The Horror Thread: Talk all things macabre

No one really liked Hellraiser Bloodlines?

I don’t think it’s THAT good (studio interference ruined what it could have been), but it’s way better than the travesty that was Hell on Earth.

Yeah, they’re still there. I checked as I was listing them.

Didn’t care for the Pact? I thought it had a really nice, creepy atmosphere to it. More effective than the Paranormal Activity movies, at least.
They removed Lake Mungo, sadly. I thought that had a nice creepy payoff at the end.

Hell on Earth is cheesy fun. Bloodline is a mess that has some good ideas. I liked how the Twin Cenobite was created and how that paid off.

FT13 and NOES I’m about the same, Halloween I would switch around 1 and 3, Hellraiser 1 was the only one I finished watching since couldn’t enjoy the sequels at all, Chucky is right, and I’ve only watched TCM 1

Hellraiser 2 is pretty good. It does enter cheesy horror territory a few times but is pretty restrained. TCM2 might be worth a look if you like dark comedy/gore films. It features Tom Savini doing the effects.

I know I originally asked Ayo but I’m also curious about your opinion on Audition. I don’t think any other movie I’ve seen has really brought out the batshit stalker concept nearly as well as that

Audition is one of the greatest horror films of it’s time. Sad, that a lot of dudes would not be able to stick with it unless they’ve heard about the praise it’s received or how sick it is. But it could be Miike’s masterpiece.

I haven’t seen any of Miike’s recent films though (He directed the Ace Attorney live action film… My mind snapped after I learned that) and he’s been keeping far away from surrealist/brutal horror that made him known.

That said, Takashi Miike tier list:

Audition
Fudoh: The New Generation
Ichi the Killer
Visitor Q
Dead or Alive
Graveyard of Honor
Gozu

I should take the time to watch Full Metal Yakuza, Agitator, and Zatoichi.

Visitor Q was hilarious, I can’t verbalize how I felt after watching that

Latest Miike I saw in July was “Lesson of Evil”, my friend rent the dvd, I liked it so much I bought the bluray… I had a phase where I looked for everything Miike, I think I’ve seen about 20+ of his movies…

Watching the first Resident Evil film again on Netflix, I have no idea why, this whole film series is terrible.

I have no idea why the RE series does so well at the box office when the first 2 films did mediocre box office.

The films are complete shit.

Sorry for double post but, what kind of horror games do you guys play around this time?

For me it’s usually one of the Splatterhouse games. Especially 3 because the music is just like an 80’s horror flick.

For example:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s57bahPilTI [/details]

There’s 2-3 other films with a similar score but the funny thing is that I watched the Fulci film well after I first played Splatterhouse 3. Other titles I try to play are the oldschool Castlevanias and The Haunting: Starring Polterguy.

RE 1-3 Speedruns, Silent Hill, Deadly Premonition, Alan Wake, Half-Life 1 or one of the expansions, Blood, Cold Fear, Stubbs the Zombie, Nightmare Creatures, Castlevania titles, Sweet Home, Splatterhouse, Onimusha 1 & 2, and Clock Tower titles always make it in my rotation. I am sure I am forgetting something.

@Tweleve: Sorry for being late. I enjoyed Audition to an extent, I think it is a culturally relevant film and also a great introduction into what Japanese Horror has to offer. Although at times it fell into “Misery but with Asians” territory overall it was a disturbing and clever film. I just never had much interest in returning to the film and don’t remember a lot of what happens outside of key scenes and some random bits.

SLASHER TIER TIME!

FF13: Part II, Part III, Part IV, Remake, Part VI, Part I, Part V, VIII, VII, Jason X, Hell if I have to list it.
NOES: Part I, Part III, Part II, Part IV, New Nightmare, Part VI, Part V, Crossover…remake.
Halloween: Part III, Part I, Part II, Part VI sorta, H20, fuck the rest.

Don’t think Chucky is long enough or has enough good films to justify even listing, same with every other Horror franchise. The big three all that really matter. Unless we get into John Carpenter movie tiers, which could be wildly different.

8-Bit Shining video, this is pretty neat:

I’m convinced dudes like Friday the 13th Part 2 because of that ass shot.

I forgot about DAT ASS, but it is a good reason. Part II has sack head Jason, and physically he looks like he towers over the others. To me it just feels like a much darker film, and less routine like how the series progresses. Some of his kills are just brutal, as are the fight scenes. The opening is so well done and hooks you right away and I enjoy the reveal of his face.

Just a great watch, and about the only film in the series where I found Jason just a bit scary.

TCM has a Devil kind of Marathon tonight, though I got the timezones wrong and pretty much missed a movie I wanted to watch. Here is the schedule:

Burn, Witch, Burn!
The Tomb of Ligeia
The Seventh Victim
Curse of the Demon
I walked with a Zombie
The Leopard Man

Curse of the Demon in particular I’ve been trying to catch for a while.

Watching The Church tonight… heard its good

I just can’t get into slasher movies. There’s more than enough crazy white people killing other people in real life. I prefer horror with things that shouldn’t (or things we don’t think really) exist. I like my entertainment to be an escape from reality, not a mirror.

Michele Soavi’s The Church was pretty good, Asia Argento’s hella young/cute in this :3

At first I thought its directed by Dario Argento, I think I’ll look for more movie by this guy…

I’m mad I can’t find my Severed books. They woulda been perfect for this time of year… Collecting comics is hard when you are unorganized. Gonna have to make do with Silent Hill and Lone Survivor.

@Louis, Shitstorm kinda sucks so far compared to last year. They’re running thin for games to play.

@HFX Check out Soavi’s other 3 horror films. Stagefright is an amazing self-aware slasher. Cemetery Man is perhaps his masterpiece, an existential zombie art house comedy. The Sect is the only one not on DVD in the US so check the torrents. Damn good film.

@Louiscipher Oh wait, I think I’ve seen both Stagefright and Cemetery Man… Its been years I guess and I just forgot the director’s name… I’ll try to look for The Sect. Thanks
