While the beginning of Rob Zombie’s Halloween was semi-interesting, the rest of the film was a rushed frame for frame remake that left out a lot of the charm of the original. There is no reason to really watch it over the first, and it’s yet another film that tries that explain the mystery regarding Michael but fails because it doesn’t live up to individual expectations.
Japanese Horror is just as varied as American Horror, though they have their tropes. Generalizing is a bad thing to do as they have both great and awful films. A lot of them also needlessly drag on, but overall it’s a fun genre to dip into and I enjoy their ghost tales or older myths.
Oh and monster films, Kaiju stuff like Godzilla, that’s pretty damn fun. Though I think most of the later offerings don’t classify to much as Horror.
I have no idea where you got your information from, but the general consensus among the Horror community is that Hellraiser 1 & 2 are the best in the series, with the second edging out the first. From there on Clive Barker’s Input lessened and the effects (And namely the budget) melted away. I liked three from a general standard because the statue was pretty cool and the Cenobites were lulzly, people can enjoy shitty films, it’s why Troll 2 has an entire fandom devoted to it.
Inferno was ok, but played out like an incredibly long episode for an Anthology show. It suffers the same problem most Hellraiser DVD films did. “Take another film or story that’s been done to death, but insert Pinhead.”
Hellseeker has the same problem, except they brought Kristy back because obviously the actress needed money. Could have been any other Horror film but they simply inserted Pinhead and viola, you have a film.
You are better off reading the Boom! comic book that Clive Barker had a hand in creating for a time then watching any Hellraiser past the first two.
Suspiria – The beginning is really creepy–nice use of lighting, music, etc. The rest of the movie isn’t as good though.
Martyrs – Made me upset, plus acts of self-mutilation make me cringe.
Up on my list of horror movies to watch: Inside, Tokyo Gore Police, Tenebre.
Never mind that Rob Zombie has just a fraction (if at all) of John Carpenter’s understanding of how suspense works. It ain’t the bang, but the waiting for it.
Susipiria is the most widely popular of the Three Mothers Trilogy of Dario Argento, and probably his most lavish and it’s pretty enjoyable. But I always preferred Inferno. Film had a nice score, some more supernatural elements and (A rare case in Horror) a male lead.
Mother of Tears was a letdown though, also he needs to stop filming his daughter naked, it’s creepy.
Yeah Matyrs is one of those bleak films. I can’t watch more than one of those in a sitting, just depressing.
Think my favorite stuff both for film, books, and comics is always Anthology stuff. Films, shows, and stories that deal with short subjects that are never fully explained and you basically just get a peak at it.
If you guys can find it (Considering it’s rarity these days legally it’s difficult to find cheap) Nightmares a 1983 Anthology Horror film I used to rent on VHS a lot as a kid is a fun watch. It only had one OOP DVD release that was kind of bare bones, and I never see it cheap for a well handled copy.
One segment has Emilio Estevez obsessed with a video games…then the game comes to life and tries to kill him. Another has Lance Henriksen as a Preacher who lost his faith, being tormented by a supernatural pick-up on a desert road. Sounds cheesy sure, but as a kid I always remembered it and enjoyed the film, most of my favorites are stuff I saw as a kid and had an effect on me.
You always got a weak stomach for shaky cam though lol, I really enjoyed the individual elements and gore. But like I said, fuck the people they got for that film, hardly anyone is remotely likable.
How long was the Giallo? A lot that I watch, as much as I love the genre, seem to drag the fuck on for no other reason than to pad time.
I haven’t seen it. If you and AYO recommend it, I’ll check it out.
Edit: aside from the Dark Tower series, The Mist is my favorite Stephen King work. I really liked the movie. If the credits rolled when the story ended, non-fans would have bitched anyway. Fans are the more annoying lot. SK giving it a thumb-up speaks volumes.
Has anyone gotten to play a translated version of White Day? It’s a Korean horror game on ps2 and it was before Amnesia and the concept is the same. It takes place in a school and you can’t kill the crazy janitor or any of the ghosts. The interesting thing I heard is that there are difficulty levels and the higher the difficulty level, more random events can occur and it gets even creepier (on easiest it would seem a lot more dead). The graphics do look very much outdated now though. I’m interested in trying it out but I wouldn’t want to dig around on too many sites to find a translated game iso.
Make sure it’s REC and REC 2 though, and not the American bastardizations Quarantine 1 & 2. Both of the first films are the same outside of one key difference, and then it diverges. REC 2 into a badass sequel, Quarantine 2 into complete shit.
Sounds cool SixMachine, I’ll have to look that up. I recently watched playthroughs of Michigan for PS2 and Deep Fear. Eventually I want to pick up a Saturn and Dreamcast to play all the Horror titles released for those consoles.
The scp foundation stuff also has some nice reads. Some of them are pretty unnerving and others are a joke, but some of the more popular ones like the living statue get some love. If you want a game that does the whole being chased mechanic well with some interesting twists you can try scp containment breach (it’s free).
Ah man, the OG Twilight Zone episodes. I used to love watching the marathons on the Sci Fi channel way back when.
Only one I can say that actually scared me was the apocalypse one where all the dude wants to do is read. Also Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction, that show was the shit, made of legends.
As for movies, the movie that scared me the most was Stay Alive. It wasn’t even the whole movie, just the first 5 minutes of it. I was in the theater with my brother and sister. Can’t remember how old I was but I do remember fighting the urge to haul ass out of the building.
I heard of the rec titles, but never seen them. It’s after I watched a video review of Quarantine did I hear of them. Weren’t the movies in Spanish?
As a general rule, I hate movies with the POV camera view, especially horror movies. Quarantine was a egregious case because the camera guy couldn’t keep the camera straight, and was randomly zooming in and out, all the things you’re not supposed to do if you’re trying to film something. really bad shaky camera stuff.
I also remember watching Nightmare on Elm Street [the remake, produced by Michael Bay’s company] in the theater. I was stoned at the time when I saw it, so I [and a bunch of other people in the audience were] laughing at how stupid the movie was. Has that ever happened to you before, especially while under the influence such as being drunk or high.
What are your thoughts on the Cube series. I read info of the series online, and it seems pretty fucked up
Yes, nothing wrong with Foreign films if your reading is on a 5th grade or up level. Not hard to keep pace really.
NOES Remake is universally reviled, no one likes that. Soulless piece of crap film.
Cube is ok, It’s an interesting concept. But it was dumbed down by multiple sequels that followed a standard. First and second aren’t bad to check out if the idea interests you.
My Soul To Take is one of those movies I am still wondering about what the people involved were smoking when they made that movie. I mean the direction they went in for that movie just boggles the mind of how nonsensical and bad it is. The twists [if I remember that movie having any] were the twists that I hate in any kind of movies [ones that are not interesting and the least exciting route to take]
I remember one of the Cube movies being hilarious. Was the one with the retarded guy. The part where the black guy was sneaking through the room where if you made noise then you’d get sliced up. The retarded man yells from the other side “Good luck!” and the black dude gets fucked up lol.
I’ve only seen parts of Jacob’s Ladder. I really need to pick up the slack and watch the whole thing.
I don’t mind Dario Argento filming his daughter naked ;).
Mother of Tears turned into Mystery Science Theater: College Edition when I watched it a while back with some friends. Especially that part at the end when they travel through the poop and start laughing like “hahaha I can’t believe you sat through this movie!”
I also found the Emilio Estevez segment you were talking about, I’m checking it out now since I was just watching the Mighty Ducks today so I’ll see him in another role:
The Bishop of Battle

I’m going to have to rib you if you’re serious (ok I’ll let it slide if you were young). It’s one of those slasher films where I’m hoping the bad guy kills all the characters, just didn’t like it.
I do enjoy watching it since it was filmed in New Orleans, so I recognize some places. The film also makes a reference to Mr. Binkies, a porn shop in New Orleans.
Somehow I never thought to look on Youtube for the individual segments, thank you very much.
I’ve been watching Horror since I was four lol. Grandma, Uncle and Dad are to blame. So I have no mercy for people scared of crap films. Then again the theme for Stay Alive if it’s the right movie I am thinking of was kind of creepy, some weird synth beat.
I remember reading on some website that the Rainman that you’re talking about was actually one of the people who designed the Cube. At the end of Cube Zero where he gets out, there’s some kinda bullshit where he gets lobotomized and he gets thrown back into the cube. So in the first movie, he knows how fucked up the Cube is, and he’s the only one who survives
