The Hajime no Ippo (HnI) thread - Gazelle Punch Her in the Gut!

Is Ippo even ranked in the world division? As far as I know, his only accolade is the Japan National Championship. You’d think by now (which has been 20+ years), Ippo would be fighting world class level fighters…

Christ, 20 years and Ippo is still stuck in Japan. Geez.

The old anime is what keeps me going. Love the funny scenes.

it’s been a while since ippo’s ranking has been mentioned but he is supposed in the top ten now. probably 8th or 9th in the wbc.

Him and Sendo are apparently both in the top 10 if I remember correctly.

you mean ippo and miyata. (as the opbf champion 6th or 7th now) sendo’s rank which has been last mentioned was 23th.

Well in the 1990’s Ricardo Lopez (Who Ricardo Martinez is base off of) beat a Japanese boxer by knockout.

Since HnI is base in the 1990’s I guess it up to Morikawa if he want to re-act the fight, or reverse the fight to boost Japanese pride.

Personally I think he will make Ippo win. Maybe Ippo just throw a accidental headbutt, get Martinez dizzy then knock him the fuck out. < Okay that sounds a little off the edge, but oh well I’m using my imagination!

haha “the righteous lost” poor ippo.

those 2 clips > last 2 ippo fights.

I would think that already happened. His name was Jesus. From what I hear Ippo is at least 12th and probably at most 8th in the world.

Wow, can’t believe I JUST found this thread lol…

Been a long time fan of Ippo and…well…this fight is mixed for me at the moment. While I do like the idea of a future mega champion fighting Ippo as a rookie, the physics defying bullshit that’s going on lately has me kind of ticked. I always thought what made HnI so great was that while to a certain extent the moves and abilities are over exaggerated, there was always a basis of truth in them.

This fight, however, is just flat out ridiculous. If this keeps up it’s going to enter into Eyeshield 21 levels of blatant anime over exaggeration and a real shit storm will start with the readers lol.

The chapters aren’t TOO bad once they are translated(well besides Ippo’s minor “IDONTKNOWIDONTKNOW!” breakdown). For this fight to be remembered as a “good fight”, Ippo is going to have to absolutely crush this kid with his experience sometime sooner rather than later.

Hell, fights still better than the Gedo fight atleast.

wtf

at least gedo somewhat boxed his own style and didn’t pull shit out of his ass, like flickers, smash, defying laws of physics.

fuck thsi fuck fuck it to hell fuck ippo

Meh, I don’t know. Even after rereading the Gedo fight as a whole after it was finished, I never really liked it. Sure the defying laws of physics in the Woli fight is really annoying, but as a whole I couldn’t get behind Gedo being a serious threat to Ippo.

Coming from an attempt to ground the series in reality(quite lulzworthy, I know), Gedo just wasn’t as fearsome of an opponent as he should have been. I guess I contribute it to the lack of build up and the fact that his whole magician persona revolved almost entirely around his glove trick and just how dumbfounded EVERYONE was by it. Sure I get that loosening the glove to give it a bit of a length boost can throw a boxer off, but it’s not enough to build an entire character around. I just found it unbelievable how Ippo suddenly panicked(more so than usual) and thought he was fighting Dhalsim or something. So yeah, while it wasn’t my favorite fight it DID have two redeeming qualities:

  1. It was awesome to hear Gedo brag about how getting punched didn’t scare him because he was shot and almost killed in his past, only to freak the fuck out and think his face was punched off after Ippo caught him with a clean shot to the face
  2. It hyped up Randy Boy Jr.

As for Woli, sure he’s using flickers and smashes and punches from other characters, but they aren’t really working that well on Ippo. It’s a combination of the fact that Woli cannot throw Mashiba-like flickers or Sendo-like smashes(he might naturally know how to throw these punches, but not nearly as well as the others) and the fact that Ippo has neutralized these weapons before. The idea of a prodigy boxer being able to be a serious threat even without any technique due to his unpredictability and raw athleticism isn’t TOO far of a stretch in boxing. (I guess Prince Naseem Hamed is a good example of this, the boxer that Bryan Hawk was primarily based off of)

You don’t realize that Woli has his own style to using the moves, the flickers and his movement are just to be annoying. He used a Sendo smash (because that arc doesn’t really make it a smash anymore since it’s technically just a vertical straight punch, this is a proper uppercut) that went under and between peekaboo. It’s more similar to a one-shot version of Sanada’s sideways uppercut. I don’t know, Woli is just throwing a bunch of bullshit moves that are hitting because Morikawa deemed them hittable regardless of the situation for fake fight drama build-up bullshit.

875 is out.

Ippo sucks.

If I was in the audience, I’d be booing Ippo.

ippo is getting jobbed so hard. this isn’t even fun to read right now. this guy is doing the matrix-level shit. to the point where it is excessive. what the hell is the point in dodging a punch just to be back to back with another guy? i hate woli, but ippo doesn’t deserve to be champion.

875 for the lazy

After reading that, they blatant point out Ippo’s probably going to end up corner hugging soon to beat Woli.

I figure its a setup for Ippo to throw a counter. the only way he’s gonna catch Woli is hitting him after Woli has already committed himself.

Whatever. Dissapointed. Again.

That’s a problematic setup. Ippo isn’t a counter puncher and it’s a horrible way to set that up since Morikawa has proven that Woli doesn’t have anything to commit to. He has superior tools around which make no sense at all on the character. Like the way he fights makes no sense. He dodged jumping into the corner when he has no weakness in the corner at all. Also with 3 matches under his belt, how can you say he has the experience to understand how troubling the corner is? This dude does ninja flips over straights and doesn’t get tired.

Whatever, I think I’m over Ippo. I’ll check back in in a couple months when the entire fight is over and just go through it all at once instead of this shit.

Sadly I’m beginning to feel this way too. This fight is getting fucking retarded.

When Woli gets smacked in his smug little face, it’ll be glorious.

/sigh this fight is gay…

Hate this fight more than the one with Gedo.
