The impact of FINAL ROUND tournaments over the years in the Fighting game community

PART 2 “Outside the Game!”

Final Round is a gathering for gamers. But more importantantly it is a gathering! True. Video games are what brought us all together be it Street Fighter, Mario Kart, Smash Brothers, Final Fantasy VII, Phantasy Star Online, Monopoly or Water Gun Wars. The people who attend Final Round usually return to Final Round because of the confortable atmosphere. Yeah it may be the Southern Hospitality, but I think it is more so because of the “Outside the Game” Mentality that drives a lot of the Team EMS members. It the, “I understand that your good at games but what else can you do?” train of thought. Hense taking it outside the game. Over the years I have met some extremely gifted players, talented muscians and brilliant human beings at the DOJO and FINAL ROUND. And I’m thankful for everyone that I’ve met. (Even Squirrel)

So when you come to FRXI don’t think of it as just a another video game tournament. Because there are leagues of growth to be obtain there!

(I should have ran for President)

Final Round is what ultimately got me to take fighting games seriously and travel all over the USA trying to challenge people. My first FR I got DEAD LAST. I practiced my ass off for a year and came back and got 2nd place. I would have liked first, but there were some 70 entrants in 3s that year and was quite and accomplishment for me over all. I do not know what other conditions would have possessed me to practice a video game 5-7 days a week for a year STRAIT. NO LIE. I also traveled 100s of miles to tournaments leading up to that Final Round to hone my skills. I ate, drank and breathed SF 3s for a year!

MORE IMPORTANTLY, I met some great people and made some great friends who I can rely on through the tournament. A lot of these same people who have helped throw and organize FR have been there for me outside of a good ass whoopin in 3s.

Thanks for the kind words everyone, but the sponsership was a no go! Oh well got to do it the old fashion way.

Wow, I still remember FR1 at GSU. I didn’t get anywhere since I wasn’t familiar with any of the games (Second Impact, MvC2, DOA2 ) but the experience was great. The finals on the projector was too good. I remember another tourney that was somewhere near Midtown, mostly a DC tournament with CvS1. I broke out my brand new Ascii Stick FT and lost due to not being used to it  I didn’t hang out as much with the Dojo crew as others but I had good times when I did.
