Yup. In-media events trump announcements unless the announcement is a retcon of the previous in-media event.
If George Lucas did an interview post-ESB and stated “Originally in Episode IV, Vader wasn’t Luke’s father…but now he is” that would not mean that, at that moment, Vader became Luke’s father and anything previous was conjecture. In fact, Vader canonically became Luke’s father when it was stated in-media that he was Luke’s father (ESB). This is the same as showing Charlie Nash as Charlie Nash’s name in SF4. That happened. It created the canonical, in-media instance of Charlie Nash being his name. Full stop. Nothing invalidated this after the fact and nothing challenged it. It did not even invalidate anything previous as Charlie could have always been his first name with Nash always being his last (right, wrong or indifferent) so it’s a very soft retcon.
There’s also a HUGE mistake of context being made…
This interview is for Japanese audiences. It is relevant to tell the Japanese SF fans that NOW Nash is going by “Charlie Nash” since he has previously been Nash in all game appearances in SF. There is NO precedent for him being Charlie Nash save for the instance of it becoming canonical in SF4, something easily overlooked by casual and hardcore fans alike.
This is merely acknowledging something that was slipped into SF4 (a retcon that was always logical) and fully introducing it to the Japanese audience via the interview. Nothing more.
It’s not even a major deal. Most of us had accepted Charlie Nash as his name anyways and, guess what? It still is Charlie Nash. The only person with skin to lose in this situation is vas who actively dislikes Charlie Nash’s name being “Charlie Nash”…for some reason.
Just like he dislikes Gouken & Gen being alive in SF4…but, guess what, they are. It’s all the same.
TOTALLY IRRELEVANT! …until I get my canonical Juli/Juni/Juri yuri! Make it happen, Capcom! Take a huge step and create the first lesbian poly-amorous couple in mainstream gaming! Do it!
Well, we already know FANG has pissed off Rashid. Now for some crackpot theories!
-Cammy wants him because he’s experimenting on the Dolls, which partially explains the redesign we saw in some promo materials
-He seems Chinese, and may have something to do with Chun-Li and/or her father
-Nash understandably wants his head for his involvement with Shadowloo
-Vega doesn’t like being below such an ugly person
-It’d be awesome if he perfected a brainwashing technique that gives them their personality rather than making them robotic. It would make Cammy’s situation even more tragic now since they’re displaying humanity while being even FURTHER from freedom.
-He ground up Chun-Li’s dad with a mortar and pestle to make his poison! He’s a really skinny ogre!
Another good Star Wars analogy is how Princess Leia and Luke weren’t supposed to siblings up until RotJ. Lucas was clearly building a love triangle between her, Luke, and Han, going as far as to have the infamous Luke and Leia kissing scene in ESB.
They even back pedaled the whole love triangle idea once the sibling aspect was introduced in RotJ
Something I thought about when going over Vasili’s old quotes, was that SF3 Hugo wasn’t originally intended to be Hugo at all. Designers were originally going to make a brand new German character for SF3 to rival Alex. They were supposed to keep the theme of a “New Generation” of fighters, but that changed with Hugo.
They would’ve made the new character a giant to surpass Alex’s body build, but he would’ve been a teenager like the newcomers. They scrapped the idea in favor of an already familiar design for a giant character pulled from another Capcom franchise. They pulled Andore’s design from Final Fight, renamed him Hugo, and gave him the background and backstory they were originally going to use for the new giant German character. That’s why Andore’s and Hugo’s backstories don’t match up, Hugo wasn’t always intended to be modeled after Andore. When he was, his backstory bio didn’t reflect the change. That’s why there are unfinished Hugo sprites in New Generation, even when he isn’t a part of the New Generation, or a traditional returnee like Ryu or Ken.
It’s also probably why Hugo’s personality is that of a man child, and why he collects assortment of toys in his room from 3rd Strike. Hugo was originally a giant German boy, before taking Andore’s likeness.
Going to give my two cents on the Charlie Nash issue and hopefully not argue much more about it, as Eternal suggests.
Now that Charlie is playable in SF5, Nakayama mentions that his name is changed in SF5… as opposed to his name in SFA3 and other old games where he appeared. Charlie was not in SF4, so his name change becomes relevant now; it’s new and worth mentioning now, in SF5. What I’m saying is, Nakyama’s statement doesn’t mean that they made the name change just now. I have no doubts that Capcom intended to call him Charlie Nash by the time of SF4, and heck, the name Charlie Nash does appear ingame in SF4.
I respect Vasili’s stubbornness to admit it as canon until now, but it was pretty obvious that Nash was intended to be Charlie Nash already in SF4 when we saw the dogtags ingame and major licensed media such as the comics and movie called him that way. Didn’t want to call it canon until a more clear instance? That’s fine, but it did deserve a mention in the guide. Everybody knew he was Charlie Nash and the guide failed to give this a single line.
I don’t know about being a lesbian but Juri always struck me as a pansexual. She is into whatever feels good/fucks anything with a pulse.
We really don’t, but if you insist, I submit Rufus as SS-tier, followed by Honda. Twelve being a shapeshifter means he could hypothetically have the biggest bust of all if it suited his mission. Lastly, Q. We don’t know what’s hiding under there. SSS-tier confirmed?
My guesses are:
-Involved with Rashid’s friend
-Attempts to assassinate Bison
-Related in some way to Chun-li’s Father
He’s also the self-proclaimed #2, not the actual #2. So Vega is subordinate to Bison only in reality.
Yeah, I kind of just figured Juri was like the whole “crazy depraved bisexual” type. Along with well, the bit on getting off on fighting, so whatever that’s called.
Since SF becomes 30 years old in 2017, do any of you think we’ll see any major events story-wise in V? I can’t help but imagine the ultimate fight between Ryu and Akuma (and Akuma finally meeting his demise as he’s always wanted but with Ryu also succumbing due to using all of his ki to defeat him).
I know it sounds crazy but all paths must eventually end.
From what I remember, early on when she was first revealed and brought to the public eye, Capcom mentioned that she* really* liked breasts, but that disappeared later into the game’s life cycle. In general with her all her comments dripping with flirts and sexuality to either gender, I think the designers may have intended her to be bisexual, either way, future appearances may shed more light.
About all the Charlie Nash debate (by the legendary sonic boom! We’re* still* debating this?!) as @YagamiFire said, the key thing is this is announcing the change over for Japanese audiences who just knew him as Nash or the longest time. I really don’t get why since SF4 where we SAW his full name on the dogtags, we heard (and cringed) that he was called that in Legend of Chun Li and even in the Udon books. Maybe I’m biased since I read ton of American comics and they’re retcon heavy, but some things are changed by the powers that be randomly- for good or bad and I easily accepted it. Heck, when I was a kid, back in the 90s, I thought his name was officially Charlie Nash. They combined it, nothing major. Finito, the end. Let’s put this to bed and let it stay deader than Go Hibiki.
This. That would be terrible. The reason I liked the brain washing in the Avengers movie is it didn’t make them “obviously teh evils shuffling robits” but rather had them acting naturally, but with their souls twisted to Loki’s will. That to me is more horrific that being robotic, because, imagine you’re Cammy, how can you even break through, how can you even tell that they haven’t just gone mad and accepted this way of life? They’re able to walk around do what they THINK they want to do, so there’s nothing letting them say “wait…no…that’s not right…I don’t like X…something wrong…what am I doing?”
My guess is that the only “major” event that’s gonna happen in regards to the SF storyline line would be the collapse of Shadaloo. I’m not 100% sure where and when SFV is gonna take place. I read months ago that the game was set to occurr after IV but before SFIII. If that’s the case, I do know that Chun-Li supposedly ended the Shadaloo organization before the 3rd Strike game (according to Urien before Chun-Li fights him). So therefore, the only major event that I see taking place would be the fall of Shadaloo.
It’s kind of a bold prediction. Shadaloo has always been a huge antagonist for the game (along with the Illuminati). But as all powerful M. Bison is, Vega continues to grow more distrusting. F.A.N.G. just seems too outrageous to maintain stability in the organization, even if he is Shadaloo’s number 2.
That’s my thought.
I agree to some extent, but as Daemos already said in an earlier post, Bison is pretty much evil incarnated and since evil can’t be eradicated Shadaloo’s fall may only be temporary.
It would be exciting if, as Daemos said, Bison disappeared for awhile and returned in a later game. I think it could be cool to finally close the chapter on Shadaloo but have a new force appear for a while and when Bison returns he’d be doing things differently, either by himself, or with a new organization with a whole new mindset and approach to villainy.
I think a legitimate way to get rid of Bison for several games is basically to destroy Shadaloo completely, and assume to destroy all possible human incubators (and all the scientists/facilities) behind it that could make bodies. Bison will then find solace in the boy in Boxer’s ending. But since that kid is so young, Bison will work behind the scenes plotting his comeback or some shit like that. It will basically remove him from the spotlight for as many games as needed.
An alternative that was also proposed on these boards is have Necalli consume him, but leave it open ended not knowing if it was Necalli who consumed or Bison who possessed.
Idk…last time Bison disappeared we got SF3, only for him to return in a later game which ends up being a prequel of the predecessor. Then the new organization he does show up with turns out to be S.I.N. In essence this already occurred, it was just handled horribly imo.
Do you guys think (with Urien and Alex returning, that the plot could feature some kind of war between Shadaloo and the Illuminati? I think it would be something new, instead of having a “good v. evil” battle, you get two different antagonists fighting each other, with the good guys trying to find a way to make sure that their conflict doesn’t hurt any innocent people.
I don’t think that we should be gun shy just because of SF3. I love Bison, and would hate for things to get too repetitive and run him into the ground. It’s a new era and SF is trying to do new things. A new direction could really do wonders for the series instead of Shadaloo vs everyone part XXVII. I personally think a little bit of risk could be fun.
Well a long time ago when SF3 was first released, Capcom made it a point that the Illuminati worked behind the scenes to influence Shadaloo’s fall (among other global events). I don’t think we will see an all out war between the two. If they really have a hand in Shadaloo’s fall and Bison was not aware of this, THEN will see an all out war between Bison and the Illuminati (SF6 taking place after 3S). A more pertinent question to me is what possible interest or benefit does the Illuminati have in destroying Shadaloo?
So far my best guess is technology. Urien’s G-Project requires as a basis technology from Shadaloo who have spent many years perfecting genetic engineering and human cloning. In the Charlie comic, they are interested in harnessing Bison’s Psycho Power (which doesn’t make sense to me for the official timeline when you consider the events that will follow SFV).
There are several possible scenarios also.
Boxer is wearing what looks like an Illuminati insignia in his silhouette teaser. Did Boxer have a new employer? Did he sell the bandaged kid to Urien?
Is FANG’s coup sponsored or motivated by the Illuminati as well?
Was Vega promised eternal youth by Urien? Does he even give a fuck?
Who unleashed Necalli into the picture?
Was Nash really specifically revived to take care of Bison?
Is Viper CIA or Secret Society like her SF4 ending possibly alludes to.
More than anything, I seriously want to know what the Illuminati have to gain from sticking their nose into Bison’s business. Then I want to know if Bison is aware of all this plotting and double-crossing, if he intends turn the tables on them, or if at the very least he has a contingency plan to survive all this treachery.
*By all reasonable accounts, Abigail isn’t the type of name a person would typically associate with a street gang. But when the Mad Gear went looking for an enforcer to take control of Metro City’s scenic Bay Area, the most highly qualified candidate they could find was a huge mountain of a man… but with a girl’s name.
To say that Abigail was cursed from the cradle would be an understatement. Bound by the stigma of his unconventional birth name, Abigail struggled through those arduous years of school, ignoring the ceaseless teasing and taunting brought on by his schoolmates. Although considerably bigger than most of them, Abigail had been taught by his parents that violence was not an acceptable way to resolve conflicts. While it seemed like good parenting at the time, the constant ridicule from his classmates ultimately led Abigail to become withdrawn. As a result, his social skills deteriorated, to the point where even his small circle of friends eventually grew apart from him.*
