I have a theory that Touhou is Hello Kitty for boys. Basically they are characters whose mythos and culture is much larger and extensive than anything ever produced officially. The real difference I see is Hello Kitty is kind of a generic stand in for all good obediant girls while Touhou is basically a smorgasbord of individualized fetishes.
