My full thoughts on the story
[details=Spoiler]The Good
Bison-This was an excellent portrayal. He was really badass and felt truly menacing. This is one thing Capcom got 100% right
Inclusion- I felt you could’ve cut a lot of characters from the story, but I liked that Capcom included as many people as they could. It was nice to get spotlight on characters who normally get the shaft all the time. Zangief, the Dolls, Dhalsim etc were all portrayed very well and it was very welcome to see so many obscure characters finally get their due.
Ryu- I know some disliked his place it the story but I think he’s also a character Capcom did a good job juggling. He was in the story just enough, and quite frankly it fit cause he doesn’t have much to do with Bison or Shadaloo anyway. Capcom got it right by lessening his involvement but still making him just relevant enough. It was story appropriate.
Stages- They all looked cool as hell
FANG- Great villain.
Rashid- A really well developed character. His story had a surprising amount of pathos. Capcom knocked it out of the park with him. A really well written arc.
Neutral
Story- I still can’t make up my mind about it. I think it got more right then wrong(but what it got wrong was really egregious) but it was cohesive enough I think. Still, I appreciate the effort and the time Capcom took to do this.
Necalli- I don’t know what happened here. I don’t much care for the character so I don’t have any strong feelings one way or the other, but his inclusion here just doesn’t amount to much of anything. He seems like just a plot device to get Ryu to be stronger so he can beat Bison, which is a sound enough reason for him to be here I suppose, but he still stands out as somewhat superfluous. Not a compete disaster but this aspect of the story could’ve been tightened up.
Juri- I’m actually really confused about her. Her interactions with Cammy and the Dolls don’t make much sense based on what e know about her from SF4. I get she wants to kill Bison, but why is she semi chummy with Cammy and the dolls who she wants to kill? Why the hell did cammy just jump on a motorcycle with her? These motivations just don’t make sense.
Vega- Same thing. He seems kinda all over the place. Obsessed with Cammy for some reason and his motives are too muddy for me.
The Bad
Karin- Sorry, her taking over the Shadaloo story is wrong on every level. This was Guile and Chun’s story and they play no significant part in it at all. Her being thel eader was a joke of the highest order.
History- Too many lost opportunities between Nash and Guile. This could’ve been a gold mine. The epilogue with Ken and Ryu was poignant. But these two characters get nothing. And I’m stil unclear if Nash’s sacrifice even did anything.
Chun Li- She’s officially a joke now. Starting with SFIV Capcom has totally humiliated the character down to Dan tier. Gets beat by Viper. Gets beat bu Juri. Has to be rescued by Guile and Abel in SSF4. Acquired the SIN data that accomplished nothing. Gets beat by Vega in her prologue, beat by Bison, beat by Rashid, stripped of any kind of story leader authority by Karin, beats a FANG who fell 20 stories but still is ok after his beatdown, has to be rescued by Ryu, and has no role at all in taking down Shadaloo.
I laughed when literally three other characters stepped in to take over fights she was about to start. It became a running joke. I don’t know if anyone has stopped to realize it, but Chun literally has NO story accomplishments at all anymore. She literally has done nothing in the story line anymore. She’s a weak fighter who now can’t and hasn’t accomplished ANYTHING. Sad.[/details]
