The Horror Thread: Talk all things macabre

I need to pick up that steelbook of the first Demons…one of my all-time favorites. I made it a point to go see it every time it played at the revival theaters around here…great experience with an audience. The movie literally had everything I loved as a kid.

Demons 2 I was never much of a fan of…I never thought it was bad, it just didn’t grab me like the first, didn’t have the cool setting, set pieces and characters that I loved in Demons.

Demons was the one at the theater or something right? Sometimes I got it mixed up with Night of the Demons… speaking of which, I’ve been super busy with work lately, going to watch at least 3 movies today… starting with Night of the Demons 2…

Yeah Demons 2 was a big step back from 1, I like it but man the pacing was awful.

I agree, while Demons 2 is a step down, not comparing it against the first it still stands as an entertaining Horror film with a fun premise. It just lacks a liiiittle bit of the imagination and mystique of the first title while budgeting down some of the special effects. I do enjoy that a few of the same actors have roles as completely different people in this though. Awesome black pimp becomes awesome weight lifter for example.

I do applaud it for having the balls to kill and demon up a child who then gets shitcanned in an Alien homage. I also liked the main Demon pulling the strings here and the ending was really entertaining, and felt the survivors versus Demons parking lot brawl was pretty fantastic if one-sided. Again the first is a true landmark but I still really dig the film.

If you can find it Ramrod jump on that, if you want a detailed look at the BD, special features and extras included let me know and I’ll type something up. I think my favorite thing included in the Demons BD Steelbook is an authentic reprint of the ticket for the cinema. Thing is really cool.

Haffy: I actually picked up Night of the Demons because I always confused the two, never saw it until I got the Scream Factory release. Fun film, but I feel it drags its feet quite a bit. I do like that it turns some of the Horror conventions upside down and the dialogue is hysterical.

Eat a bowl of fuck guys.

So I found out about this Horror Anthology… Dead of Night (1977), its on Youtube

Going to watch it later. I was told to just skip to the last story.

Picked up Alien: Isolation and also a region-free BD box set of the Predator films. Let you guys know how the BD’s hold up. Isolation is pretty damn awesome so far, started on Hard and I wouldn’t want it any other way. The Alien AI, graphics, and sound quality are simply astonishing and it’s a worthy title in the Alien game IP after the colossal flop that was Colonial Marines.

I love both Alien and Aliens and feel each type of film deserves it’s fair share of adaptions. But Alien hasn’t got a lot of Horror love and more Action, and this is definitely a Horror take and very faithful at that. Pick it up and support it if the title strikes your interest.

I watched “The Living Dead of Manchester Morgue” aka “Let Sleeping Corpses Lie” over the weekend. Great fucking movie, some of the creepiest zombies ever. Pretty heavy handed environmental message in it, but what would a zombie movie be without not subtle at all social commentary.

Just saw you can watch this on Hulu so check it out if you’ve got it.

Just saw The Town That Dreaded Sundown (2014 Remake/Reboot/Faux-Sequel?)… It kinda reminded me of Scream with the movie in a movie thing and how meta things might seem to be. I haven’t seen the original but heard its creepy as well and can be considered as one of the proto-slasher…

By the way, managed to find a copy of Fulci’s City of The Living Dead. Going to watch that tomorrow.

Started playing The Evil Within too, but still very early in the game… Chapter 2… lol. Having a hard time juggling between all of the things I wanna do.
Just started playing Monster Hunter 4G as well

Fright Night is easily one of my favourite movies of all time, let alone vampire movies. I even advise checking out the sequel, which is surprisingly hard to find. Remake wasn’t too bad, but nowhere near as fucking awesome.

You should check out the movie 976-EVIL for another good appearance by the dude who played “Evil” Ed. Avoid the sequel to that movie though, it’s fucking Bad with a capital FUCK YOU!

I actually prefer Demons 2, to the first one. While I hate the opening bit of Demons 2, and when shit hits the fan in the first movie, it REALLY hits the fan, Demons 2 just had more memorable scenes, for me.

Fun fact: it was the first horror movie I ever saw, and literally scared me so bad, that it took YEARS for me to ever watch it again, even after I started getting into horror.

Anywho, what’s everybody’s feeling about High Tension? When I saw it, I generally liked it. Haven’t seen it since it came out, but I’ve read a lot of people’s reviews saying they didn’t like it at all. WTF?

I like High Tension.

Check out The Loved Ones. I had a good time watching that movie.

Ended up watching Hellraiser III and Children of the Corn II. First is a film I know is pretty bleh but somehow I still enjoy it, the concepts used were unique as is the look of the film. However the acting is incredibly wooden and the Cenobites are largely unimaginative (Although I still like the CD Player one).

Children of the Corn II was hard to find for a long time but popped up on Amazon Prime so I gave it a go. Not a bad film, not a good film, just something that is there. The main kid Micah really steals the scenes he is put into and the actor should have had some more Horror roles out of this but it seems that didn’t happen. Skip it.

Phantom of the Opera 1989 with Robert Englund is now on Netflix and Amazon Prime, do yourself a favor and see it. Despite the horrible poster and cover art making it appear as if he is Freddy, Englund is able to use his theatrical prowess in a darker tale of this classic story and I find it rather enjoyable. It’s nice to see Robert Englund more or less in his prime doing something other than a NOES film.

Within the Woods, the film created to get financial backing for The Evil Dead, is finally on Youtube. I first saw this film about twelve years ago and enjoyed the fascinating look on how one of my favorites was created. Take a look for an alternative viewing of the story and the earliest showings of Raimi’s camera tricks.

I think most people who dislike High Tension, do so due to the ending… I have no problem with the ending, pretty solid horror to me.

I didn’t really like High Tension…it certainly couldn’t compare to the other french stuff coming out at the time like Inside, Martyrs, or even Frontiere(s)

Hellraiser 3 used to be one of my favorites bitd…it was one of the early vhs horror releases where the unrated cut was easily accessible. The early 90s was a great time for horror. Fun fact: Hellraiser 3 and Children of the Corn 2 were both filmed in my home state of North Carolina, back when it had a bunch of good tax rebates.

Ayo if you haven’t seen Children of the Corn 3, get on that - it’s definitely the cream of the crop of the entire series. Part 4 is actually pretty good too.

@ Soviet: I’ve seen both of them, 976-EVIL used to be a rental my Dad and I would get all the time, I really enjoy that film and try to show it off to as many people as I can. Fright Night 2 is alright, it could have been WAY better but a lot of the actors were tied up in other projects and couldn’t return, leaving us with what we got. I still find it entertaining, just not as masterpiece material as the first.

Haute Tension I remember seeing, but the only thing I really remember from the film is how normal but kind of stupid the killer was. It kind of took the “Tension” out for me when it is just an Aussie Hillbilly trolling people. I agree with Ramrod in that the three films he listed are leagues ahead of this.

Picked up The Evil Within, Shinji Mikami’s swan song as a game director. I have mixed feelings on the game but overall I do enjoy and like it. Just despite telling myself not to, I expected way more out of this. Once I get further into it and finish it, have a little time to sit on it, I’ll see what I think then.

Also fuck it here is some CV music cause…Horror and stuff.

God damn Castlevania Chronicles was so good.

High Tension was cool, but out of the whole New Wave French Extremism stuff, I still think it goes:

Inside
Martyrs
Frontiers
High Tension.

I watched Hellraiser 1-4 over the weekend. I guess I could never appreciate how well spoken Pinhead is, when i was younger. But damn Doug Bradley did his thing.

Most disturbing/haunting movies imo

. Martyrs
. Sinister (last 15 minutes were meh, but the entirety of the movie is pure dread)
. Session 9
. Se7en
. Under the skin
. The Descent
. Red White and Blue

Entertaining as hell, but not all that impactful and/or scary
. Evil Dead originals
. Dawn of the Dead (original and remake)
. The Collector/The Collection
. The Oculus
. Pontypool
. Splinter
. Inside
. Dead Girl

Overrated
. A Serbian Film
. Irreversible
. Saw/Hostel
. Paranormal Activity
. The Conjuring
. Insidious
. The Shining/The Exorcist (Seriously, what is everyone’s damn obsession with these two?)

Also really stoked for the babadook

Doug Bradley is awesome, classically trained actor and was good friends with Clive Barker to boot. Even in the later Hellraisers for how god awful they are, Bradley still plays it up in top form. Given his history him and Christopher Lee should do a joint Death Metal album.

I was going to watch Hellraiser IV myself tonight as I’ve only seen it once before and forgot a lot about it. I just remember Pinhead in Space and that is about it. Then probably The Town that Dreaded Sundown.

To be fair, Irreversible really wasn’t a horror film. It was more so super hyped because of that 9 minute, fixed camera rape scene, which in my opinion was not something I wanted to sit through. A serbian film was just shock just to shock. The movie was pure garbage, not even enjoyable.

I am happy you mentioned Pontypool. I have been suggesting that movie to so many people, but it is widely slept on. Such a cool take on the Zombie/Infected genre.

Oh and I hated Session 9. When I saw it I thought I was being trolled because so many people hailed it as this amazing movie.

Yeah I knew he was classically trained. And what is crazy is that I read the Hellraiser comic (Boom studios) and I can only imagine Pinhead speaking with Bradley’s voice.

Hellraiser 4 is probably the last decent one of the series. I only say this because they try to give an origin to the toy box, which I thought was cool. I mean yeah Pinhead is in space, but basically only for the last 10 minutes of the film.
