Well, maybe it’s my flaw, but I seem to think there is often a certain character type in police force that would enjoy being able to taser someone. And if not, if they felt that their authority was being challenge and the sense of power they had being stripped by disregard of their will, they would be more likely to taser someone to regain that sense of power. Now, I know this is not all policemen/people in this position, but I know it happens a lot.
Security guards and bouncer etc like to fuck people up a lot of the time, you dont have many people in this position who are adverse to it. The same type of mentality leeks into the police force as well.
I’ve met a lot of decent cops, but I’ve met just as many assholes who havent gotten over the high school bully type mentality.
Anyway, all this to say that obviously if they made a better policy (a course of action more befitting the offense) that they wouldnt be given the opportunity to exercise this type of shit…
But the fact that they have the option gives them ample opportunity to abuse the fact and get away with it. Even if the policy was to only use it if they feel threatened they would still get away with it.
The policy would be to only use the taser if you felt your life was in danger, but there’d still be that one dumbass that decides to use it on a power trip.
I’d like to see if they would publish their policy - that would be fucking interesting. The policy to carry a taser to begin with should be reviewed because it’s ridiculous. Fare police with tasers… fucking retarded government.
Honestly I’d say a madcatz ps2 pad would be best. Its hard as hell soldering shit onto sony pads. The copper connections are hidden under a layer of i-dont-know-what and i’d be spending way too much time scraping that cuz if i go too fast i can fuck up the copper lines. So go for one of those $14 madcatz ps2 pads.I can try with whatever you have but I offer no guarantees if its not a madcatz!
Khiem, I talked to the arcade dude at Algonquin and he said he expects the 3s machine to be fixed within this week.
Gwai Lo… I couldnt agree more. It seems common practice to throw the blame elsewhere whenever a problem is found within a system. “Dont look at me, I’m just following orders.” “Don’t look at me, I’m just carrying out the policy set up by the board of directors.” “Don’t look at us, we’re just doing whats in the best interest of the company”. Basically, the person to blame becomes nonexistant, therefore the problem persists because nothing gets challenged. Its set up this way intentionally… centuries and centuries of experience with controlling groups of people is being put to the test right now and its working well.
Sure it happens, but I don’t think that character type makes up the majority and we have no idea if these police officers should be held in that image (or the right to imo).
The real question is why is this? I think it’s way too simple to assume that people like that are simply drawn into those positions because the positions are supposed to be regulated to not only maintain control but promote proper conduct. In fact, that should apply to positions of power more so than any other employment position by far.
As far as I see it, the policies are almost always promoting stereotypes, quick action and an open door for aggression. These people are bred to be what you see.
The policy makers allow this and promote this. Think about the fact that when this happens, there is never any punishment (outside of when there’s mass public outcry and even then the punishment is usually weak). Actually usually the officers are celebrated.
Did you guys not see the police state-like march I posted in the states a couple months ago? There was a rally against the Government infringements on rights and military trained policed marched and controlled the streets with Rubber guns. They shot this lady right in the head and then they showed them laughing and celebrating the whole incident.
The root is at the top of the control and the top branches it’s influence to every individual under it. So even the good ones are affected and likely to be much more aggressive than natural. To me, you can only fix things from there…everything else is a quick clean up (or appearance of one).
Who’s down to come out tonight?
Babylon looks like a maybe, even though the last time I went with Dee the most shocking and horrible hiphop show was going on…I need to relieve that nightmare!
Unfortunately it is the nature of institutions to promote and those who represent their organically-derived systems of norms, mores, etc.
The thing about top-down change is that one cannot lead institutions with no knowledge of their cultures any better than one can by attempting to change the organization from within (well, any political organization, and this for sure includes the security apparatus.)
Straight up the choice often comes down to
having no means of commanding the behavior of subordinates and changing it, due to “outsider” status
being co-opted into the existing system.
I don’t think I even need to throw up examples of this kind of thing, but just off the top of my head the international landmine ban will do splendidly.
If you look up the Ottawa Treaty on Landmines, basically what happened was that NGOs promoting a locally-driven, effective means of landmine bans ended up legitimizing a pretty ridiculous agreement wherein major powers would sell developing countries overpriced demining equipment to remove mines that said great powers planted.
The anti-mine NGOs, who entered into the dialogue because it represented an inclusion of non-state elements in an international treaty under UN auspice, appeared to be part of the consensus between self-interested states instead of as the representatives of civil society (the space that exists between direct political participation and the private sphere.)
Because the states outnumbered them they had way less leverage to impose their own language and terms on the treaty (in the negotiation process). Therefore, by accepting the language and logic of the other participants they, despite their own substantively different positions, effectively legitimized something they were opposed to and had every intention of changing from the beginning.
Oh yeah, and Foreskin, I’m not saying anything, but keep that shit up and 5 fingers and a face are going to have a hilarious conversation.
