It shows Ryu cleaning a grave (probably his master’s) with water. A girl (ojou-san) asks if he really have to go (to the tournament). Ryu says that yes, because their master (her father) was murdered. The girl hugs Ryu saying that she doesn’t want to lose him too. Ken appears and mentions that he discovered who his master’s enemy is: Sagat. They go their way leaving behind the girl with tears in her eyes…
The Fanbook manga is almost an exact continuation of this… There it shows Ryu leaving the dojo, with ojou-san being extremely sad. She decides to pursue him. When she finds Ryu, a bear attacks them. Ryu pulverizes the bear with the Hadoken, a technique which he had a hard time to master. Ojou-san faints. Ryu covers her with the upper part of his gi, and go to his path to become a true warrior…
I really don’t know how those stories play out between Capcom and a given publication. Gamest seems to be the only source for those stories before the All About books. I don’t know if they just make up those things and Capcom is ok with it, if Capcom gives them a basic guidance for them to develop the story or if Capcom writes this stuff and the publication simply reprints it. What I do know is that a lot of this stuff is mentioned by Capcom publications (like AAC and Eternal). Let’s take a look at Vega’s stories:
1: SF2 WW
Gamest publishes an story that Vega is a brutal fighter, but also admired. He’s pissed that the people from Japan actually compare him with other known people. He plans to display Psycho Power (yes, his energy is called like that since WW) on television for the whole world to know about his strength.
2: SF2 Dash/Champion Edition
Gamest publishes Vega’s origin (in 1992!!!) he was a promising fighter with murderous intent (no, I’m not talking about SNH). He aimed to be the best in all the things that he does, and including fighting. His master was the sole Psycho Power user, and for a while managed to keep Vega to work his psyche in a good way. However, Vega gives in to his evil ways and kills his master, following a killing rampage. Then he disappears… only to become the evil boss.
This story is mentioned in Complete File, AAC and Eternal. Complete file even metions that Vega killed his master with the Psycho Crusher.
Until the Zero series, Gamest wouldn’t update the 12 original character stories for Hyper Fighting, Super and Super X.
3: SFZ1
Vega pursues the heir of ansatsuken. He wants to learn about a certain move. He faces Gouken who gets defeated but didn’t use the Hadoken, Shoryuken and Tatsumaki in his fight against Vega. Vega leaves, saying that his pupils would show him those moves… That’s a clear indication that Vega knew that Ryu defeated Sagat with the Shoryuken and wanted to know more about the technique/fighter that defeated the Emperor of Muay Thai. However, nothing like that is mentioned in-game where he fights Rose (neither this story is mentioned again in subsequent publications).
This story was published in an resumed version in Himitsu Hyakka SF2 book. The complete version in All About Street Fighter Zero and Gamest Mook SFZ1.
4: SFZ2
Psycho Crusher
Vega is increasing his power in a Shadoloo lab by facing several fighters hoping he could get hate an anger from them, but instead he can only get fear from them. He hears about a fighter who defeated Sagat. He destroys the lab with the Psycho Crusher.
This story was published in Gamest Mook SFZ2 and All About SFZ2 (possibly in Z2 exclusive publications for Saturn and PS1 too). Curiously, a translated and shortened version of this story was in Capcom’s USA Alpha 2 and EX+@ site back in 1997…
5: SFZ3
Secret Point 48106
Mark Douglass (I think that’s his name) reads a report about a subject found near the Secret Point 48106 shore. The subject’s name is Allen and it seems that he was expeienced with Psycho Power. Allen seems to have suffered a lot and only reacts when his interrogators mentions about Vega, Psycho Power or when a fake Psycho Power light is shown. Douglass decides to call Chun-Li who is in middle east. The time to take down Shadoloo has come.
This was published only in All About Street Fighter Zero 3. Allen was mentioned in AAC. Curiously, SFZ3 Gamest Mook doens’t have the character’s accounts.
6: SF3 (1997)
SF3 Fanbook mentions that Vega and Shadoloo are “alive and well”. Confirming that Vega was simply defeated by Gouki in SSF2X.
7:SF3 - 3rd Strike
Gamest #255 have a character relation chart changing the previous story. Vega was pullverized by Gouki in SSF2X. Probably, this was implemented because of Vega being blown up in almost every SFZ3 ending. Later it was reinforced by AAC.
In my opinion, this info is written by Capcom and the magazines simply print them.
