The Horror Thread: Talk all things macabre

I’ll reserve judgement until I see the movie. I’m actually in the middle of reading IT, and that’s not how I picture Penntwise at all. Maybe it’s because Curry did such an excellent job, but his version is a lot closer to what I visualize.

Those of you that enjoyed “Amateur Night” (the first segment from V/H/S) will be excited to hear that a new full length feature based off of that world is opening December 2nd called “Siren”.

Hannah Fierman returns as ‘Lily’ and it’s been getting good buzz on the festival circuit.
Definitely looking forward to this!

That’s cool to see, I’ll for sure check it out, since it was one of the stronger segments from the first entry.

Man, I sure could go for a good werewolf flick…

I wonder how much involvement King had on this vs the miniseries…

The Howling, American Werewolf in London, Dog Soldiers, Wolfen, Wolf, The Company of Wolves, Silver Bullet, Ginger Snaps, Bad Moon, The Wolf Man (Classic and Director’s Cut remake), Wolf Cop, Late Phases, Werewolf: The Beast Among Us.

About all I can think of for decent to great films. Sadly Werewolf movies aren’t all that prevalent.

I don’t believe King has much flex on this film, but then again I haven’t heard much. Like I’m still unsure if it’s two films or merged into one now.

Wer and Howl aren’t bad.

That’s a good question. In the book, Pennywise is described as Bozo the Clown meets Ronald McDonald, with a colorful suit and orange pompoms down the front. Curry’s costume pretty much nails it. The new one, I don’t know. First glance makes me not like it as much with the frills and the skirt, but it’s hard to tell how effective it is from a still. I want to see the guy in action because that image makes him look kinda feminine, and that’s not how the character is written at all.

The 80s to present instead of 1950s to 80’s isn’t too big a deal for me, since I was a kid in the 80s and can hopefully relate. I just hope having it spilt into two movies set at the two different times doesn’t fuck it up as much. I guess it’s a little easier to pull off switching back and forth in a 1000+ page book than it is in two 2+(?) hour movies. We’ll see, I guess, but I’m glad I’m reading the book first. I own the mini-series, but it’s been years since I’ve watched it, so the cast doesn’t have too much influence over how I picture the characters, except for maybe the clown.

Stumbled across an old article on Lilja’s Library while checking out more pics of the IT remake…did anybody else hear about this?

NEW TELEVISION SERIES BASED ON STEPHEN KING’S “THE MIST”
ROLLS INTO NOVA SCOTIA

Produced by TWC-Dimension Television and Magic Rock Productions

Premieres on US Cable Network Spike in 2017

Halifax, NS, July 18, 2016 – “The Mist,” a multi-million dollar original television series adapted from the Stephen King novella begins principle photography today in Halifax, Nova Scotia. American cable network Spike TV has ordered 10 hour-long episodes of the series which will premiere on Spike in 2017.

“The Mist” tells the story of a foreboding mist that arrives in one small town ushering in a terrifying new reality for its residents, putting their humanity to the test. What will people do to survive when blinded by fear? The cast includes Morgan Spector, Frances Conroy, Alyssa Sutherland, Gus Birney, Dan Butler, Luke Cosgrove, Danica Curcic, Okezie Morro, Darren Pettie, Russell Posner and Isiah Whitlock, Jr.

“We were intent on finding the perfect location – a place that could double for Maine, where the story is set, and one with an experienced crew base and proven track record that would work to fulfill our other requirements,” says Tom Prince, Executive Vice President of Physical Production/Post of TWC-Dimension Television, which is producing the series in conjunction with Halifax-based Magic Rock Productions.

“We intend to see this series develop into a signature show for Spike, and after hearing the pitch for Nova Scotia, we felt confident that the look, feel and the overall attitude of the province were right for this project,” says Sharon Levy, Executive Vice President, Original Series, Spike.

The series will be shot mostly in Halifax with some additional shooting in the Windsor area.

The movie was frickin’ sweet, despite them fucking up on the spiders and the sorta lame ending (I wanted complete…global…saturation). I hope this show delivers.

(Nice to see Dog Soldiers get some love.)

I actually liked the ending of the movie version of The Mist, unless you’re calling it lame because Thomas Jane’s terrible acting ruined in, which case I agree. Unfortunately I think he ruined the movie overall ultimately given he was the main character. Sigh. Otherwise, that movie would have been good.

To answer your question though, no, I hadn’t heard of it.

Very nice. “Amateur Night” was indeed one of the better parts of V/H/S. Makes me wonder if they’ll eventually try to make a similar thing out of the “Tuesday the 17th” segment.

Ok, managed to track down more info about Spike’s adaptation of The Mist, and was initially puzzled, cuz the character names were entirely new. Turns out the adaptation happens in another part of Bridgton (or maybe even in another town) with a different group of people stuck in a shopping mall. Still unsure, however, if it’s the SAME town, or if the mist is a much more far-reaching thing as it was in the short story, and we’re dealing with another town entirely.

Even though I hear The Green Inferno wasn’t the greatest film, im curious and would like to see it just to see how it came out.

I also got some free sneak peak tickets to go see the remake of Blair Witch next Tuesday. Here is hoping its actually entertaining.

Let me know how that is man, I’m genuinely curious to see if it’s worth a watch.

Think Rob Zombie’s 31 came out this weekend, not quite sure if I want to catch it or not. Just looks like more of the same from him.

Blair Witch project original was horrible. “Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck” ~Blair Witch Project. I feel like I’m going to get hate for this because omg critically acclaimed low budget film. But it was super wack.

Ok, I saw the movie last night. How much into detail do you want me to go? Posting spoilers and all that stuff?

I did not like it and it was pretty disappointing. I wouldn’t spend money to go see it. Skip it.

Sure I don’t care much for spoilers if you feel it doesn’t ruin the movie. Surprised to hear you didn’t enjoy it, so something fucked up must have happened.

Green Inferno looks alright, but it really does look like they just ripped off Cannibal Holocaust

Wasn’t Green Inferno supposed to be a remake or spiritual successor to Cannibal Holocaust?

Anywho, next post will be filled with spoilers and stuff for Blair Witch, just scroll past down this post if you don’t want to read it. Im posting the super spoilery stuff in a spoiler tag to talk about the stuff that of course, is the stuff that irritated me the most and could ruin the experience for others so yeah, tread carefully.

/spoilers

Yeah I thought the movie was going to be a remake until the day before yesterday, had no idea it was a direct sequel (Book of shadows never happened, ignore that shit)

Anyway, this new movie, Blair Witch, did not add more to the story, it was realllyyy copy / paste. It really felt like watching the first movie all over again, and they used alot of special effects near the end which ruined some of the mystery of the original using your imagination to fill the gaps of what horrors are happening to the lost campers.

Another thing that bugged me was that unlike the first movie or other found footage movies like REC, you are behind the lens of a camera and you take the point of view of that character, it immerses you, you see what is happening as if you were there through their eyes, in this film, every character is wearing an earpiece with a camera on it so they can take Hollywood-esque style camera changes, constantly changing your point of view to the point where its not even a found footage style anymore, if someone goes missing, the mystery of what happened to them is gone, due to them focusing on their earpiece camera so you see what happens until they meet their fate.

It just ruins alot of the atmosphere that made the original so creepy.

Really nitty gritty spoiler stuff ahead. Only read if you dont want to have the magic spoiled for you, some ending stuff talked about.

Spoiler

Ok, so, one of my biggest complaints about this movie, is that unlike the original, you know, campers getting abducted at night, hunted at night, lured into the house and dealt with by a mysterious witch, the movie moves into the realm of the supernatural. The forest is somehow alive, they are now in a alternate universe where time stands still and such as they are cut off from the normal world (think of the forest scene in the hobbit movies, the second movie i believe, desolation of smaug. when they get lost), and of course, unlike the first one (i doubt they planned to make more movies than this one) you do get to see the witch (briefly during chase scenes). The end of the movie is basically what you can expect, don’t expect any twists or surprises, it plays it waaay to safe to the original. Like I said, copy and paste. No one was clapping or cheering when the end credits rolled.

It was just disappointing. Wait until its on Netflix.

(Spoiler tags literally just involve putting the word “spoiler” between brackets twice, with the second instance being “/spoiler”, @“Dios <-X->”.)

That said, I do not really think that anyone here cares about the Blair Witch remake (?), so you are likely fine in this instance. Personally, I was not even of its existence until about a week or two before it was slated to come out.

I am honestly still surprised that “found film” is still a thing, if decreasingly as of late, even the first Blair Witch was a lot more decent than I expected from what I remember of it.

The thing that made Blair Witch make sells in 1st place was trying to trick people that it was real, now that everyone knows its not real, its kind of lost mystery

Looking up some tweets about this movie, its alarming to see how many people are posting with the assumption that this is a remake, and not a direct sequel from the original movie. I was in the same boat until I looked up the story for this movie in a quick google search the night before i saw it. But yeah, its not a remake.
