existence has been about Shadaloo. There’s my rebuttal.

I always thought that if a doll were to die it would be Decapre, it made most sense to me for her to sacrifice herself to save the day. However, Marz was a pleasant surprise. What a woman. <3
Rashid swiped the piece she had on her after their fight. Yes, Karin indeed got slighted. The characters she tramples are three NPCs and two jobbers. Rashid’s only wins was against an injured Chun and FANG. FANG won against nobody. That’s who Karin beat. You make it sound like she handed Bison his ass.

Actually, Karin’s dad and family were involved in some bad blood with Shadaloo back in the day IIRC. There was also a Black Moon over Japan.

Actually didn’t know that. But there’s still clearly less emphasis on Shadaloo for her in alpha 3 then there is for Chun Cammy and Guile in, oh, just every other game they’ve ever appeared in.
Yeap. That’s the exact definition of a Mary Sue: A character that pops out of nowhere, gets for no reason into a plot it wasn’t supposed to belong to, does everything perfectly and eclipses other characters’ roles or importance.
That scene when Chun-Li is about to fight dolls and Karin gets in the middle, stealing her fight, was sort of infuriating. Is Karin the one that decides who is going to fight who? I get she just tried to gain time for Chun-Li and Guile and the others to get in the real important fight but I still felt like I wanted to punch her in the face in that moment.
In the end, the only thing Chun-Li did was defeating F.A.N.G (yeah, “defeat” him for the seventh time or so, that guy F.A.N.G simply won’t give up), she didn’t even fight Bison. But I digress, that wasn’t Karin’s fault.
I simply think the writers did some blunder and I don’t think they wanted to make her “a shining star” or anything, they just overstimated Karin a little or used her as a plot device. Karin falls more into the plot device category but they used her for everything, including her “contacts” as she made friends with Karin, Mika, Laura, Birdie, etcetera. I think it has more to do with lazy/reckless writing than anything.

A character like Karin, who got the lowest stamina in the game as well as poor stun, can’t be the strongest girl in the story. It makes no sense at all.
The non sense feeling about her kicking FANG’s ass is exactly the same as Cassie Cage beating Shinnok in MKX.
Poor Marz, I wanted to give her a hug ;_;7
I really hope for an eventual eiploge or something when more seasons are done because as beautiful as that moment with all the heroes reuniting joyfully and tearfully, I greedily wanted to see more and maybe a cameo where it fades to the next day, it’s a cover of a newspaper saying “SHADALOO HAS FALLEN” and Haggar is smiling while a few characters are talking to him about restoration efforts and how he 'd love to have kicked Bison around but he was helping with relief efforts and trying to calm the city down since violence had returned as Alex stated.
HOLY CRAP GUYS! I’ve got a great way for an intermediary story upgrade! Things didn’t get rest to normal, what if in the following months of restoration gang violence picks up kinda like in the days after the battle of New York for MCU? What if Mad Gear or another whole new group rears it’s ugly head and they’re tied to a med sized organization thus you get some final fight heroes, Alex and others leading Season 2, story A!
One thing again that bothers me about Chun is why she needed to be saved by Ryu while helping Li Fen. I was hoping for them all to exit the base as equals, I think that was the last bit of souring for me. It wasn’t terrible, but combined with all the weird excuses they did to stop Chun from fighting it makes it more irritating than if she had kicked all kinds of ShadaBooty and was just exhausted. She beat the utter crap outta Fang without injury so I don’t know why she could barley keep up with Guile and Ryu.

Please. The way she had him pinned begging for Mercy, and you’re gonna tell me she wasn’t portrayed as “OHOHOHO I’m beat everyone with ease!” in that scene? Not to mention that scene where Mika and Ibuki are both clearly terrified of her. I’m sorry if I sound rude; I truly don’t mean to be. But she’s literally perfect and doesn’t lose or even tie a single time and it’s infuriating.

My overall feelings about the story mode after much thought.
Spoiler
The bad
The lack of interactions between Charlie and Guile. Guile thought his best friend was dead, if he finds out he’s alive in some capacity wouldn’t he want to catch up more? I’m not saying they had to kiss, but my god could they’ve at least had more scenes together.
- Bad use of auxiliary characters. Sorry to all the KARIN, Mika,Gief, ibuki, birdie etc fans, they had too much screen time. I do think they should make cameos but they overstayed their welcome and took time away from characters that facilitate the plot more.
*KARIN. My god they should have called this Karin’s story mode. I understand she was an important factor in bring the hero’s together, but her role should have not gone beyond being an HQ rendezvous point. Also I would have liked to have seen a bit more planning when they intercept Shadaloo. The plan just seemed to be, to storm the base haphazardly only to run off back to HQ when it indubitably failed.
*The handling of new characters particular F.A.N.G and Necalli. I know a lot of you loved Fangs portrayal in story mode, hell I do as well, but I felt they did an injustice to the character. I feel there was a lack of underlying character motivation. We know F.A.N.G is insane, but why? You can’t have a character that looks and acts the way he does without an explanation to his madness. His prologue did a better job at explaining certain facets of his character, but It would have been nice to get into his head more. I don’t like the idea that Fang is just evil for the sake of being evil when his prologue begs to differ. Rashid says “you’re just plain evil” which is understandable. I personally think Rashid went too easy on the dude. If he killed my friend I would have cut his head off and shit down his throat lol. But all jokes aside they could have made a very complex villain with underlying issues of his own to accompany his evil. Fang abuses the dolls and treats them like weapons. Fang was abused as a child and treated like a weapon, all he know’s is killing, can a character like that be blamed for his ways? Also “killing him off” was stupid, Is that it? Really? What a waste of such a good villain.
In regards to F.A.N.G’s fate. Why have Marz knock F.A.N.G off the ledge, only to have him come back get beat up by Chun li ,then have him presumably die in an explosion? It makes no sense to me, you might as well gave Marz or Rashid the victory to avenge their friends. Chun li really didn’t have to be the one to fight F.A.N.G which leads me to believe he’s not actually dead. I hope for Capcom’s sake he’s not becasue that’s some Bullshiet!
Necalli on the other hand suffers from no real reason to exist in the story. He doesn’t successfully absorb anyone. He’s just this non factor which is terrible especially for a character that looked to be more relevant to the overlying plot.
- Shadaloo 4 kings. We should have got more interactions between them. I like the little scene we get of the king at the bank you can tell the new guy is really annoying them but beyond that we get nothing. This is the downfall of shadaloo for christ sake and that’s it? I would have loved to see Vega and Balrog ranting about how much they hate Fang or how much Bison has gone out of control. maybe plotting a coup. Also where was Sagat in all this, not even a mention? F.A.N.G joined the organization around the time Sagat was still there so what happened? Just so many missed opportunities.
*Too much fighting. I know it’ the story mode of a fighting game, but I feel like the story mode would have been better off with more actual meaningful character interactions rather than characters punching each other in the face. We need more backstory, more character development especially for new characters like Fang and Necalli who we may never see again in the franchise.
*Lack of Urien and Illuminati. Like seriously they really did very little in the plot.
*Chun li. Yea they fucked her up in this.
*Bison’s demise was so anticlimactic. He should have went out in a blaze of glory. The battle should have been intense but no. One little butterfly punch does the job.
The Good.
- I like what they did with Nash being this tragic hero who despite everything could not destroy his demon(Bison.) I enjoyed that, it made me really feel for the character a lot.
*Cammy and the dolls. The entire thing with Cammy and her sisters was great I hope we get an update on them in the future.
*Rashid’s story really gave me feels. I think the fact that we didn’t get to know his friend directly made it worst. I felt it made the audience feel like Rashid in that moment, Knowing you have a friend that needed you but never getting to see that friend again. It really had me choking up for a second.
and Laura and Sean’s interaction was really cute.
Overall a 5/10 for me, it’s a Meh. Hopefully we get a new season story or maybe the udon comics will pad out some of the missing character development but I really think they should have held off on destroying shadaloo

Isn’t she supposed to be way faster than them LOL. And I don’t just mean gameplay-wise; their win quotes against her in some of the other games sure seem to imply so.

Like @Cestus said, she’s the money. Her role is to provide the heroes with what they need. A black moon is hovering over her country and happened to destroy her satellite when it went off. She doesn’t need a personal grudge against Shadoloo to act against them. The presence of the black moons put major cities at jeopardy and took action. Rashid is essentially the same. He just wanted his friend back and be on his marry way.

No it isn’t. What you described is among the lines of a Deus Ex Machina which Karin definitely is not. That’s what Ingrid is.

In terms of SF5’s story future, we’ve seen how prologues can take place before or after the cinematic story. I’m sure any future character prologues will likely take place after the cinematic story.
We could also get a shorter cinematic story in 2 years time like the Juri OVA. Juri OVA was about half the length of TTTB which was the equivalent of A Shadow Falls. So maybe we’ll get something short and sweet that introduces someone new, tie loose ends, or fill the time period between the end of SF5 and SF3 (which should be around 130 days if Gill wants to adhere to the prophecy verbatim).

Hawkingbird:
Karin is a shitty fanfic character made canon. She’s an author pet that isn’t allowed to lose or be slighted ever, even if keeping that rule tramples over and diminishes existing characters. No one in-universe questions this logic. Karin can be forcefully inserted into matters that she isn’t particularly tied to and solve it better than the actual protagonists without breaking a sweat.
Maybe Mary Sue isn’t the correct word, and I admit that. If a better description comes up, I’ll gladly use that.
Rashid already had those two pieces, they’re the one from Chun and the one Nash took from Guile. He ran off because he couldn’t get another one from her. And beating FANG is a bigger deal than you’re saying it is. He’s one of the Four Kings damn it, he’s not some random mook.
And WHO she beat wasn’t my main point originally. All her battles (wins more battles than anyone else) are constructed to make her look perfect when Chun and Guile are out there losing most of their matches. The actual protagonists are thrown to the wayside in order to elevate Karin. It’s a load of crap that spoiled decades of anticipation to see Chun and Guile deal a fatal blow to Shadowloo.

Yes. Rashid got the best of her when he swiped her piece after he escaped from her armbar when she let her guard down. Mika and Ibuki scene happened after Karin defeated two dolls and two Shadoloo mooks. Both of them have fought Karin before at that.
Marz’ fate makes me legit sad.
Goddammit Capcom, you made me care about one of the Dolls.
