The history of Bison, Vega, and Balrog

Almost. It’s “Darushimu”.

And since the ‘u’ is almost silent it’s probably pronounced “Dar-Shim”…

no its fking not.

You, sir, just added nothing to the discussion.

Nash is a real surname, dude. Go wiki it, there’s a pretty substantial list of famous Nashs.

No idea why the changed the name, but Charlie Nash was pretty accepted by all but nutjobs to be his full name, but it’s now official since it appears on his dogtags in Guile’s SF4 intro.

Nash wasn’t the only name that was changed in Guile’s SF2 ending. His wife Julia got changed to Jane for some reason, but it later got changed back to Julia in other games and the Udon comics. His daughter was originally called Kris in Japan, but got changed to Amy in the west, which it stuck as.

hm, and why did they change the name of gouki to akuma?

Translation mistake. ?? is pronounced Gouki in Japanese. The American translators literally translated those kanji and then named him the Japanese word for demon: Akuma.

He added his opinion. That’s like… everything in a discussion.
Although his way to put it was kinda awkward.

The name “Charlie Nash” was introduced by Udon.

More like translation makeover (Sheng Long anybody?). You’re not able to go from Gouki to Akuma with those kanji alone.

Moreover, Charlie as used in overseas versions is the pet name for Carlos. If CUSA now says his name is Charlie Nash, his dog tags must say Carlos Nash to be legit (no pet names allowed on dog tags). Officially CJ remains with referring to him as simply Nash, as does Guile.

+1 Definitely seems like a choice they made rather than a mistake. IMO, Akuma sounds meaner/cooler than Gouki.

Definitely it was a choice. EGM once described it best:

“Now called Akuma in hushed tones, Gouki wanders the globe, searching for worthy opponents to vanquish in fights to the death.”

Hushed tones because calling someone Akuma in Japan is equivalent to calling someone Satan. It was never meant to be his name, just a whispering tag-on, but CUSA went along with it and even changed his blood color to green for 2I. Anyway, since the thread should be highlighting the Shadaloo three:

CJ’s always stated that Mike from SF1 and Boxer are two different characters, though CUSA didn’t understand that when World Warrior was under development. So when Boxer’s early prototype name was revealed to be Tyson, CUSA put apples and oranges together and looked at potential lawsuit issues. Boxer’s name eventually was finalized as M. Bison, but apparently that wasn’t a sufficient deviation and the triple name switch occurred for overseas editions.
Vega as the name for Dictator was chosen for its Arabic origins rather than any Spanish reference. It means fallen eagle/vulture which ties into Shadaloo’s insignia as well. Just be glad they didn’t stick to his prototype name Eagle Head (SF2 Victory anyone?). M. Bison as Dictator’s name reads as Mister Bison, not master, major, or anything else. Claw’s prototype name was simply Spain Ninja (inventive I know).

gouki = strong, merciless demon/ogre

akuma = demon, devil, satan, fiend

i think gouki fits better.

edit: yeah i guess akuma can be more like a nickname, he’s literally satan lol… but the name is gouki.

edit2: and i recalled calling M.Bison(dictator), Mister Bison when I was a kid, though im more used to the japanese names…

from the wiki page:

Charlie is one of 4 previously playable characters with a non-playable appearance in Street Fighter IV. The others are Adon, Yun, and Yang. After Capcom stated that they would consider releasing new characters via DLC, these 4 are suspected to be among the first wave of new playable characters.

any truth to this???

I’ve read numerous reports that Capcom has said they do NOT intend to add ANY dlc characters.

I find it very unlikely that Capcom is going to release anything that extensive in a DLC. If they are going to add new playable characters it will come in the form of a new version of the game.

i guess we can all wait for Alpha 4

Correct bro, right before the Claw fight

really? Anything can be a name… :looney:

My name is Clito. I am now the fierce Russian guy with the chinky eyes.

Seth Killian mentioned something about the origins of Akuma’s name during the EVO Finals. I think he said something along the lines of, there was some story in the Japanese newspaper about someone named Akuma, and the US CAPCOM guys thought it was a cool sounding name, so they took it.

I couldn’t tell if he was being facetious, though.

It was that a japanese couple were trying to get their child named Akuma and the government said no to them, so someone at capcom saw it and was like, that name is badass, so they took it. Also mentioned how Gouki ain’t really that intimidating sounding in english.
