It’s not that we dislike Ippo, it’s that we want some semblance of order restored to this storyline. Ippo has no real business beating a boxer of this caliber. We’d rather see him lose and grow from it to be a legit challenger, not just one with magical plot armor.
All the Japanese love Ippo’s being showered with, coupled with Makunouchi’s never-say-die fighting style is gonna lead to him losing his shit and getting Dempsey Trolled into the third loss of his career.
When Ricardo went in on Date, he was still in full control of his anger. I’m betting Alfredo isn’t going to be as self-aware, so when he snaps, he’ll get sloppy… and we all know what happens when you get sloppy in this manga.
The thing is, they’re at least trying to explain stuff with this fight. It’s been established up to, and during this first round, that Ippo is tough, fast, and has experience dealing with a bunch of different styles of left-hands. He took a couple of good shots from Alf and has kept on coming. They’ve had a good exchange (that you all really liked), so if nothing else they laid down the groundwork to say that Ippo CAN win; the question of whether or not he WILL remains to be seen. Winning or losing, he still grows as a fighter.
Ippo isnt in trouble yet, he hasnt broken a sweat. After he tests the waters and lands his first hit, Freddy will craze out and use his right, Ippo will suck it up and then anal rape the sob all over Tokyo. Yes am taking bets.
The crowd pisses alfredo off to the point where his anger makes him do something retarded as fuck
2.Ippo does some new move bullshit that catches alfredo off guard and plots his way to victory
Sawamura arc is one of the best in the series. We get to see angry Ippo, the first evolution of the Dempsey Roll, and it all ends with the Mashiba vs Sawamura bout. I hope they get to that one before the series ends.
It’s always been dumb how badly Ippo struggles because of plot points. He should be like Takamura, owning up most people and running into a few epic fights here and there with the absolute best of the best. Instead, Ippo struggles against everybody. We’re supposed to believe every opponent he fights is the best in the world and super special and that’s why he struggles, but it’s dumb because they just become jobbers afterwards and everybody acts like that doesn’t make Ippo look like a total scrub himself. That’s the logical inconsistency with it.
Ippo is a tank with an iron chin able to take the most damage in his weight class, has the best recovery, has the best stamina, has the best power, has the best step in speed and his fundamentals are also supposed to be the best. All of his punches are supposed to be technically sound because of his coaching.
So why does he suck? That’s the reach every match.
It would be believable if he just tore through everyone and struggled in the rare few matches. Sendo made sense, Volg made sense, Date makes sense, they were all kept strong afterwards and also it’s because Ippo was still learning himself. Everyone else pretty much should be getting wtfpwned. I mean Gedo, Woli? What were those? Those were absurd. Ippo is a veteran now, and has been for awhile, not a wet behind the ears rookie.
And now here at the world level, does he not watch any tape? If he is getting surprised by stuff at the world level from established boxers it’s absolutely ridiculous. People don’t randomly invent new shit in matches, it’s a pretty well established sport and there are only so many things you can do.
Ippo is the most boring character in the entire manga. He can’t lose this match, because it can’t advance him as a fighter at all. He needs to win and fight a good match. But for the next 1.5 years probably we’ll get his usual slog through match. I hope I am wrong and we get something compelling.
No I don’t think Ippo should be like Takamura at all. It’s good to see two different levels of champions, one that’s completely dominant like Takamura, and one that could lose at any moment like Ippo. That’s not what the issue is. The issue is that in the past, he’s found REALLY bullshit ways to keep that title, when he’s probably a boxer that should have given up another loss by now.
