I think he represents the large majority of gamers.
The way I see it most games illustrate different types of gaming roots(and mixes of them).

Games that essentially stem from basic single player card games like solitaire.

Games that stem from the ideas and concepts in chess.
-
Games that stem from things like x’s and o’s.
-
Games that stem from puzzles.
-
Games like role playing games.
-
Games like street fighter, halo, poker.
-
Games like mario party.
-
Games like tetris.
I think most people will fall into the category of 1 and 3. Halo I put in group 2 because of the equal playing ground and the head to head aspect of it. however, it can also appeal to gamers in groups 1/3, but obviously not on the same level.
I split them up like this because I find gamers, as people, rarely will fall into all categories. And by ‘gamer’ I mean someone who is passionate about playing the games (specifically video games as they are now the more dominant form of gaming).
Now, I’m not saying they will not appreciate/play games from the other categories, but I think they will always have a stronger passion for their own category.
Myself, I prefer category 2 and 4 games.
I realize my categories are pretty loose, and obviously games do not always fall into each category explicitly, but I think the categories are pretty visible.
I put role playing games in category 1, this isnt always the case, a lot of games will be mixed with category 4. It’s the puzzle that makes the game interesting. A role playing game with no puzzle to solve will quickly get boring (for me).
I’m going to try to name my categories.
- Solo games (essentially just to kill time on your own)
- War games
- Community games (relatively simple, kill time with others)
- Puzzle games
- Fantasy games
- Execution
- [EDIT] Memory
- [EDIT] Hand-eye coordination
- [EDIT] Reaction

Can you put yourself largely into one of these 4 categories - aside from the obvious one that includes fighting games?
For all of these categories I’m suggesting, I leave out the aspect of fantasy, as I assume all modern video games include this to one extent or the other - however, perhaps this should be the 5th category? I’ll include it up there. Perhaps role playing games would be a mix of 1,4 and 5 then.
I also do not include execution as a category as I feel it belongs to all, but this might also be a 6th category (ie darts, pool,) - fuckit, this hits my category list.
So I think I like fighting games because they hit on 2,5,6. (This also means that i would no longer classify fighting games as I originally did as entirely in category 2 - however, I still think they largely fit here). I suppose finding out what can be done in the game also satisfies my need for a puzzle.
Other commonalities in video games also include hand eye coordination as either a category or as an attribute - i feel it’s one of the big relations between sport and video games. (On a side note I also think street fighter is like a lazy sport).
It’s crazy when you actually sit here and think about why you game or what makes it interesting for you.

NINJA EDIT (3rd of the labelled edits): I think people can also fall in to category 1 type of games if they are not gamers, people who will play the game as a last resort to kill time but are not exactly passionate about gaming.

edit 4: I think the best first gen video games were good because of 4 and 6.
edit: Added memory as a category, also very important in a lot of old school games. Comes from games like trying to match cards.
edit: Added more categories to talk about later… starting to mentally bridge the gap between sport and video games and everything in between… I should write a fuckin book…
