The HEROES thread

And what a fantastic “fight” scene that turned out to be.

Who else hates that new kid who’s stalking Claire? Get a haircut, asshole!

he didn’t mention a name in japanese. I can make out japanese ok, and he definitely didnt’ leak a name. The subs are accurate.

he’s just a douche in general. How does Claire Bear always manage to attract and be attracted to the douchebags?

Regarding Nathan/Peter Mirror thing…

When I first saw that I immediately thought that it was exactly what it looked like. That Peter was really in the mirror because Niki/Jessica was around Peter when all of this went down and thus he had to have gained her power now too (as we saw with the super strength). I figured since Niki and Jessica were sisters and Peter and Nathan were brothers (even though not twins) it wasn’t too far a stretch to think that the massive explosion that was Peter somehow caused Peter to only exist in the same manner that Niki and Jessica do.

Of course the end of the ep dashed my hopes on that one when we found out where Peter actually was. But at the time I thought it a good theory.

finally watched the season premiere last night and was not impressed

Claire storyline feels dumb. Horned-rim glasses really needs to die. His character is just holding up her development at this point. Possibly her mom should die too, although going crazy might be a better option.

Hiro’s storyline is dumb.

Everything with the “adults” (hiro’s dad, petrelli’s mom, etc) is weak.

Parkman and the girl storyline is interesting and shows promise, although the girl is a little too adult and annoying right now.

Peter with amnesia could either be really bad or kinda good.

Apparently, Sulu had the power to die by falling from a great height.

I liked Nathan better when his name was two face.

The group that takes out threats knew about Sylar and did Jack Shit. You’re about to get fucked up again, Mohinderance. That should have been the first question he asked.

Sylar is back because Hiro fucked up time, so the hero never became the hero, so he never inspired Hiro to be a hero, so Hiro never killed Sylar. yeah. That’s it.

Sylar is going to end up being the greatest hero of them all, by the end of the series. That, or he’s going to chill on the beach for the rest of his days. Either way, he wins.

 a tongue twister and a paradox all in one…didnt think it was possible.

If he wins, the show loses.

he had sixth power ranger written all over him and i called that shit last season.

Right, because it’s easier to relate to being a god who disrespects life than it is to relate to someone who had a bad childhood and is acting out in extreme ways because of it. Brilliant.

Sylar is still, in my opinion, the best written character on this show.

LOL. Mohinderance. Too good.

You’d be surprised how fucked up a mom can make a kid…

Sylar is definitely a much more complex character than 90% of the cast. I’m really anxious to see where he goes. I mean think about the other generalizations you can make about everyone else.

(note: these are broad generalizations about characters in similar taste to what was made above)
Hiro - an adult 12 year old who suddenly learned how to control time and space
Peter - delusional adult with dreams of grandeur.
Nathan - Corrupt politician with a heart
Nikki - Trailer trash with a webcam and an alternate ego

if you look at just stuff like the above all the characters look really dull and lame, but they all have something else that makes them more than their generic description.

while sylar may have been a momma’s boy with issues, he also became quite psychotic which lead him to kill a shit ton of people. I don’t feel Sylar will become good though… it doesn’t seem to be anywhere close to his final agenda. Sylar just wants power pure and simple.

Not really. Sylar, and MAYBE Glasses Dude, is the only one with complexity and character growth. It’s kind of ironic because Hiro’s entire story arc had to deal with him growing as a character, but there wasn’t any of that to be found. In fact, it was in Hiro’s thread that we got to see Sylar’s character mature.

Whenever there’s opportunity to expand on any other character, the show just ends up introducing a new one, who adds nothing to the plot. And they’re still doing this. It’s also awesome how other characters, like DL and Zach and the Satellite Chick, just seem to disappear from the series.

I think all the characters are fine, aside form Nikki/Claire/Mohinder. They didn’t seem to really have a point. Its great that Nikki has psychological issues, but all women are crazy anyway so w/e.

Claire’s only purpose in season 1 was for her not to get her brain eaten. After that, she was mostly a vehicle for Bennet and the company.

Mohinder shouldn’t be a main character. No one cares about the issues he has with his dead father, or the sister that died before he was born. The list is unimportant, since there isn’t a good reason for it to exist yet. It just puts people in jeopardy at the hands of the company/people that eat brains.

Edit:
DL is gone because of something with the actor, I think.
Hana was just supposed to be a tie-in for all the background websites and shit.
And Zach is gone because he was gay.

thats why they brought in the Hondurians(?? people from Honduras??) :stuck_out_tongue:

Someone explain to me why Sylar has character depth.

I don’t know about everyone else, but Sylar seemed rather one-dimensional to me. He’s just your basic selfish, homicidal, self-aggrandizing bad guy. . .he has no deeper motive than to just get as many powers as possible.

The episode where he displayed a conscience with his mom might prove that he has some depth, except his behavior was completely out of character from the past 10-15 prior episodes where he showed no qualms about killing supers and eating their brains.

If you want an example of a serial killer with depth, I’d say Dexter fits the bill. Sylar. . .he’s just kind of boring.

Yes, I know DL is gone because the actor opted out, but he didn’t even need to be there in the first place. He was one of those useless characters whose absence could have benefited the show.

And the actor who played Zach landed a better gig, so he’s out.

But would about all the other characters? Why not develop some of the ones we have instead of just throwing new, boring ones into the mix while we still don’t know shit about the others. Linderman and Sulu had a lot of potential, but they just threw it all away. Sylar is pretty much all we have left.

The most interesting thing I found about the season premiere, other than Sylar on the beach, is the “new” bad guy because it seemed to me that the very first bad guy who Parkman shot back in s1e02 might have been him instead of Sylar. It’s hard to say, since they reused the same costume. It’s like every bad guy has to wear a cheap, gray sports jacket and an unmarked baseball cap when making his first appearance.

EDIT: And Sylar has depth because of his out-of-character performance that humanizes him and shows that he really isn’t simply a one-dimensional killer. Yes, I know, that’s really not much depth, but it’s more than any other character on this show has.

Sylar

Spoiler

Apparently, the conclusion at the end of season 1 was about Sylar. The way I read his goal in that showdown was to stop Peter from exploding. Sylar knew he wasn’t the bomb-- and interviews with people on the show seems to confirm that

All characters have depth in their own way, most of the posters here are willfully ignoring the growth or intricacies of characters they don’t like or don’t want to understand while finding deeper meaning with characters they personally identify with. I understand that is normal and simply human nature, but Heroes, like any other show, has character archetypes.

Creating a popular show with wholly original “normal” characters for a general audience is nearly impossible (esp. since SRK is a den for amateur critics as well), but appreciating the characters and how they interact in the story is what makes a show interesting.

Now, my hatred of Sylar isn’t because I think he’s a deep or shallow character but because he represents a disturbed individual with a god complex, an antisocial deranged lunatic who has an frightening amount of power and no inhibition around those he wants to kill.

To make him suddenly “turn” into a good guy would be a complete misdirection. A sociopath can’t become a hero (anti-hero under select situations maybe) but he doesn’t exemplify the theme the show represents.
