Unless its Guy’s bad matchups or Mirror matches I generally do fine, The most I do is not rushdown and drop links, but I play Alpha 3 to much so I don’t lose my touch with AE Guy.
^ Go to training mode and practice your bread and butter combos before going online, it will take you far.
I know this is off topic but how do you get his bushin chain combo down i find it much difficult in sfa3 then in sf4 lol
It requires a specific timing. Wait are you on GGPO?
yeah i play on there, but usually Brazilians run that room so I can never get a good match.
whats your name on there I’ve probably faced you
oh dude you’re from CT lol we def have probably fought before.
reemz and i remade an account called sf3goodgame I can hop on anytime if you dont mind helping me learn alittle lol
Alright trying to learn guy so I thought this would be the best place to ask about him lol. I was wondering if anyone had tips on how to effectively use him. Ive done his trials but those were easy. What are his most outstanding normals? Best ways to deal with fireballs? Does he have a Kara grab?
Basically you’ll be making use of all of his normals to be honest, his best normals for footsies though, are st mk, st mp, st hp, st hk, cr mp and cr mk/hk.
Anti Airs: Cr. mp/mk are mostly used, St HK can be used in some cases, EX tatsu is just for moves that would normally beat cr mp/mk, as well as TK Izuna. (EX for safety)
Mp Hozanto and EX Run/slide are best from mid screen for fireballs, you can use EX overhead but Slide is overall better unless you score a CH to extend a combo.
Note: all Hozantos except EX are projectile invincible. MK Tatsu is also Projectile invincibility.
Though if you are quite a bit of distance and don’t feel the risk of using HP hoz. You can jump and elbow to avoid the fireball as well as being AA’d
Guy does have a kara grab, its st mp ~ grab, but Guy’s grab range isn’t great (until 2012 where its better)
The main thing about Guy is you’ll have to learn how to patient, reason being is because Guy takes works. Not so much in the execution area but to be effective you must be patient. Most of Guy’s metagame will revolve around, Run/Slide or getting a hard KD. Pros: He is capable of rushing down, and has a great corner game. On top of that he has some good mixups and some nice cross up setups to open up your opponents and can punish and dish out damage hard, with/without meter, a few frame traps that are useful. Cons: Main reversal is EX tatsu, its a huge risk can’t FADC and if block or baited punishment will be given, Lack of safe blockstrings, his only one is TC xx LP hoz regularly its -1 if you FADC you’ll be at +1, at best Runstop will give you -2 from TC, in Super he had close mp which would give you 0 on perfect timing. Ultras are a bit hard to use, U1 only has its uses in the corner from a Hozanto FADC, Bushin Chain, Ninja Sickle or you miraculously land a Run/ Overhead as an Anti Air. But in most cases it gets scales badly. You’ll do 400+ in most cases but its not so much a reward when Super does more damage in every situation. Though with Guys regular damage output it’s nothing to completely fret about. U2 has its uses mostly for punishment but I advise working on the execution of it, it doesn’t have its shortcut anymore and fast inputs tend to mess it up
Guy does have a flaw though, a lot of low profile moves can make life rough for you, reason being because it will beat out your air normals except HK if timed correctly (will change in 2012 from teh looks of it with air mp and hk), and it completely destroys Guy’s mixup game when it comes to Bushin Flip and run overhead, not many know about it though and sometimes people won’t go for it because it does require some timing,
Watch some players play Guy and learn from there, (Kiyomatsu, Otaku (OTK), Kiryu Tsukimiya, Papa, etc) we have vids in its respective threads.
And watch some tutorials.
Just keep practicing and learning everything. Guy gets easier once you get his fundamentals down.
Oh learn your matchups, its a make or break for Guy.
Thanks man. Great overview. I’ve been watching vids and stuff of kiryu mostly. So far I’m just having trouble opening up my opponents. His jump is by far the weirdest part about him it’s like amazing yet not at the same time. I’ll still be in the lab with him but so far I’m liking him. And of course matchups will come naturally. So far the Guy community seems pretty cool.
Try to base yourself to not jump so often, most time’s you’ll want to stay grounded and only jump after KDs or to close distance with Command Elbow. You also have Run/Stop which is generally safer because EX will give armor and you’ll never want to blatantly Run at the opponent with our meter in hopes to catch them with a slide. Opening your opponent up takes a bit of time because Guy’s pokes don’t have tremendous range as some other characters and Cr hk really is not that great because if you mistime the distance you’ll even overshoot or undershoot it and be unsafe in both situation its good every so often but be careful, people will look for it a lot. You’ll have to focus on footsies and closing the distance canceling into Lp hozanto or Run stop, taking risks but you have to make it worth it. After that you have work on mixing in Bushin Flip elbow and Run overhead every now and then and throws/frametraps.
Hey There All The Guys Am A Seth User,I Just Asked About Seth Options Against Guy In Seth Forum And Now I Need To Know How Guy Players Tend To Think Against Seth,Can Anyone Help Me Here,Because Every Other Player I Play Tends To Think Seth Is Cheap,so every other player now is playing guy against me and i dont know anything about guy moves and strategies.Any Idea how to punish guy’s bunshin throw on wakeup?
Hit a normal move on wake up like cr.lk or something, or possibly even activate ultra 1/2. Just get a knockdown and start your mix ups, what’s guy gonna do, ex tatsu? That’s about it. Oh yeah, and abuse the dive kick along with the focus.
Seth’s tall and I think he gets a guranteed crumple when absorbing Guy’s elbows. IT’s stupid.
Seths Focus is (for me anyway) a nightmare tool in this matchup, he moves so far. So if you find the space just outside Guys footsie range use it as another tool. You want to be just outside his overhead and crouching Mk, and if Im remembering right Seth can actually still land focus from outside Lp Hozanto range? its bullshit in want of a better word.
But watch out if Guy has meter as ex Hozanto will catch you quicker than you can react to. At the right spacing if guy jumps either you can focus absorb his elbow and hit him OR because Guys jump is so floaty and far reaching that if he passes above you: focus anyway and block… you move so far forward on whiff that Guy has run slide as his his best option an If hes not on point he will not react in time to punish your focus whiff. Thats all I can think of along with that move Seth has thats similar to Ryus jumping mp. It beats almost everything air to air that Guy has.
These are things I struggle with though so take with tablespoons of salt.
I’m generally a grounded person don’t worry I’m just still just getting around all these weird things about him. So far I’m liking him. I just do ranked on PSN on a new account facing as many new/bad players as possible cuz I know my Guy is there as well. I still don’t know how to incorporate bushin flip. I know you can use it as a well timed meaty kinda like Cammy’s hooligan. As a Juri main I’m kinda used to using her low hitting moves for footsies and his tbh kinda suck for footsies. I’m learning now that his run/overhead isn’t all as safe as it seems at least when people are looking for it. I see his games revolves around getting people to the corner. His game really shines there just like Juri. He might be more suitable of an alt than Ibuki. I know I should probably be facing better people to up my game but I still have tons to learn about him. He has a lot flaws to his pressure it’s all risky but soo good at the same time. I don’t think I can discover any game breaking tech with him. But slowly and surely I’ll become at least decent.
This is why I love playing as Guy. I find the characters who have overly safe pressure or one godly bnb to be beyond boring. I’d rather have to use all Guys tools unsafely trying to panic or outthink my opponent than use 2 normals and one blockstring over and over hoping for a mistake.
Im looking at you Bison, and I suppose Balrog… zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Your right about Seth’s Focus Attack, it does a good job against Elbow Drop. The cheapest thing about Seth (probably the only thing) is his Command Grab, other than that the match is close to being even, in Seth’s favor. I just fought a good Seth player yesterday and the main thing you want to do against him is keep him out of the air at all cost. He’s not that dangerous on the ground IMO. When Seth is full screen, look for his wall jump. Use air to air’s like Guys Hp, Elbow Drop and Izuna Drop. I will trade with Guy’s jumping Hp against Seth’s Dive Kick in a heart beat just to keep him out of the air. ‘No mix-up means no guessing’… Like wise I want jump-in against Seth not much because his SRK is really good. Every Seth I play loves to jump, so this match becomes an air to air match 90% of the time for me.
I tend to just EX Izuna his SRKs, Great way to condition him not to use it.
Yeah that is what I try to do when I have a bit of play time. I have very little play time so its taking me forever to get better.
could anyone share tips for facing guile?
