Exactly, and the only reason why Bison and all the characters were repetitive in nature is because they had to revitalize the series from after not having a new iteration in a decade. That’s why all the characters seem stuck in their ways with no progression. We’re past that stage now in SFV, and it show’s with the new liberties the designers have taken with the redesigns. Hopefully that too will carry over to the story aspect of the game as well.
I actually think there’s one good reason for Hugo taking after Andore instead of Abigail; Andore was modeled after the iconic Andre the Giant. Being that Street Fighter has its share of characters based on famous real life fighters (Mike and Balrog are both modeled after Mike Tyson, Fei Long after Bruce Lee), the Andore design would fit in a bit better with the cast of Street Fighters. Even though Abigail is just a head and color swap of the Andore’s, and he already has the connotation of being a wrestler with his face paint. Ultimately his design just isn’t as timeless as the Andore’s are, because they are based on a real life person.
To add to this, the characters feel repetitive and stuck mostly to just us older folk who know them well enough after decades. The younger generation (Read: Capcom’s target audience) did not experience these characters, they never experienced Shadaloo or Bison’s villainy in all its glory for example - Bison has never been a boss to them in their lives. SF5 is the first numbered entry that is really and fully progressing and moving us forward. I’m very optimistic about the story this time around.
Well yea. To make another Star Wars analogy, I feel like what you mentioned is the partial approach they have taken with the new trilogy.
The younger generation knows all about “The Force”, and Anakin prequel stuff. They really haven’t experienced why the Empire, and not necessarily the Dark Side were the main antagonists of the original movie. The climax of New Hope didn’t rest on the whims of a lightsaber bout, but in a dogfight above the Death Star. Darth Vader had to answer to the the established Grand Moff, and not the Emperor.
Similarly, the younger gen of SF knows about the SnH, Evil Ryu, and Akuma being a threat, but M. Bison has kinda taken a backseat from the forefront to all of that. Where originally he and Shadaloo were analogous to the Empire from Star Wars. SFV needs to be “The Psycho Powers Awakens” for Bison, so to speak.
One thing I’m hoping for in the Story Mode is the opportunity to change the outcome of a story by performing a certain action.
This made me remember when I was playing the Story Mode of Project Justice with the Taiyo team and losing a battle with Batsu. After that lost, he felt so awful that he left the team to secretly train. You had to proceed through the story with Kyosuke and Hinata alone for a bit. However, when Batsu returned, it was in a new powered-up form named Burning Batsu. I always thought that was pretty cool, since I had no idea losing that specific battle would change the story that much.
So while a straightforward story would be more than welcome, I’m really hoping we have different outcomes that can be changed depending on the players actions. Could be by winning with a perfect, finishing with a Critical Art, losing, etc. I think content like that would keep Story Mode from being a one in done type of mode for most.
I think that Story Mode isn’t gonna be one and done, like most story modes in fighting games. It may have been a rumor, but I think Ono mentioned that he would like story mode to be updated throughout the season. What this could mean is that every season, every wave of new characters could add additional chapters to the story. Or it could just add a piece of the puzzle to the ultimate end-plot. At worst, it tells the same plot from different chracters points of view. So i’m pretty confident that Story mode isn’t gonna be one and done. And that casual players and single-player enthusiasts will return to this mode throughout the year.
I do like your idea about changing the outcome of a story throughout our actions, or even thr outcomes of fights. I think it’s too complicated for Capcom to do at this stage. But It would be quite a task to see every possible ending. Some might be bored because you would have to play the same story over and over again, but I love it when it’s fresh.
I honestly prefer an outcome with some indisputable finality to it (Although arguing is fun!). One ending from different and layered points of view is fine, but none of those contradicting endings from the 90s. Maybe have peripheral stuff happen in story mode, like fights that can only be unlocked if certain criteria are met and they reveal new pieces of the puzzle or maybe even have their own chapter that is unrelated to the main arc. For example, a hidden flash back sequence of events/fights that give us back story but do not necessarily change the outcome of THE ending.
But what if they go super postmodern and you end up fighting foucault on top of a skyscraper as he yells ALL… INTERPRETATIONS… ARE ACTS… OF POWER while punching you in the face?
I think it would be cool that if you lost with Ryu during storymode that he would go into secret training allowing you to acquire the “Hot Ryu” alt.
The reinvigorated “Hot Ryu” would proceed to rise from the depths of his defeat ready stomp new assholes into anything that stood in his way. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTDy8XVdRSk
Right. That’s exactly what I’m getting at. Hidden chapters and certain battles that wouldn’t take place by *normal *advancement would be good enough. Like you, I want the story to be told with some clarity for once. So overall, the conclusion would remain static, but things leading up to it could differ depending on what happens.
There’s so many cool possibilities with the Street Fighter world.
Michael, I definitely remember Ono saying the DLC characters will expand the story. I’m really glad they’re going to have an impact on the story.
Speaking of Illuminati’s influence on the events that may occur in SF5, depending on how they approach the game from the storytelling point of view, it very well may have triggered the entire plotline for it to come to life.
The fact that Necalli is out there, Charlie’s back in action, Bison is back on the scene yet again, and Urien will be making an appearance in this game’s roster all point to this
Heck, I might go as far as to say that the Illuminati actually woke Necalli from his slumber within the Waterfall stage’s temple (I mean, it definitely looks like a temple, a shrine of some sorts even, and Necalli’s speech style makes me think he knew how to talk but the deep slumber that was somehow caused originally just made him forget everything, like some sort of Amnesia + Comatose state combo
It also plays well into Illuminati’s plan because Necalli is on the hunt for the powerful souls, many of our heroes (and villains) possess, Bison is on the search for a new replacement body since Ryu is no longer useful to him after Gouken had sealed Satsui no Hado within Ryu, which means that naturally Bison and Necalli WILL meet each other at some point in the story, eventually destroying either each other (Necalli consuming Bion and becoming the SSJ version permanently, or Bison consuming Necalli’s powers or his body, resulting in a new Final/Shin Bison), and a conflict of this magnitude will pretty much drag everybody else from the cast into what will become one of the biggest battles the Street Fighter universe has known
Like, it’s all just blends perfectly:
Ryu will be fighting Bison and/or Necalli
Ken, Cammy, Chun-Li, Guile (later) will join forces with Ryu, as seen in the Viper Aftermath trailer
Later, possibly Dhalsim, Zangief, R. Mika, Karin and Birdie will also join our heroes, as they somehow get involved in the upcoming battle. Dhalsim will try to preserve the balance, Mika will follow Zangief, Birdie will follow Chun and go against Shadaloo completely, Zangief might go just because he’s a hero to his nation and it would be a huge missed opportunity for him not to do a heroic deed of fighting evil in form of Bison and Necalli
Vega and FANG, along with Balrog (later) will follow Bison as the part of Shadaloo, but eventually one or more of them will simly betray Bison, since FANG is kinda fucked up, Vega just doesn’t give a shit and his loyalty to Bison seems to be temporary as of his SF4’s ending and SF5’s winquote, and Balrog will just do shit for the highest bidder, being the thug he is
Charlie will intervene to have his revenge on Bison, just as our hero team sees him fighting against the boss of Shadaloo and the cause of Charlie’s transformation, possible plot twist and change of allegiance might follow
And while ALL of this shit is happening, Urien, Gill, Kolin, and whoever the fuck is the member of the Illuminati (who knows, we might get a new Illuminati member in 2017!) are simply watching as the heroes and the villains slowly slaughter each other, eliminating certain threats from the scene, essentially allowing them to step out of the shadows and begin their operations, with Gill as the leader, which will slowly flow into the New Generation’s story arc as we get to see Alex for the first time since like 2008 or whenever TvC was released
That’s exactly what I think is going to happen. You fight Necalli or Bison first then the other intervenes after the fight (either Necalli consumes Bison or Bison possesses Necalli) and it results in Shin Bison coming back. I just hope that he is a proper character in the same way Oni was to Akuma.
Yea. The whole point of those posts was to point that out. It was also to address that the original Hugo character wasn’t intended to look like or be an Andore at all. This was the basis for a needless argument a while back, just like the argument for Charlie Nash.

*First concept sketch translates to “Original Hugo”[/details]
I know I’m super late to replying to this, but apparently there was an unused “Z” subtitle that would’ve been placed behind the II for Super Street Fighter II Turbo. It would’ve been similar to the “X” used in the Japanese version “Super Street Fighter 2 X GMC”.
So you would’ve had something like this.
The ultimate fusion, Dragon Ball Z and Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo!
Super Street Fighter II Z Turbo!!!
Is it me or is Karin a lot less condescending towards the rest of the cast this time? She seems to admire several of other fighter’s styles and techniques.
Haha it’s funny CvS2 and DBZ were just brought up. The CvS2 style end boss is what I’ve been saying for a while what I would like to happen and still think it’s a possibility, but over the life of SFV as the story evolves and we get new possible boss fights, I would like it to sort of follow the DBZ timeline. So: Saiyan Saga (what seems to be the ultimate evil, the ones all the heroes are planning for, faces them in a final battle aka Bicalli/Necison) -> Frieza Saga (the true top dog is revealed, faces the now stronger heroes aka Illuminati unleashed) -> Cell Saga (an old-fashioned back to basics tournament like what everything was founded on occurs pitting the top world warriors against each other aka maybe rise of Akuma/Gill? Gill might make more sense for Cell parallel with RESURRECTION). But I don’t want to get my hopes up.
